dpattinson Posted February 13, 2010 Share #21 Posted February 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Oh man, I have had some delays in using my thumbwheel but nothing like what is described. Can you still access your images? Can you use the arrows to access all the menu options? This does worry me. buttons still work, it's just some electro-mechanical thing with the wheel. keithprue Posted May 26, 2010 Share #24 Posted May 26, 2010 I have the same problem with the Leica estimating a 12 week turnaround and unable to quote a price without seeing the camera. Does anyone here know how much Leica charges for the fix?
gwelland Posted May 26, 2010 Share #25 Posted May 26, 2010 I have the same problem with the Leica estimating a 12 week turnaround and unable to quote a price without seeing the camera. Does anyone here know how much Leica charges for the fix? Well, it rather depends on the problem doesn't it? Classic catch-22 I'm afraid.
dpattinson Posted May 27, 2010 Share #26 Posted May 27, 2010 I have the same problem with the Leica estimating a 12 week turnaround and unable to quote a price without seeing the camera. Does anyone here know how much Leica charges for the fix? Try spinning the wheel 'vigorously' for a few rotations in the zoom-in direction. Once the zoom level stops bouncing around and consistently stays at maximum magnification it should be fixed. (well - that's how I fixed mine). I sent my camera in and that problem was on the list, but after a while it reoccurred - so you might very well be waiting 12 weeks for nothing. A. Cheng Posted June 15, 2010 Share #27 Posted June 15, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Same thumbwheel problem just happened to my M8 which is less than a year old. Tried turning it ''vigorously" but not getting better. Can't zoom previews, can't scroll menus, it just idles...Buttons work fortunately that setting and shooting are not very much affected. Have to wait until a month later returning to Hong Kong to send it to Schmidt Marketing for a fix.
keithprue Posted July 13, 2010 Share #28 Posted July 13, 2010 Just received my M8 back from repair. Three weeks turnaround and no charge. They also aligned the CCD and calibrated the shutter speeds and light meter (although all seemed fine to me). Kudos to Leica!
Dougg Posted July 13, 2010 Share #29 Posted July 13, 2010 Good to hear of turnaround faster than promised! Have to admit I'd forgotten about the thumbwheel, and only use the buttons.
ipold Posted April 7, 2013 Share #30 Posted April 7, 2013 I know the thread is quite old, however I disassembled my M8 (Leica repair seemed to pricey and I had a precision mechanic at hand^^) and wanted to show you some pictures of the faulty thumbwheel itself. You can see that the gold contacts are slightly bent, however I didn't find any dust or corrosion. Bending them back didn't do the trick, I kindly asked Leica to send me a spare, I'll keep you posted on the results.

philoufoch Posted August 1, 2014 Share #33 Posted August 1, 2014 Hi everyone, I am a retired camera technician, and like a lot of people I encounter the problem of the Thumbwheel on the M8-2. I read a lot about it, try this try that, today in desperation I try an old trick which used to work on COMPUR SHUTTERS . Beware that it is still possible to have firmware issues in this situation. But what I am going to reveal makes sense. After reloading the firmware still no go, then I look on my bench and saw my can of CRC CO CONTACT CLEANER ( precision electronic cleaning solvent no residue and no corrosive to plastics) the camera being off, I sprayed gently around the thumbwheel, rotate the wheel two three times, turn the camera on and bingo the thumbwheel has its functions back. Try the thumbwheel three hours later still working. problem solved. I hope this will help others, just remember, this is a precision contact cleaner for electronics do not use the stuff for releasing bolts and nuts. Cheers from Australia
