omega1848 Posted October 23, 2009 Share #1 Â Posted October 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, I already asked in the german part of the forum, but so far it looks like there is not what I am looking for, but maybe you have some advice. I am looking for a list with the (rough) serial numbers of Leica M lenses younger than 2000. So far I only came across lists with 19xx - 2000, but not for 2000 until today. In the german forum is a link to a website where you can enter the serial number and get a result, but since I do not have the excat numbers, and also if I am "hunting"for a lens onsite (at used dealer, or wherever) I might have no internet connection, so a handy list/ rough estimate would be great. Â If you have any links/ info, highly appriciated! Â Thanks! Â Oliver
Advertisement Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Hi omega1848, Take a look here Serial numbers for Leica M lenses younger (!) than 2000. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
UliWer Posted October 23, 2009 Share #2  Posted October 23, 2009 If you are looking for a rough overview in which year a M-lens since 2000 was produced, I'd give you the following suggestions:  I know that a lens with No. 3881xxx is from 1999 and one with 4084xxx from 2009.  So I'd roughly estimate that lenses from 2000 start with 3890000 and lenses with about4085000 were just made a couple of weeks ago. So during ten years we have about 195000 different serial numbers. Divide this equally for each year you would not be completely wrong assuming lenses' numbers from  2000 to 3909500, 2001 to 3929000, 2002 to 3948500, 2003 to 3968000, 2004 to 3987500, 2005 to 4007000, 2006 to 4026500 2007 to 4046000 2008 to 4065500 2009 to 4085000.  I know that a lens with 4045xxx is from 2008, so my rough guess is one year off; Leica's lens production seems to have been slower during the first years since 2000, as the output increased with lots of new types since 2006. If you accept +/- one year, you may use my estimation to get an idea of the production times.  After all, there is no difference between new lenses of the same type from one or the other year. omega1848 Posted October 23, 2009 Author Share #4 Â Posted October 23, 2009 Thanks a lot, this is very helpful and think this is a great idea to figure out some rough estimates! Â May I ask other folks who have lenses above 4xxxxxxx to reply back the year? Â This would be a great help for everyone and I am sure we can add this to the Leica Wiki! Â Thanks! UliWer Posted October 23, 2009 Share #5 Â Posted October 23, 2009 O.K., its dark here and nothing else to do. Â But you have to take into account that the date of purchase may differ a lot from the date of production for the lens may have been on the shelve for years. So you can only be sure, if you have more information, e.g. that the lens was first produced in this year, or it was sold out and you had to wait for a new production series: Â 4039xxx from 2007 (may be 2008) 4045xxx from 2008 (sure) 4069xxx from 2008 (sure) 4084xxx from 2009 (sure).
