topoxforddoc Posted November 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) .. the last of the many - Vulcan XH558 flying at Goodwood. Valiant, Victor and Vulcan from the 1950s and 1960s. Not sure how much longer she'll be flying though - she just eats money! DMR 280/4 APO
Advertisement Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 Hi topoxforddoc, Take a look here V Bomber. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Pecole Posted November 14, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 14, 2009 Superb pixes ! I took the liberty to copy same and mailed to my old friend Air Vice Marhall Sir Dennis Mitchell, former captain of the Queen's Flight, Vulcan pilot and commander of a V Bombers Wing. Thanks. elansprint72 Posted November 14, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 14, 2009 These were almost an everyday sight when I was growing up; the factory was just a few miles from where I lived. It is closing in two years, what will happen to the Vulcan standing outside remains to be seen; it is the only one painted in the original white livery. If you put Woodford Cheshire into Google Maps, it is hard to miss. Charlie, three superb photos, lets hope the money keeps coming in.
Guest suilvenman Posted November 14, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 14, 2009 Now that's what I call a bomber. Great set, Charlie. Cheers, Ken.
topoxforddoc Posted November 14, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted November 14, 2009 Pecole, Pete and Ken, Thanks for looking. She is one amazing plane. A silent assassin with an amazing roar when the 'burners go on. As for the pics, it just goes to show how good the 280/4 APO is. It's easier to focus on big targets like this than small birds like Doug Herr does. Pecole, I'll put some full size files up on my website later and you can let your friend, the AVM, see them. biglouis Posted November 15, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 15, 2009 Magnificent captures. If anyone missed it there is an interesting book: "Vulcan 607" which tells the story of the preparations and events of the Vulcan raid on Port Stanley airfield during the Falklands war. Well worth a read if you are into these aircraft. LouisB PS Pete, I think I've related this before but I used to live near the RAE in Farnborough as a kid, so I saw Vulcans quite often, especially the interesting variant which tested the Concorde engine. topoxforddoc Posted November 15, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted November 15, 2009 Paul, Virgil, Daniel and Louis, Thanks for looking. I hadn't seen or felt a Vulcan before this meeting (unlike Louis and Pete). Just an amazing plane. Pecole, I have put some full size pics up on my website now. stuny Posted November 16, 2009 Share #12 Posted November 16, 2009 Charlie - It's great to see this beauty flying, and your shots are wonderful for detail, moment and composition. They also deserve going back into the original files and post processing them. With this one all I did was itereatively increase the shadow and highlight sliders, though much more with the former. I also cloned out two dirt spots on the sensor.
topoxforddoc Posted November 16, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted November 16, 2009 George and Stu, Thanks a lot for posting. Stu, thank you for tweaking the last frame. I wasn't particularly satisfied with it as it went up, unlike the others. I had already tweaked it a bit, but yours is much better. I'll go back to the original RAW. Guest flatfour Posted November 17, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 17, 2009 Great shots of an historic aircraft. I was just leaving the car park at Goodwood when the Vulcan display took place and as it powered up into a climb it set off half a dozen car alarms with the thunderous vibrations.
