Dear all,

In the next few days I'm going to launch a new start page which will show up at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/.

The current forum start page http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/ will stay as it is

Here's a prevew

New Start Page (beta version)

My question:

What's missing?

What's important to you - where do you go first when visiting the forum?

Regards

Andreas

Andreas, I'm not in favour I'm afraid. For me the forum is about, well, the forum. I can see why you want to have something more visually appealing for the casual visitor, but I'd probably keep the existing layout bookmarked.

Also when I click on the international section from the new front page I get a fully expanded version showing all the sub-forums underneath one another. Again that's not my preference.

Just expressing my view, I'm sure I'd learn to adjust to the new version <grin>.

When I click the link, it takes me to the same (former) start page. I cleared my history, cache, cookies, etc but it still does this. any suggestions?

This happens in both Safari AND Firefox

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/newstart appears in the address bar but then it switches back to http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum and therefore loads the original page

Andreas,

First reaction : wow !

I'll try to explain why :

- former (current) startpage and layout is in fact a standard based pre-cut layout you refined and tweaked

- this new layout is rather a magazine-on-Internet layout : much more appealing and uncluttered, yet offering a lot more informations

at first sight (I showed it to a prominent webdesigner here and he finds it appealing too)

- this gives a homogeneous continuous look to the forum, the buy & sell page (of course), and even with the LFI website, while retaining its own character

More in details :

- I really like the headings (magazine-like, as said) and the left dialog with the "last threads" links.

- A good idea to have a first page which is "lively" and edited, with editorial choices for what you deemed most interesting : New Leica Book, Leica Forum News, etc.

- the four thumbnails upper part of the page are really convenient for a fast browsing to relevant entries

Just one remark

When in the english version, I still have "Aus den Alben" mentioned. Well, I don't mind practicing my german, aber es scheinte mehr klar zu mir ob ich hätte "From Albums" here. ;)

Finally, replying to your more specific questions :

What's missing ?

Just now : nothing

What's important to you - where do you go first when visiting the forum ?

To Leica M8 & M9 threads

I'll try to bring more reactions later on.

Looks good to me. I will almost certainly keep my "forums" bookmark. I was interested that when NOT logged in, pictures are available from the recent links on the left. That is good. While you may not want to provide total picture access to non-members, there should be some photos available to the casual observer.

Cheers,

- Will you still keep the mini gallery on the first page?

- How about manual download page? I think all Leica-ers need to see manual sometimes, especially newbies.

- Do we really need to see that FAQ on the main bar? What if we switch between Register, FAQ, Community, and Calendar bar with Forum, Gallery, Wiki, and Buy&Sell bar? I just think we normally use the Forum... bar more often than Register... bar.

- i think "We are the world's biggest Leica community ..." can be put next to the logo instead of putting next to the Leica camera that keeps updating. You also can utilize that space too after you move this sentence up.

- Other than this, it looks great.;)

Congratulations on several counts.

You are initiating some great changes and I have never seen so many replies on this forum in a row that are so positive. You should take compliment from this.

I think the Magazine style front page leaves you or the “Committee” of Authors a way of putting some spotlight and emphasis on subjects, areas etc that are topical. You are all living and breathing the site and you can do this in an informed way. I think it’s a real benefit.

For some time now I have been meaning to ask the question for those that use the site say every day what’s their process and for those that visit say every two weeks what’s their process of working around the site. I am very intuitive with software and usually drill down to most capabilities of how applications work but I must say with the Forum I have an idea that there are some ways of moving around the site and following the threads of your interest etc in a better way than I do. The point being there are ways of using the site and there are features on the site that improve your viewing experience. Anyway if this question was asked it might help you know what viewer’s expectations are and that might influence the way you utilize this front page which I think has terrific potential. Note I say expectations because you actually know from the back end statistics what viewers actually do on the site.

Thank you for your continued efforts and hard work to deliver a site that does a great job and brings a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people.

Hallo Andreas,

Auch ich finde die Veränderung der Website überaus positive. It's great to having this new option. Isn't change the only constant in life :)? Thanks for putting so much work and time into this.

Have fun,

Bixi

Sorry my fault - should work now:

Andreas

It looks lovely.

But like Steve I think I'll be keeping my bookmark set to http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/ because that's where I want to be.

What I'd really like though is this new elegant skin applied to the main forum :)

cheers

Michael
