Has M9 inspired you to sell M1-M8.2?

Sold M6TTL after getting M8. Sold M8 after getting M8.2 and realizing I rarely bring both bodies with me. Sold M8.2 after getting M9. Also sold two 3F's somewhere along the way. But will keep M3 and 3G with matching Leicavit 'forever".

Now the real question is what to do with R8 and R glasses which I have not used for year and half???

I heard that Leica is working on a smaller version of the S2 now. you are able to use the R lenses on this camera but manual focus only. the new camera and new lenses will be AF

I actually was all set and ready for buying a M9.

I had set myself the upper limit of paying 5.500,- EUR max for a black sample, to pick up in shop.

When I investigated asking prices though I thought … keep your M9s until they rot away under your … you know the rest.

Dealers asking prices at that weekend were partly above the 7.000,- EUR !!!

I looked further and found a very nice M8.2 for a good price, and I am more than happy to have saved myself several thousand EUR, as I have already found out, that I would not be willing, to cash out 5.500,- EUR for a body, that does not fully meet my expectations.

When I payed 3.000,- EUR for my first D3, I was blown away by it's performance for the consecutive months and still am amazed today, what one can do with it.

The M8.2 though does indeed show some quirks (common with the M9), which I would feel slightly less comfortable, if it would have had cost me double the price - certain refinements and a full frame sensor aside.

If prices come down into sane regions, I likely would not sell my M6/M7/M8.2 for a M9, but get it additionally.

Other unused camera gear though is likely to be sold off - strange isn't it?

I have no rational answer, but I won't. Anyway the M8u is valueless anyway as it has my name engraved on it, and I keep it in the back of my car as a go-anywhere-take all-the-kicks camera and my M8 classic is the first M8 sold in the Netherlands, so I'm keeping it out of sentiment.

I suspected your answer would follow these lines of reasoning. I feel a little like you in that my M8u has some sentimental value, no signature or first addition, though. But, once I got the M9 and shot with it, my sentiment for the M8 faded. The new girl made me fickle.

On the other hand, I did upgrade the M8 with VF/Shutter/Glass and that would almost be the price I'd get for it, if that has anything to do with reason. Also, I think I was the first one to suggest I'd keep the M8 and put it in the glove box. Why not. And, I must say I go back and forth between reasoning that I couldn't buy a better POS for the money I'd get for it and what ever I got probably wouldn't take my Leica glass perfectly.

In the end, I guess if you traded me a Summicron 35 in exchange for my M8, I'd take it! Final answer.

I posted a response very early on in this thread very early on stating that now that I had an M9 I would in all likelihood hold onto my M8 & sell the M8.2.

However it became a real pain in the ass swopping UV/IR filters when using the M9 & M8 in tandem. So when my dealer called me 2 weeks ago to inform that he a 2nd M9 for me if I wanted it, I took the plunge and bought a second M9. He took both my M8 & M8.2 off me at a really good price which he deducted off the cost of the M9. For me a no brainer, it makes much more sense to me.

Agreed with above. I would find the 1.3 x crop and UV/IR cut swap too annoying for daily shooting. I use my MP as a second M body when I need to (or want to), and I also am enjoying the X1, which is another option as a second body with high IQ at a useful focal length, with no need for lens swaps.

Sold the M8u in August last year and the M8.2 in November. Now have two M9s. The only thing I regret is the loss of the black chrome finish - I seriously preferred this. For the rest, no problems. I'm very happy with the M9s. I kept an M6TTL for auld lang syne - will I use it again? Maybe...

I see this thread keeps resurfacing. I'm hanging in there with the M8. When the M10 makes its entry, perhaps then I will sell my M8 or just keep it as a second M digital. It will also depend on finances, I won't pay $9000.00 for an M10. I continue to enjoy M8 shooting, and BTW I never sold my M2.

gonna wait till the performance takes a giant leap from the m8.... would rather spend the $$$ on glass.

I second that. But then I waited a year for my M8 and paid it new from Leica dealer 30 % less.

Yes, we've agreed about this before and I'll use the opportunity to agree with you again. I too prefer the bog standard black chrome finish - even with the somewhat shiny worn to grey corners that my first M8 had. Black chrome has a 'cold' utilitarian quality that seems appropriate to a working tool. The M9 black 'paint' just seems phoney to me.

I somewhat hastily sold my M8 bodies back in January and rather wish I'd kept one. For all the advantages that the M9 has, there was something about the easy combination of M8 and 35mm lens that worked for me in a way that the M9 and 35mm or 50mm doesn't quite match.

Interesting thread. I went back and tallied the results:

SELLING:

M8's - 26

preM8's - 9

Keeping one M8/ Selling one M8 - 2-3

KEEPING:

M8's - 4'ish

preM8's - 13

I tallied the results and used a bit of my own filter. I didn't count anybody that did not have an M9. There were several posts about what I would do if/when I get my M9 that I didn't count. I only tallied those that actually had the M9 to be inspired. Because, at least two posters actually changed their vote once they had the M9 and sold their M8. Also I created a category for those that sold one and kept one.

Very few are keeping their M8. Those that kept M8's were Jaapv (I know you are going to keep both), Marknorton (Who'd buy his anyway? And, he'd have to put it back together before he could sell it!) Vertekijker (keeping one as back up). And, at least another red badged Leika lover. :D

Mostly, people mentioned keeping there film M's (and glass) and the main reason for selling them was to finance the M9. The reason stated to sell the M8 seemed to be finances and not using it for one reason or another because of the M9.

For one reason or another, the M9 is causing a lot of what I'd economically term; An increase in the Velocity of Leica. The M9 has to be causing a big reshuffle of Leica M cameras. A lot of new owners of M8s have to be coming on board as well as new M9 owners.

Rick,

I'm a keeper.

M4/7/8

R9

I keep them all and will even when buying the next one, possibly 9, certainly 10.

Yes, the M9 did inspire me to sell off (actually trade in) my Leica MP, and I haven't regretted it for a second. As wonderful as film is (and it is wonderful) I am taking a lot more photos with the M9 and enjoying the heck out of it.

Best,

Jeff
