No problem with Venice here

Polls can be set up sp that the voter's identity is available to be seen. Maybe that's part of the way to do it next year. I might set up a test poll, so that we can are how it works when not anonymous

I've not been to Venice before, can't say its in the upper part of my table of 'places I must visit' but it is obviously beautiful and a good location for photography, if dare I say it, a bit obvious as a choice.

I just hope my financial position by then is such that I can attend!

Oh Botherations!

I have only just seen this thread and because I didnt get to vote for my first choice "Venice" - I will not go to your final choice of ... "Vencie"...

I see Robert's point that this may well become a "self-regulating- clique" which may result in "mobbing" or "exclusion" of any that do attend and are not part of the "clique". However, in absence of any other (fresh) input into this debate, it should be fairly easy to surmise that the others are not worried about the choice of venue.

In fact I would say that the choice of the venue and date are the least limiting factors in a person's decision to attend. Therefore I am happy to leave it the way it is: which is that those that DO attend, vote and choose a short-list which is then placed for the greater forum to vote on. I think the fact that only 50+ people voted out of the hundreds that are members and active contributors says a lot to begin with.

I think that getting 20 people attending a voluntary international event from such a small group is already an achievement. I will pencil this in my wife's diary now and am looking forward to Venezia and the glass blowing from Murano as well as the overpriced town centre.

For transportation: I think the Orient Express would be my preferred choice.

Is the UK crowd upset at the fact that Venice was chosen or is this just banter?

Carl

Banter, Carl.

But a somewhat serious attempt at opening debate on how to get more entrants from different countries.

I think Andy's idea might have some merit.

I don't have a problem with Venice, Barcelona or Wetzlar.

That's lucky :)

I have always seen the Challenge as a very good excuse to go to places that I wouldn't necessarily go to without a reason. I wouldn't have gone to Valletta without the Challenge, nor Krakow (and maybe even Berlin) and I would have missed out on so much and some very interesting and decent people.

OK, so I have been to Venice before, but I have also been to Wetzlar and Barcelona. Any venue would have been fine, but if you haven't been to Venice before, then this is a great spur to try to get there. It really is one of those places that people should see and is, in my experience, one of those places that is a lot more than you expect it to be.

As someone who voted for the first time this year, but has not been on any previous Challenge, I welcomed the opportunity as there is a possibility I might take part. I doubt that I would have cast a ballot had I felt that there was going to be any subsequent scrutiny. It could be a deterrent to those in the same position as myself - at least now I have some form of ownership. As it happens, I opted for Wetzlar, so in the event it did not influence the outcome. :o

Incidentally, I think that it is something special that through this forum a bunch of enthusiasts meet up in real life and someone takes on the responsibility for arranging it (I have read Andy's blog and I take my hat off to him). I see no evidence of this kind of thing happening on other online forums. I could be wrong as this is one of the few places I have found where there is consistently informed and relevant debate, so I don't tend to venture elsewhere that much.

Regards

Mike.

Very comfortable with it being Venice - it's somewhere I've not been and other than the cost and watching out for little dudes in red macs armed with carving knives, I'm keen.

The Orient Express sounds an interesting idea...

Interestingly my perception was that the debate into voting integrity actually began when there was a significant risk that it might not be Venice...:)

But note Seeingeye's comments above. I think they're hugely relevant. ;)

Returns broomstick to cupboard (at least I got the clutch fixed) looks for lifejacket and Italian phrasebook......:p

I plan to visit the 2010 Challenge regardless of the outcome. If a last minute voting landslide happens. I guess the difference for me would be the time to stay. Barcelona and Venice certainly justify a week, even if one has been there before.

The English analogy to having a Challenge in Wetzlar should be a Challenge in Milton Keynes, good occasion to visit Leica and have something serviced.

A week in Wetzlar....? A week in Milton Keynes... ? A week in Wetzlar....? A week in Milton Keynes... ? A week in Wetzlar....? A week in Milton Keynes... ? A week in Wetzlar....? A week in Milton Keynes... ?

Nope. Still can't decide.

:D

Unless you are into deeply exploring galleries and museums, I am convinced that 4 days in any city is enough time to spend, before you end up walking the same streets and doing the same things.

57 members have now voted for the 2010 location. I wonder how many have any real intention of attending and competing?

It's pencilled in and that leaves me some time to "persuade" my colleague to replace me on stage managing that week-end;)

 ....... " It really is one of those places that people should see and is, in my experience, one of those places that is a lot more than you expect it to be."

I second that !

Sign me in, I will be there! I know Venice quite well, and I don't know it at all every time I go there.

October is a fantastic season for the city, if we're lucky we could find fog at night/dusk as well. cool!

I'll be sure to put that down on the weather request form when I send it in....

It will be great to see you there!

with apologies to Mario Puzo :)
