...The existing M8 firmware is very well established and stable after all. There are no more new production cameras, or new issues with the mature M8...

The "shutter fault" is hardly acceptable IMHO and has been acknowledged by Leica:

There is a bug on the firmware which causes the alert "shutter fault". This problem should be gone with the next firmware which is hopefully coming out soon.

I remember someone saying that a digital rangefinder was technically not possible. After the Epson RD1 was on the market someone said a FF rangefinder was technically not possible. And then there was someone who said that the discreet mode of the M8.2 could not be implemented in the M8 via firmware because of the different shutter. Someone mentioned that the S2 was developed mainly so its technology could be used on the R10. Who was it that said in March 2009, when M8.2 sales were low, that there would be no FF M9 in the near future? And who said that there is no room for the M9 lens selection menu in the M8? Now, I really do believe everything Leica says in public, but it's such a pity I can't remember names at all...

Btw, Mark, your work is truly stunning.

I can't imagine Leica devoting even one more single man-hour towards the M8.

The product cycle is done and the product discontinued.

As much as I'd like some tweaking, as a new M8 owner, I bought in assuming

that there would be no further improvements.

As far as believing Leica or their corporate statements, I'd put about as much faith in theirs

as I would Canon's or Nikon's.

They'll say what they have to say when they need and do what they need when they need to.

I agree. Fine enough that we got the auto iso feature just as an example.

No one added any feature to my Nikon D100 for the last seven years or so. So I think they did (and will do) a great job at Leica with the last firmware update.

Both my RD-1 and my Kodak slr/c got a major firmware upgrade after they have been out of cycle.

But nikon never promised continued support for the D100, and doesn't really carry the "legendary" support that is often associated with Leica :)

Doesn't carry the Leica price tag either :p

But really though, more updates and features are a good thing last time I checked. I don't see why anyone wouldn't welcome them.

I haven't been a frequent visitor to the Forum - in fact my M8 is on firmware 1.201 which, I assume, is rather out of date! However, apart from a focussing issue (which is not a software/firmware fault) my camera operates perfectly. I don't wish to update anything just in case I introduce a bug I don't want.

However, having forked out such a large chunk of change on the M8, I would be very disappointed if Leica no longer supported it - I realise this is not being said directly here, but it's implied.

I didn't even realise the M8 had been discontinued until I logged in yesterday. It still feels like a new camera to me!!

neila,

You really should update your firmware to the latest version 2.004 The new version is the most stable, has less bugs, supports SDHC cards, better WB, Discreet mode and Auto ISO among others.

Patrick writing, testing and implementing firmware is not simple, inexpensive or a small thing at all. In fact Stefan Daniel has already said that it was only possible with the M9 because the firmware was all new and expense is the reason that the extra feature you want was not retrofitted to the M8. He has told us that Leica does intend to continue firmware development for the M8 so perhaps some features will be added in the future. That does not guarantee that every wished for feature is possible or practical.

Realistically you would have to expect that an update for the M9 would be a higher priority for Leica. The existing M8 firmware is very well established and stable after all. There are no more new production cameras, or new issues with the mature M8. Anything that gets added to its existing features is more likely to flow from the M9 developments, not a standalone project, in my opinion.

Actually Stefan said that there would be M8 firmware available shortly..that was in October / November. timframe He also indicated that M9 extra features maybe available to M8 users at a price. Since then I believe that there has been no further information from Solms.....

are you new to Leica? I don't think you are new to digital photography. What a weird thing to say...

Nope. Not new to Leica. Don't own much, now, apart from an M8 but in the past have owned

pretty much everything in the R and M line that was in production for last 15 years.

Not new to digital and not new to photography, either. It's been my sole source of

income for over 30 years.

My comment was only my opinion but I don't think it weird to think that Leica wouldn't devote

any more time to M8 firmware issues given that they have much on their plate at the moment.

That having been said, I'd gladly be wrong and load new firmware into my M8

When using the discreet mode together with continous shooting it is "normal" to get the "Shutter Fault"-message.

It would be nice if Leica would adress this problem in the next firmware update, by disabling the discreet mode when the camera is set for continous shooting.

Also the lousy White balance.
