honcho Posted August 9, 2012 Share #421 Posted August 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Depends on where I'm going and the reason for the trip but if it's for fun an MP, 35mm Summicron asph, 50mm Elmar-M f2.8 and 90mm Elmarit-M f2.8 don't take up much room. If I want MF as well, I'll add a Fuji GSW690111.

akiralx Posted August 10, 2012 Share #424 Posted August 10, 2012 That 90 macro IS the lens to have for travel. I even take the macro accessory just in case. Crisp as any 90 lens other than the 90APO IMHO. The 90 Macro-Elmar is crisper under 6 feet.
MarkP Posted August 10, 2012 Share #425 Posted August 10, 2012 THERE IS NO PERFECT TRAVEL KIT...just the optimal kit for that particular trip... M9 (+3 batteries) 21 28 50 (±90) ...and a fast 35 if I decide I want to go out with just one lens. The specific lens within each focal length would depend on where I'm going. Small desktop tripod (maybe) Crumpler 5 Million Dollar Bag

swamiji Posted August 10, 2012 Share #427 Posted August 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) THERE IS NO PERFECT TRAVEL KIT...just the optimal kit for that particular trip... I am not sure that is even true. I have taken a lot of short, and medium trips around China. I have kept track of what I took and what I used. After a time I gave up, there was no pattern. The optimal kit for a particular trip is always done in hindsight. Basically either you take everything, or you learn to use what you took. You can guess, but thats all it is. Thats why these questions always comes up. I have come to the conclusion that you should take what you know, and don't worry about it. Your skill/creativity will make up the difference. kahveorta Posted August 11, 2012 Share #431 Posted August 11, 2012 For my last family trip to Bandung, Indonesia, I packed the following: 1. M9 with handgrip 2. 21/2.8 ZM Biogon with vf 3. 50/1.5 ZM Sonnar 4. 2 extra batteries in a ThinkTank battery holder 5. Spare SD cards in a ThinkTank card wallet The above packed into a Fogg Lyre. During transit, the Lyre is packed into a Samsonite backpack which also contained the charger and an iPad equipped with card reader. It works very well for me, and during my next trip to London, this is what I intend to do too, but perhaps with a different set of lenses.
businessasusual Posted August 11, 2012 Share #432 Posted August 11, 2012 For every trip I have taken - I've been heavily weighed down by equipment. (one of which included Canon 7D (with M9) and two prime lenses - sold Canon the moment I returned). Not to mention, not like the "good old days" - we have to add all the battery chargers, laptop, senor cleaning tools. Just too much. Next trip M9, 50mm Summilux ASPH &Vlux 3 (yet to buy) and that will be it. This way I can carry camera bag everywhere without pain and have all the range I need on hand. My Vlux1 is light, believe Vlux 3 even lighter - managed to produce razor sharp images with Vlux 1 - and need autofocus sometimes. M9 is used when I have more than a minute to hit the shutter. So adding to this would just be MPB 17" for processing @ hotel.
elgenper Posted August 11, 2012 Share #433 Posted August 11, 2012 Back from 3+ weeks of holidays. Packed the same gear as I always take: M9 with 35 and 75 Asph Summicrons, 3 batteries and around 64 GB worth of cards (in 4, 8 and 16 GB sizes). All packed in a Billingham Hadley Small, together with non-photo paraphernalia (including mosquito repellant...). The M9 charger stayed beside my bed, ready to do its work at nights... Never once wished I had taken anything more.

NZDavid Posted August 20, 2012 Share #436 Posted August 20, 2012 D-Lux 5 is very handy and ultra light, didn't mind taking it in canoe or wading in the lagoon in Rarotonga. Plus M6 or M7 for slides which are still a delight if it is a holiday, or M9. 35/2 Summicron-ASPH is pretty much the ideal travel lens. 24/28 if I need wider and old 50/2 proves its worth. algrove Posted August 20, 2012 Share #437 Posted August 20, 2012 In my Billingham freebie I will now reorganize. M9P M9M 35/2, 50/2 or 50/1.4, 75/2 and if needed 28/2 or 21/3.4 For special trips where interior or night street shooting much anticipated then 21/1.4 or 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/0.95, 75/1.4 and even 135/1.4. For the Mandler trip 28/2.8 E60, 50/1.0 E60 and the 75/1.4 E60. One filter size sounds appealing. Of course extra SD cards Of course extra batteries Of course Air and accessories for card reading and backup all the extra stuff we all seem to bring along in our camera bag Tripod or monopod + cable release Oh almost forgot, grab the wife and say let's go, "I'm already packed." P.S. Time will tell if I can use more smaller f2.0 lenses with the MM while pumping up the ISO somewhat. That would be a welcomed situation since they are lighter too and in this way I might even be able to sneak one more into the bag like the 28/2. jlindstrom Posted September 7, 2012 Share #440 Posted September 7, 2012 On a recent 2 week trip: M9 35/2 Biogon 50/1.4 pre-asph 90/2.8 elmarit-m - couple of sd-cards, only needed one. rest were backup - charger - bare bones bag evolution - ipad ipad & extras stayed at the appartment. BBB-E worked nicely with the m+3 lenses, bottle of water, sun glasses and wallet. Easy & light to carry all day. And all this in scorching heat, at best +43C in shade! --Juha
