JE Posted November 20, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 20, 2009 No matter who he is Richard, you've done an exceptional job rendering him. There is a slight smile in those eyes despite his uncooperative lips. What's he tearing? Very well done. Jon

PhotoArchival Posted November 21, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 21, 2009 Agree with the praises above. But what is going on with the vignetting on the left hand side? I think you should bring that detail out a bit more as well. Amado

semrich Posted November 21, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted November 21, 2009 Thank you all for your comments and praise for this photo, they are greatly appreciated. It is worthwhile for those interested to Google Ara Guler for a more comprehensive history of his acheivements, they are impressive. I am honored to have had the opportunity to take and post this photo. Sometimes events conspire to bring such a photo into being, here's the story behind it that may answer some of the questions; I have his autographed book, a photographer friend who just moved to Istanbul from California saw it and even though it is out of print managed to get a copy. He picked it up at the bookstore the day I was going to show him around some good places for photos. While out I took him to Ara Cafe and as luck had it he was there, he autographed his book and spent a little time chatting with us. Before he had to leave we asked if we could take his picture. All I had with me that day was my IIIf and 50/3.5 Elmar (a lens just five years younger than him) loaded with HP5. The light was very low and I took two shots at 1/20 sec. As I was focusing and faming he played for the camera by ripping up a paper he had in his hands, with a serious expression and playfulness in his eyes. My post processing skills are in their infancy, though maturing. The vignetting mentioned is probably my attempt at burning in the corners, and in the future as I get better at this I may rescan and see if there is more detail to bring out.
