Hello John'

I agree there is something special about this image, and the contrast between object and sky is quite extraordinary . However, I feel the framing could've/should've been portraiture and not landscape. Maybe I just see it in a different way, but still forgive me for messing about with your image I wanted you to see the difference .

John, this started out as a good image and ended in a Fantastic B&W one. Well seen and captured.

Best Azzo

Thanks,

I have to say that this Digilux-3 is really growing on me as a photographic tool. I bought it after I returned my M8 so I wouldn't feel too depressed :( but I think it will be a fine camera for me as I learn to use it better. I still have and love my M7, but the Leica community should not look down their noses at the Digilux-3.

I don't think that will happen. The Digilux 2 has been well represented here and photos from them have gotten a lot of positive review. A lot of us have high expectations for the Digilux 3. I thought seriously about getting one but didn't because I found out how big they are.

The b&w version is, in my opinion, far stronger than the color because it becomes more of an interpretive design image than just a representation of reality. Often, the realness of color doesn't work for photographs like this.

Brent,

I found "big" to be relative. The DL3 with the standard Vario-Elmarit is certainly smaller, lighter and less noticeable than my 5D with the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L :) As you see, the Leica-designed lens is sharp and responsive, and and there are already a whole range of 4/3 lenses available from Olympus (and more coming from Leica next year) should that appeal to you. I'd like to see a small 17mm (34 mm equivalent) prime and that combo wouldn't be that much larger than my M7 with the 35 ASPH f/2 for "street work". Hopefully, I'll have more time this weekend for more fun photography with the DL3 so I can wring it out a little more.

Dan,

The shot was in late morning, about 11 AM. It was cold and the winter sun here was very strong and contrasty. I especially wanted to see what it would to with highlights and shadow areas, and was pleased to notice detail at both extremes in this stark image.

John,

One thing I heard about the Digilux 3, which maybe you can comment on, is that when you shoot a couple of RAW files and then take your finger off the shutter, the camera writes from the card during which time you can't take another photograph. Is that the case? That has been one of my main concerns.

You got my curiosity up so I just went outside and fired off a burst of 3, followed immediately by another burst of 2. Absolutely no delay during the writing-to-card operation. There is an icon in the viewfinder display which shows that the camera is writing, and it definitely continued to write during the second burst.

The camera was set to JPG Fine with RAW, so it actually records 2 images per shot as you'd expect.

So based on my quick test, what you heard was wrong. If you get the opportunity, try one out.

Thanks much. I'll do that. What do you think of the high ISO quality? I wouldn't need more than 800, but it would be nice to get good quality at that setting.

One thing I should mention is that the buffer, using the settings I described above, only held the 5 shot double burst before filling up. Perhaps that's the basis of this rumor.

This doesn't bother me at all because I don't intend to use the DL3 as an "action" tool. For assignments where action will be on the agenda, I lug out the 1DMK2 (talk about BIG :D )

I'll try to get some high ISO stuff in the mix. But again, if an assignment calls for paid work in that arena, (such as theater or movie stills), the 5D comes out of the bag. Like you, I don't expect much more than decent ISO 800 from the DL-3, but I need to check it out.

Well, Brent, my schedule can wait a bit:)

Here are 2 links to large JPGs I stored somewhere else. They are of a crystal memento on my desk top under tungsten lighting at ISO 1600, f/4.0, the camera was hand held, and the focus point was on the edge of the crystal about 1/3 up from the bottom. I'm looking downward at it so everything is not in focus. Shutter is at 1/30 (OIS Enabled)

These were from the RAW and processed in PSCS2 with no noise reduction or sharpening applied.

What do you think?
