Some weeks ago I started another survey about how recommendable the Leica Forum is for you - and which issues we should improve. More than 3,000 forum members took part, so we got rely on these numbers. Many thanks for taking the survey!

The results are very interesting for me, covering a broad range including laud and affirmationas well as some severe criticism. In some points the results verified my personal opinion I made up from moderation and discussion with forum members.

Im'm very optimistic we'll be able to solve all issues. This won't happen in only a few days, but I'm planning some interesting things over the next months. I'll assess with another survey if this will improve your rating.

Survey Summary

First result: Most of you would recommend the forum!

Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here…

Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!

  • Average is 7,8
  • Only 10 percent rate us less than 5
  • 76% gave the Leica Forum 7 or better
  • 35% rate us 10! Thanks for that...

We asked all participants who were not 100% satisfied which issues we should improve. The result was suprising for me (and completely different from the German forum):

  • 40% of you want more editorial content
  • 22% would like to have more substantiated postings

Both of these points fit with what most people who rated us 9 or 10 like about the forum: Substantial information (73%)

Improvements

In order to give you an idea what I'm planning:

  • I'd like to extend the forum team - not only by moderators but also by members responsible for various fields, for example welcoming new members or Wiki editors.
  • The Leica Forum will offer more editorial content. I'm already talking to some cooperation partners (like magazines) but I'd really like to publish forum members' content: Articles, portfolios, tests.

An excellent, thorough survey. I am really looking forward to ongoing forum development and continuing to contribute. I agree there should be more editorial content, more substantiated and indepth comment, less bickering and negativity, and nasty sarcastic comments should be banned. Focus on what unites us! A diverse group of people from around the world who share a passion for compact objects made mainly of metal and glass and some electronic components.

A challenge for forum development is making it through while keeping it simple at the same time -- much like Leica itself.

I am also intrigued to know how the German results were different.

Höflicherer Umgangston -- ja, bitte!

(Graphic results on the German forum below.) What does that mean? International bunch are more polite, or just don't mind rambunctious behavior? ;) What seems common to both is more editorial comment and substantiated posts.

There must be a reason some Germans hang out in the international part rather... ;)

Stefan

I hang out mostly in the International Forum. 2 reasons:

1. Some of the contributions in the German forum are decidedly impolite or gratuitous.

2. The Int. Forum presents a wide range of views from many perspectives and countries.

I hope that I don't come over as a pedant. I don't think that it is just a question of semantics.

But I see a difference between substantiated postings and substantial information but you seem to have lumped the two together.

Are you able to check whether your respondents intended different meanings?

To me, substantiated postings might mean posts - I suppose normally photographs - which are accompanied by technical information about equipment and exposure.

Substantial information seems to me to refer to editorial content, articles, reviews etc.

I wonder if any other Anglophones might chip in to say how they understand this.

I certainly see a clearer parallel between substantial information and editorial content.

+1

(Though there are contributions of type No. 1 in the international forum and of type No. 2 in the german forum as well)

I see a difference but not the same one:D.

Substantiated postings are postings that are not mere assertion or abuse but that are informed and knowledgable and explain the basis for what they say, with references to sources and so on. The German forum version is fachlich fundiertere Beiträge which has similar connotations.

Substantial information isn't quite as clear. The German forum has fachliche Informationen, where fachlich means things like "specialist" or "informed" but not necessarily substantiated. So I'm inclined to agree that substantial information includes articles, reviews etc. that are out of the normal run of forum postings.

Isn't there an order of monks somewhere which debates syllogisms which is basically discussing what will be the meaning of words so that their meaning is agreed before the debate in which they will be used?

If that is the meaning of substantiated postings, then it would be very difficult to impose standards on forum members before their posts are accepted.

Even if substantiated postings does not mean posting image data, this would still be very useful and it would be nice if people could be encouraged to do this.

It seems to me that there is only a (largish) minority of people who post technical data in support of the images which they put up.

That surprises me for a specialist photographic forum.

I would like to see more photographs with the basic technical data, even if it's just camera, lens, film etc. I (nearly) always include this info on all my photo postings here, as I find it useful when looking at other peoples posts

Some like it, some hate it, most people ignore it...

I think it can be a first indicator for new members who's a long time and active member here around and who's not.

How about deducting one for each post over 33,000 ?

How about listing the number of images posted ? .... or threads started ?

How about a Snapshot Warning triangle applied by viewers ?

I would fully support the Snapshot Warning triangle- seriously.

A couple of months ago I even ran a thread for folks to post their snapshots in hoping that the irony would not be lost on the persistent posters of their holiday snaps and other everyday rubbish. I misjudged the number of US citizens who are missing the irony gene.

I also started a concurrent debate on honest feedback; this was well supported but many folks said that rather than risk giving offense, they would rather not comment. I understand this but I strongly feel that an anonymous "this is a snapshot" counter would be very well used.

Sorry, I missed the survey and did not take part. :o
