Strange Leica camera spotted...

Hmmm...so all this time people are bitching about a digital R solution when canon already makes one (with adapter)? Buy the adapter, get a canon and use your "R glass."

I love these quotation marks.

So much contempt from an "M glass" user.

Unleash the trolls!

No, no, no ... you misunderstood. I have no issue with R lenses... I just don't like "glass"... I prefer "lens." I'm not even an M lens user... :D Can't afford to be. I just see people complaining that there is no solution for their R lenses and apparently there is. Canon makes some really nice SLRs, so slap a R lens on there and get to work... that was my point. However, now others have pointed out that it is not really a good, solid option. Sorry all. :(

... an additional thought:

As Leica seem to be able to buy Sony/Nikon's D300S-sensor for their X1 why shouldn't they be ably to get the D700- or even D3x-sensor as well.

I am not familiar enough with the body outlines of Panasonic's previous feeble attemps to gain a foothold in DSLRs (anyone ever seen an DMC-L10?). Could the picture the TO took in Norway be the Leica variant of a new PanaLeica ff-DSLR? Does the form/style fit? I think it does have a certain resemblance with the outlines of said L10. But maybe it's just a poseur, all right...

Canon cameras cannot be used with all R lenses, due to a problem with the mount-to-mirror distance.

On the other hand, I cannot see why Panasonic would develop a FF system with R mount... May be they interested on it? This would imply direct competition from Sony, Canon and Nikon, and fighting for a fraction of the high end market... I think Panasonic is mostly interested on mass markets...

Well, while I have no doubt the original image is not a prototype leica. and even less can I imagine said prototype showing up in mexico right now.

This is a interesting though though...

Clearly Panasonic would not make or even think of making a FF evil with a R mount, after all the entire point of the EVIL cam is making it smaller..

But, one could conceive making a full frame electronic viewfinder which would take a optional adapter for R lenses. and while smoking the same joint its not too far fetched imagining Leica licensing their R lens catalog for AF use with a new FF panasonic Evil camera. these remade R lenses would naturally use the new EVIL-R mount which is shorter, maybe around 25mm instead of 50-60mm for SLR's

Panasonic would have the best chances of succeeding with such a idea if they actually did convince leica to license their R lenses to the project. simply because they would hit the road running, with a catalog of high-quality well known glass, instead of a selection of "panamatic dlux glasss" and they would probably have 10.000 sales to hanger-on R users hoping for a R solution.

Yes, an EVIL camera with 24x36 sensor is an interesting concept, on paper. Panasonic doesn't need Leica to license R lenses technologies, but they would need the "Leica" brand on their AF lenses for such a new system to succeed. R lenses would benefit from an adaptor with electronic contacts, for lens recognition, etc. The point is if Panasonic would be interested in such a concept. It would be a translation to a much larger format of the micro 4/3 system. Cheaper and smaller "full frame" cameras, even for professional use. Maybe that is the only way for competing against Canon and Nikon in the high end market (Sony is realizing this is more difficult than expected). But I don't know if this is a potential niche for market growth. In any case, it would be a low volume- high margin segment, and this is that most companies are looking for (the micro 4/3 is, for the moment, one of those very rare "Promised lands", others being the rangefinder niche or the professional 24x36 cameras). Those market positions deteriorate with time (and competition), but companies can enjoy it while lasts). Leica is the only digital rangefinder manufacturer, for the moment; Panasonic/Olympus are alone in the small size/large sensor market, but Samsung, Ricoh and others are coming; Canon was the only professional "full frame player", until Nikon reacted...

You can create one of those niches or find a way of attacking the insiders' position in one of those niches. Maybe an EVIL 24x36 camera is a good weapon for Panasonic, but I am not sure that niche is large enough.

Happily, I can attest to the fact that Alex knows what Leicas look like, has a baby and an iPhone. BTW, it's perfectly feasible to take pictures with a baby on your hip :-)

I'm thinking that if you'd want to use R lenses on your Canon/Nikon/Olympus/Pentax, you'd probably be willing to re-brand your camera.

So, my bet is this: it's not a protoype stolen from an underground facility patrolled by feral wannabe MP collectors, just a decent DSLR that has been rebranded at home.

Now, that explanation was a little dull, so let me up the ante a bit:

Of course, that home-based rebranding might even include a bit of re-tooling. If you can afford it (or if you're studying industrial design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and have access to their extensive workshops and laser sintering machines), you could build a custom casing for your camera. That would likely be a helluvalot of work, but you could also wrap car modeling clay (moldable when warm, hard when cold) around your DSLR and give it the shape you wanted.

I wouldn't bother, but if you have the inclination, the talent and the time, it's a fun way to spend your time.

Bo, where is the Mexican connection? The exif data for the image shows that it was taken in Ski, Norway. The Google map shows some sort of shopping centre.

I hope you don't mind but I cropped and edited attached to see details a little more. The tape is "clear." It's like the new car model covered in tape and rigid-board to hide the new features.

Even if it is a "Erlkönig*" based on a S2 Body - they would use a body part without a Leica engraving on it .

Strange

* I don´t know the english word but it is "the new car model covered in tape and rigid-board to hide the new features."

All Leicas have the unlock button for the lens mount on the right side of the camera. The camera shown has on the left side - just like Canon or Olympus.

I don't see any reason why Leica should all the sudden place the button on the opposite side compared to all former bodies (including the S2).

Therefore, it is most unlikely the the camera pictured represents a real prototype.

Best regards,

Alex

It looks like just a person who feels that "the lens makes the camera" (which in large part is true) A nameplate excised off of an old trashed Leica, a little superglue.... or printed vinyl letters...and they have found their R10.

The camera body shape looks very Canon-ish to me. Maybe the tape is to hold the Leica badge in place? :D

Flash socket is black, not chrom like Canon or Panasonic and the S2 had the lens remove button on the same site.

Maybe it is a new model with a removable grip and the size of the old R Series.

That was my dream.icon11.gif

I can't help it, but for me the camera looks like an Panasonic Lumig G1 with a Summicron 50 in a Novoflex-Adapter, which would make sense. To use black tape to mask the <G1> and to add a fotocopied <LEICA> is not so difficult.

Just my 10 cents of wisdom.
