28mm for Leica M8?

I would love to buy a 28mm lens for my Leica M8. However, I'm not willing to pay for the Leica 28mm f/2.8 ASPH Elmarit-M. The Voigtlander 28mm Ultron is too large as well. Once I get into Contax territory, a used Leica 28mm can be bought for just a little more. The Voigtlander 25mm f/4 fits the bill perfectly in size, but since I wear glasses, the 24mm frameline is too wide for my viewing pleasure. However, I may need to make do with this.

A look around ebay for the past month or so reveals that Leica must not have made too many versions of the 28mm lens for the M Mount. Is this true? Also, what options am I missing. I want a 28mm, so it can act like a 35mm (or 37mm) on full frame.

My criteria is small first, cheap second. I will not pay more than $800-1000 and would like to keep it around $500-750. Am I pricing myself out of any 28mm lens besides Voigtlander?

M-Rokkor 28/2.8 for Minolta CLE. 3mm longer than the Elmarit asph. Matches well Mandler lenses. My favorite combo with R-D1 and 35/2 IV, 40/2 or 50/2 from same period. Beware of white spots like those though.

what are those white spots?

if you can live with a mere f/3.5 don't forget about the wonderful and compact cv28/3.5.

i shot with this before i found a 3rd version elmarit which i really enjoyed on my m7, which then led me to the 4th version elmarit which i think is a beauty of a lens.

Ah yes, I have been looking at that lens as well... but it seems they all have spots and if they do not, they will get them eventually no? How's the image quality on these with and without white spots?

Mine has just a bit of them. Being a 30 yo lens i don't expect significant aggravation any longer but i may be wrong. IQ is close to that of Leica lenses from same period or current CVs like 35/1.4 SC. With no visible focus shift and less flare than the latter though. Couple of samples with R-D1 here:

Thanks for your help. That second image is quite nice.

You might consider a Konica Hexanon-M 28/2.8. These occasionally surface for a reasonable price and by all accounts are similar to or better than Voigtlander lenses in terms of IQ but the build is normally very good although I don't have personal experience of these lenses.

Nevertheless i just bought a new old stock 28mm Ultron 1.9 and am very happy with it. Compared to the current 2.0 this one doesn't suffer from any focus issues and looks considerably nice as silver w/ dark hood on a black body. I saw a couple of posting on photo.net from users who ditched their 28 Cron in favor of this little gem.

Might have white spots issues as well.

I use the 28 f3.5 color skopar daily.

I really enjoy the way it renders a black and white image.

It's also very small and compact.

I had the 28 Biogon, but ended up selling that and keeping this.

Here are two examples.

Yes, that's the one, LCT, although I wasn't aware that it would suffer from white spot too. How does it compare optically with the Elmarits?

I have no experience of the Hexanon 28/2.8 sorry. Last time i've seen one on e**y, it was selling for 600 EUR, which is too expensive IMHO. I picked up a mint Zuiko 28/2 instead for 230 EUR. Not an M lens though.

Oh, sorry, I had assumed that the you own the lens in the picture. :o Yes, Id have thought that 600 Euro would be too expensive for a Hex 28/2.8 (unless, say, Sebastian Salgado or Garry Winogrand had owned it ).

I have the 28 Rokkor on my M8 and I like it better than my 35 Summicron M.

The white spots are a "flaking" of the rear coating. Mine has been like that for the 3 1/2 years I've owned it and used it first on the RD1 and now the M8. No problems with the images.

If you use it on the M8 you should send it to DAG to have the mount modified to bring up the 28mm framelines. A small thing.

What does it bring up before the mod? Hmmm, I may just go with a X1 for my 35mm lens needs... ;)

Wonder if i could take my same pics as above with the X1. Can one zone focus with this little beast?

Why would you need to zone focus to get the pics above? You certainly could make those photos with an X1.
