What sort of control is Leica supposed to have over dealers? It is rather the other way around. Leica would certainly not be helped if B&H decided not to stock Leica any more.

No - camera stores are their own masters, and if they decide on a deposit policy it is up to the customers to make up their minds. If you don't want to pay a deposit -that's me-, let alone the full price, you can refuse and go somewhere else. Nobody is forcing anybody to hand over their money at gunpoint. Is is a bit strange to agree at first and then go off to a forum and complain. You want a deposit - no deal. As simple as that.

jaap,

im not agreeing and then going off. im saying i understand the timelines of handmade.

i also think a deposit is fine. but 7k is alittle more than a deposit.

leica can impose whatever conditions on their dealers they want.

any manufacturer can.

my main (poorly stated) concern is that i believe people who

are independents, shouldnt be forced to pay large somes of money for gear upfront to remain

competitive in their profession.

all replies indicate that i have a problem with B&H. i dont. ive used them for 15 ys.

i was using B&H as an example.

also the tone of some replies i read as directed at me personally, like perhaps im disgruntled.

im not. i can afford the camera and my m8 is fine until i get an m9.

im actually on the fence about the m9.

my whole point was about fairness in business.

best melissa

Melissa,

$1k is a deposit. $7k is a pre-paid order. Big difference.

As regards the need to pre-pay to remain competitive (on the assumption that you'll get the camera quicker), that's not necessarily the case at all. For many of us there has been no requirement for a deposit nor any advantage in pre-paying for the camera. We got the camera as soon as the dealer got the camera without any requirement for $$$ up front at all. You just need to find the right dealer and/or build a relationship with them. Each dealer is free to set their terms and conditions to ensure either serious pre-orders or commitment from customers - heck, I'm sure some will use this approach to fund their business ...

Where do you get this notion from? What kind of conditions are you referring to?

PS: There is a little button on your keyboard just to the left of your RETURN key. Please give it a try! :)

I got burned by B&H recently. They were 'Accepting Orders' for DMR focus screens and charged my card when I placed an online order. A month later when I asked 'Where is it?" someone actually checked and discovered it was out of production - couldn't be delivered. Sure, my card was refunded, but I lost on both the exchange rate and the bank fees. They shouldn't charge until they are delivering. Then they sent me a 'Customer Satisfaction Survey'. Ha! It'll be a cold day in hell before I order there again.

interesting you chose parisians to use as an example....

i guess that's what the forum is for, discussions. but if you're not happy with the policy, then don't buy from them. it's as simple as that. they fully disclose their policy. if you want the m9 so much that you're going with this policy, then don't 'bitch' about it. the choice is your's.

Why are you attacking me? I wasn't bitching about them. I just wanted to avoid generalizations. And I picked new York and Paris because our cities are sometimes tarred by the "rude" label. I am from New York and I know there are far more nice people than rude peopIe and I also think that Paris' reputation is undeserved.

All these generalizations are what leads to prejudice. Anyone who wants to write off B&H because they misbehaved can and should do so -- but shouldn't complain about "New York" shops.

And there was me thinking that Americans were full of bonhomie at Thanksgiving...

Please, stop having a go at each other.

Thanks

No Andy - it's turkey they are full of, so they have both indigestion plus a hangover today - hence the bile. Also Leica dealers are closed and that would make anyone grumpy ;-}}

What I don't really appreciate in B&H «pay now and wait» policy is that it smells of blackmail: if you want to be on an M9 waiting list, sir, you will have to pay for it in full, otherwise you will not be put on the list. They actually make you pay a premium to guarantee you your place there, and that is the interests on that money. Of course, they give you warning, and you don't have to do business with them, but I think it tarnishes B&H's image.[/quote

As you already stated, you do not even think that the M9 exists. So why spend money on it?

Did I say I would spend money on it? I don't think so. No, I will not spend money on it. And if I did, it wouldn't be at B&H.

I don't attack people. Especially not with happy faces.

I'm just trying to encourage proper punctuation. It's very hard to read posts that aren't punctuated properly.

Also, not that it matters, I'm not American. :)

Now, now boys and girls. We mustn't start our sentences with conjunctions. :)

What I find fascinating with this thread, and the LUF in general, is that as soon as somebody dare say a little bad about Leica, or a Leica product, and/or some organization, say, randomly, B&H, someone is sure to rise up against him/her, flame him/her, and generally mock him/her. It seems that to express one's disagreement, some people believe that verbal roughness is mandatory. Yet the poster was NOT attacking anybody in the forum.

But then again, like somebody already said, «words are cheap, it has no consequence for you, no responsibility involved...» No wonder.

Fascinating.
