Guest WPalank Posted October 8, 2010 Share #141 Posted October 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I travel a lot where there is no electricity. The ten batteries will last me about a week. Then I check into a hotel to take a hot shower and charge all of the batteries before heading back out. I'm usually lucky to find one working electrical outlet. The new charger doesn't take long to charge them all and it's much smaller than the old one. I tried carrying solar chargers but they don't work very well. Tina Tina, Don't forget you can plug the charger into a cigarette lighter if you are traveling by Land Rover or some other sort of automobile... My point was, what if your one and only charger malfunctions? That's the reason I carry the little Ansmann Vario, as a backup for all my dedicated chargers. Tom M Posted October 18, 2010 Share #152 Posted October 18, 2010 whenever I cannot catch any sleep at night I mentally pack a camera bag for a 1 year trip around the world. the contents change through time. currently it is a black domke 803 filled with: - a M9 - a 50 lux pre-asph - a 35 cron asph - either a 21 or a 24 elmarit asph, (deciding about this usually send me to sleep) - a ricoh grd3 - a minox tripod the leica charger and the ricoh charger with apple plug - memory cards (haven't decided about how much of them), stored in a think tank pocket rocket - 4 Leica batteries - 2 Ricoh batteries in my suitcase I'd have the smallest notebook available (Apple: Shame on you for not providing a sub-notebook with two or three external hard drives, to be send back periodically as a backup I'd have a m8 with 35 cron pre-asph readily packed at a friend's house to get UPSed to wherever I lost my bag. What would you take? Watch that Minox tripod! It severely scratches the bottom plate around the tripod bushing. After it damaged my Contax T2, I put a cardboard ring around the screw and so far, it hasn't damaged either my M7 nor the M9, while the CT2 is in hibernation. t. From my experience, I would also add a short mains electricity figure 8 to standard round 2 pin plug lead. The Apple adapters are excellent in the first and second world most of the time but in the third world, you may often find that the electricity sockets are in a position where you cannot get anything other than a plug into them and there is no room for a charger in the same position. The other thing that you are very likely to come across is where the socket is just hanging out of the wall on its wires. With the old M8 brick charger, which did not have the option of using a lead, a number of times I have had to prop the charger up with a bent coat hanger to prevent the wires being pulled right out of the wall. A small insulated screw driver to tighten the screws on the wires at the back of the plug comes in handy as well, when you see sparks as you move the socket around, when trying to plug in a charger. hvacigar Posted October 18, 2010 Share #154 Posted October 18, 2010 Oh what fun...while I wait for my M9 First I have to say that up until I get my M9, I will still be lugging my 5DMii all over the world, but after I would prefer to carry (I must pre-apologize to fanboys as I go for great budget lenses in Zeiss) - Leica M9 - Leica M3 w/Voigtlander meter (takes care of the battery problem doesn't it - Zeiss 35mm f/2 T* Biogon - Zeiss 50mm f/2 T* Planar - For low light only, the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 (I would love a Lux 0.95, but who am I kidding) - 3 batts for the M9, two extra batts for the Voigt meter - Unless I am in a city, Velvia color and Ilford Delta 100 and HP5+ 400 B&W - Hyperdrive UDMA - Domke F-803 with Zipshot in tow Not as gaudy as some people's, but I gotta stay true to my situation
doug_m Posted October 19, 2010 Share #155 Posted October 19, 2010 Although its quite pricey, the new 35 lux is quite exceptional and will be hard to leave out of any travel kit. In fact it may just be the ideal 1 lens (with M9) go light option. To my eyes, at f1.4 it seems to match or exceed the 35 cron at f2 in terms of contrast and overall IQ. It will be interesting to see what the true experts say once the new 35 lux has been in use for a bit.
menos I M6 Posted October 19, 2010 Share #156 Posted October 19, 2010 Although its quite pricey, the new 35 lux is quite exceptional and will be hard to leave out of any travel kit. In fact it may just be the ideal 1 lens (with M9) go light option. To my eyes,at f1.4 it seems to match or exceed the 35 cron at f2 in terms of contrast and overall IQ. It will be interesting to see what the true experts say once the new 35 lux has been in use for a bit. The 35 Cron ASPH has qualities with its extreme flatness of field, very low distortion and extreme sharpness, that neither the old, nor the new 35 Lux ASPH match. The new Lux ASPH only improves on the close focus performance of the predecessor and the milder focus shift (which both were already exceptional with the older model - we are on an already very high level and incremental improvements are small overall). The users, who have used and continue to use the new version love it. I was not so patient, to wait for a new model available and purchased a "old ASPH" new and do not regret this a bit. Initially the monetary value of my purchase has broken in, but I expect this to even out over the next years with 35 Lux ASPH prices coming up from the now 2000 − 3000 EUR range - although the value is the least, I think about now. It is a fantastic lens - either version.

I am a big fan of the Billingham Leica M case. It is very well made and "matures" well. It is actually only big enough for an M body and three lenses unless they are very small ones. However, you can very easily add on up to 2 AVEA pockets at the sides for extra lenses, which makes for a very flexible package. The front zipped pocket is good for 3 or 4 batteries, cards, filters and an SF24-D flash plus the usual small junk we all carry around. My only beef is that as supplied, the case only has a shoulder strap (albeit an excellent one) and no pick up/carry handle. I have had a local leathersmith add a matching leather handle. I sent a picture to Billingham and they agreed it was a first class improvement but Leica hold the design rights to this case and they are not allowed to alter it - seems silly to me. Picture below, showing case with one of the two AVEA pockets mounted. FYI, the blade on the measuring tape is extended 19cm out of its case, to give an idea of the size. I believe it also comes in black. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! It is the F-803. You can see the great review on the bag from Steve Huff here.
