Bitched like Hell...

Another hilarious thread. Thanks Leica Forum!

I agree that it is silly to pay full pop up front for something that is not is stock. However there are so many dealers who won't ask you to do this that I don't see why anyone would agree to this. Most other dealers will take a refundable deposit to guarantee your order.

But to get all mad at B&H for not giving you a delivery date is equally silly! Leica is not guaranteeing delivery dates to their dealers, so how can the dealer guarantee a date to the customer? Would you be happier if they lied to you?

Didn't you ask about an estimated delivery date before giving them your card details?

Ken.

I agree, and this seems rather obvious. If you give your card details with no promise or estimate of a delivery date, then you have no right to "bitch like hell" — or to bitch at all — later when there is no estimated delivery date. The current delivery situation affects every dealer worldwide, and shouldn't be used to blast a camera store employee. :(

I have an M9 Grey paid for at B&H but noi camera. As of last week. So I just called them and politely asked for an estimated deleivery date. Guy put me on hold for a while and came back with...nothing. So I told him off: I am a longtime customer. You don't take 7k and tell a customer you can't even provide an ESTIMATE of delivery. Am I supposed to gove you 7k for something I don't see for two or three months. You'd better talk to your manager. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Anyway, maybe I shook the ice a bit. Hope so. B&H is usually great to deal with, but this crap about taking a 7k payment and offering nothing, not even a hoped for date, is INSANE!!

To repeat what has been previously written here, and is displayed online if you click on the M9 available for pre-order link on the web site:

Important Notice!

This item is currently not in stock. We are accepting orders and it will be shipped when in stock. Orders will be filled in the order they are received. Your card will be charged upon placing the order.

If that isn't clear enough then I really, really don't know what is. It's not like you haven't been told by B&H what the policy is.:confused:

This forum is not about rational decisions, it's about Leica! :D

Spoken like a true Leica connoisseur!

Jeez, so much hate and discontent over a digital camera...

Oh, to hell with it: I'm going to cancel my M9 order and buy a Super Elmar 18/3.8, viewfinder and 500 rolls of Tri-X for my MP - and I'll still have $1000 US left, compared to the cost of an M9! :D

That will only give you a start towards developing the film, scanning,.....

i posted this in another thread...this isnt directed at B&H just the whole pre-pay thing.

i am understanding of leicas predicament in terms of production. handmade takes time. we order we wait.

in a way leica is endorsing a back-up system, nikon, canon... and thats ok too.

what im most disturbed about is that leica is allowing their big distributors to force their clients into pre-pay and/or large deposits.

i realize that im in the us and policies may differ here than in the rest of the world.

here money in the bank can collect interest, not to mention be used to pay bills or whatever.

i feel its unethical ( or just simply wrong) for places like B&H to take 7k lock it up and collect interest for 3-6 months.

7k @ 5% a yr = $350.

leica has control of their dealers. is it possible that they are un-aware that the us dealers are requiring this?

ive been told that the US dealers legally cant make you pay in advance but i believe its a grey area. im not a lawyer...

what i dont understand is why am i the one saying this? why arent i reading this posted by someone else.

many photogs here have been in the industry for decades and are independent.

theyre entire world is about cash flow.

im not saying this to start a bitch fest, but to simply point out that like leica we are small

and we cant afford to tie up our money.

btw i too am a long time customer of B&H and have had ok experiences with them.

so please forum members dont think this is some thinly veiled complaint from a passed experience.

i will post this in the thread where the guy went off at B&H so mods, please excuse.

best, melissa

Here's my two cents: I don't know why people order from stores like B&H over the phone, but in a lot of cases it is in order to avoid the local sales tax. Since I have moved to the ranks of people buying Leica equipment however, I have been swallowing the sales tax at my local dealer in exchange for a relationship with someone who has my back. I'm not saying that someone at B&H cannot be that person for you, but living in Los Angeles, the choice for me is clear: I'll buy from Tibor at Samys (and no one else there) or from Tony at Popflash. I know they have my back when something goes wrong.

There's gobs of other dealers out there who are taking orders with no money down. No one is forcing you to order through B&H. B&H wasn't even taking pre-orders (over the internet) until last week. See the poster above. He called B&H, placed an order and got his M9 3 weeks later. How many people on this forum ordered elsewhere back in July and are still waiting? Oh, but no money exchanged hands so they don't mind. So if someone CHOOSES to secure a place in line (and what may be a shorter line) by paying in full, what's the big deal? Those who aren't comfortable with that have a ton of other dealers to choose from.

It's interesting that the Original Poster, who also has an order for an M9 with David Farkas, hasn't come back since making the original post.

I smell something fishy here.

..interesting and valid discussion, though

+1. It is take it or leave it, and if customers take it, it's their choice and (potential) problem.

BTW, it is incorrect to suggest that dealers in Europe cannot ask for pre-payment or non-refundable deposits. Of course they can -- and some of them do. This is called freedom of contract. I personally won't do it in case of the M9. However, if you order furniture you have no choice as the dealier places a specific order with the manufacturer and want's to be certain not to get stuck with it afterwards. And these are not made to measure orders.

just for the record- my dealer never even asked me to put the full amount down- I suggested it - to lock in an exchange rate. I have no problems with the situation (beyond not having an m9 yet).

latest news from the dealer is that I 'batter up'- is that how you Yanks say it?

having paid in full I am expecting a flawless home run...
