Petition for demanding Leica a real chrome M9, not painted

I've yet to ever see the color of a camera affect the image quality of my work.

I think you'll find that walking around with a pink Leica might well affect the outcome of street photography.

Guys and gals, this is purely a question of opinion and personal preference. Could we leave out the insults and other intolerant comments completely, please?

I can think of places where a Pink Leica would be a plus for street photography...

You will note that I carefully didn't put any positive or negative spin on that :) Situation would be everything. I am sure a pink M would be more welcome among the plushie crowd than photographing soldiers in Afghanistan, for example. Anyway, my point was that colour can actually make a difference. Black can be slightly more stealthy, against black clothes, and chrome evokes that "grandfather's old camera" outburst from some people.

For my uses, there is likely to be little difference. I will use the M9 to find out what it is like to use a black M, since both my M6 and M8 are chrome. My feeling in general is that the people I have photographed in the street have either not seen me, or have looked at the camera and not cared.

My 5D with 24-105L generated very different feelings. Once I was photographing a street market with my 5D and a Leica 80 Lux-R when a guy next to me pulled out a huge camera with a huge lens, and you could almost feel the crowd moving back from him. After sneaking closer, I realized that it was a 20D with the 24-105L on it, i.e. smaller than mine. Soon after that I sold my Canon system and bought the M8. Except for the loss of true macro, I never regretted. I added a Contax 645 AF to get the macro back.

I don't care what color the M9 is black, grey, chrome or Hello Kitty Pink. I'm just glad to have it.

Does 'real chrome' take a better picture?

John, I suspect that the white M8 would. It is pricey. There must be a reason why anyone would make such a thing, put in the market and why anyone would buy something like that.

Think about it, chrome boots, chrome hat, chrome belt buckle, chrome rimmed sunglasses, chrome body..

i almost picked up a chrome double-stroke M3 because it was covered in gorgeous Paradise Pink. it was so outrageous that i think i could have gotten away with almost anything -- no one would have taken it seriously, especially matched with my long red hair. and, yeah, i probably would have matched it with pink snake skin boots just to reenforce the absurdity.

alas, the guy wanted too much money for it and nothing as gorgeously ludicrous as Paradise Pink is available... sigh. i could've gotten away with murder.

Yes, I would prefer chrome cameras (silver is my first choice, then black) over painted cameras.

Anyway, I find painted black cameras beautiful (I don't know if as durable as black chrome).

I love the silver chrome cameras. So beautiful, and unique in the current market.

All my M cameras I bought chrome, since 1976. So one could call me a chrome fan.(Although I had one painted black). Now I was forced to get a black M9 - and you know what? I really like it.

Same here. I could have had the color changed as I just had the M9 in Solms, but I decided not to. I can't explain it, I'm not sure even if I bought one more M9 that I wouldn't get that one in black as well. Then when M10 come along I might go back "home" to chrome.

+1 I'm for chrome. It's probably too late for the M9 but when the M`10 comes along, this should be standard as it has been in the past. No cutting corners to save a few pennies, quality should not be compromised especially at these prices.

ArtZ,

You've been on a roll these days: first, with that (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/103726-what-would-happen-if-m9-flawed.html) thread about the causes of the production delay and now, a petition for real chrome. I love this upfront attitude. Bravo for leading the way!

Count me in, too!

Cheers,

Arthur

Arthur,

I will probably buy a M9 next year, when it will be available in shops without preorder.

But there're two things that really bother me with the M9: The magenta cast "on the left" and the fact there's no classical chrome model.

As we don't know yet if the magenta cast is just a firmware issue or, worse, a misconception concerning sensor position or a microlenses fault as some people pointed out here, I prefer to wait until we know more.

We have also seen some weird artifacts (lines) on images taken with the M9 and people has also reported some bugs (freezes...).

So, as I have two M8s working perfectly, I prefer keep using them until Leica will get rid of all these problems reported. What's the point of having the latest Leica M when you cannot be sure if the pictures will be good?

I suppose I could live with a black or steal gray painted M9 but it really irritates me. Maybe I'm optimistic but Leica will probably consider to offer the classical chrome model (for the same price) sonner or later... so, this is one more reason to wait for a few months... ;)
