Very nice and simple. Did you buy the lens bag in internet? Looks just perfect for a extra lens.

It's actually a compact camera pouch from Domke, but i bought it for this purpose, and it even gives you a "free" the best camera strap on the marked since it comes with the pouch, just snap it off and attach it to your M9, and use the pouch on you belt with the build in belt hinge...all of this for $9.99

(I know Domke make special pouches for lenses but they are way to big for M lenses)

M9

21/2.8 ZM

35/1.2 CV

50/1.5 J3

135/3.5 Canon

The nokton is really too heavy for travel, but I just adore the unique character of this lens, and so in an inevitable moment of weakness I throw it into the bag.

My absolute minimum travel kit is the M9 + 50/1.5 in an old leather ever-ready case, and the ZM21 in a pocket. I can be happy with this setup if space is at an absolute premium and I will only have limited time for photography on a business trip, but I know that there will be shots that I cannot get in the absence of the 35 and 135.

On my last trip to Asia I had to cut down on stuff and ended up only taking my M9 and 35 Cron IV. And it turned out to be a very good choice, hardly any moments where I wished for a different focal length.. To India next April I'll probably bring the Elmarit 24 also though, and a M6 for backup.

Above I saw the recommendation to bring the universal Apple plug. A good one but what I always take is the multiple distribution power outlet that takes European plugs and is quite small (the one on the photo). In hotels you often have only one free power outlet and to charge batteries, phone, ipod, laptop etc. at sort of the same time this has proven very handy. This way you also need only to bring one converter plug.

Also very handy is the Apple Airport Express for hotel rooms where there is no wifi but an ethernet cable instead. With the Airport Express you will be able to set up your own little wifi network and move the laptop away from the desk, to bed or balcony, connect a smartphone at the same time and even a travelmate in the next room can use the wifi..

Best, Ramon

This weekend I'm in New Orleans, took a single carry on bag to the plan and carried my Macbook pro in a sleeve.

Took the M9, with collapsible Elmar M 50 in a black label bag Kando case and put that and the Noctilux 0.95 in the suitcase also, first time I took the 0.95 in it's Leica sleeve. Took an extra battery also. This isn't a bad combo, but not usually what I travel with. If I'm gone for a week or two I'll grab a bag and throw in a few more lenses, last trip I took the 90/2, and the 35/2 also. I'm loving the 50 collapsible. I'm waiting for the perar to come back from Japan. I'm thinking minimal so I may just take these two collapsible lenses on my next trip and see how it goes.

Aw heck, I'll throw in my $0.02 or so...

1. My typical kit, including 1 M9 all fit in a Billingham Pola, using socks for lens protection:

-- 24 lux

-- 35 lux II

-- 50 lux asph

-- 90 Macro Elmar

2. Accessories

-- Charger

-- Rocket blower

-- SD card case with 5 16 GB SDHC cards (SanDisk Ultra II's)

-- 4 batteries

2. On the next trip, I am thinking 35/75 combo, maybe throw in a 135 in there...

The D-Lux 5 would come for the ride as a back up...., along with a charger,

Okay, I'll play. I'm about to leave for a week of business and a little pleasure in Hawaii and I'm taking:

M9

MATE

90 Elmarit-M

35 'lux ASPH V1

plus a couple of spare cards and batteries.

This will be my first trip with the MATE (early birthday present to myself) and I'm really anxious to see how I do with it.

Hi Ashwin,

Your "typical kit" is spot on aligned with my analysis. It is essentially the same range I will be selecting for my longer travels (more 'cron and less 'lux, etc.) for now.

But the analysis fortunately also told me that there is a place and a time for all my lenses, even if, realistically, the 21mm will not get much use.

And, of course, if I "only" had the 28/50/90 set then I would still be perfectly happy. If this long thread confirms anything then it is that there are no rules that should stand between you and your photographs :)

Happy travels, Per.

  • 4 months later...

M9 body with 2 Summicrons: 35 Asph and 90 Apo Asph. Two extra batteries & charger. Two 16 GB cards, one Sandisk and one Lexar so that I don't confuse them. Microfibre cloth and white card. All in Billingham small Hadley bag. No filters. Possibly: Elmarit 24 Asph & finder.

In separate luggage: Giottos rocket blower. Bottle of Eclipse solution and 3-4 Pec Pad spatulas to clean the always dirty sensor. MacBook Air 13" with 128GB SSD disk, LR3 installed and screen profiled. Universal plug adapter.

Back-up: my wife's GF-1 with 1.7/20

Short trips = M9 + 35 Summicron + 90 Elmarit M + 3 batteries + 3 8 gig cards.

For long trips I add a 21/2.8 and a charger. Everything fits in a Pelican 1200 case (thank you Jaapv) which fits in my carry-on backpack.

I travelled in Dec with M9/50 Lux, Canon 7D, 24L and 50L (now sold), never again. Nightmare! Next time - M9/50 Lux, X1 and Vlux 1 - put them all in one bag and nowhere near the weight of previous trip. Each has 2 spare batteries. I carry all on as hand luggage having had bad experience with bag going missing. I would never let this out of my sight for one second even with substantial insurance cover. Use one of those cases with wheels, cabin size - this takes MacBook Pro too. (for Airport) and shoulder bag for getting around once there. Roll on Nov 11 - next trip. :)

M9 (which is finally arriving tomorrow :) )

21/2.8 Biogon w/ Zeiss external VF

35 Summicron ASPH

50 Summilux ASPH

90 Tele-Elmarit "fat"

3 batteries, 4 SD cards, charger, rocket blower, note pad & pen

Everything goes in an A&A ACAM-1000 which I carry on the plane and then use to keep all my stuff together at the hotel. I pack my Domke F-803 in my suitcase and this is the bag I carry because it's small and discrete. I decide what I'm going to carry for the day depending on circumstances (usually body & 2 lenses). The 35 Summicron is my standard lens, the 21 is for tight quarters, architecture and landscapes, the 50 Summilux is my low light/amazing lens and the Fat T-E is my "I'm going retro and want to shoot portraits and stuff and have fun lens". Everything gets loaded and edited on an 11" Macbook Air, which is about the same size as an iPad and MUCH more versatile and backed up on an external USB HD.

If the Mrs. is along she shoots the D-Lux 5.

small trip:

unconspicuous bag (fabric and leather from "Nature et Découverte" M9 35 lux (new) 75 cron

3 batteries, charger, universal adapter, eclipse bottle plus two or three spatulas, SD cards 32 and 16 gigas. A small paint brush to remove dust from the body and microfiber clothe to wrap the body in.

Big trip:

All the best,

Jean-Luc from Montpellier
