The beautiful chrome finish on the other two cameras puts that cheap Grey suit that your M9 wears to shame. They'll probaby come out with a pin striped limited addition for the Wall Street theives. They can offer it with a collapsable 50 to match the economy.

.... chose the grey it's great, I love it!

..... Whatever decision Leica makes they are always screwed by this lot. If Leica had offered chrome and sapphire glass etc. and let's say the price was an extra EURO500.00 we would have seen a bunch of vitriolic screaming threads about how we're being ripped off!....

Hey, what kind of nonsense is this? Some people (you among them) prefer the grey one. Go ahead, it´s coming; no one denies your right to choose it.

But some of us would like the nice, durable chrome plating that has been available all the time. We don´t like a painted-on imitation, and that´s what we feel this grey paint is like, and imitations have a way of looking cheap...

Otherwise, I´ve nothing against new designs and finishes; when I bought my Panasonic G1 a year ago, I chose the blue colour, just for a change. But that was a camera model without a tradition, and the blue finish didn´t imitate anything (except possibly a Fisher-Price toy....:p ), so OK with me. As for the M9, I´ve ordered a black one; had chrome been available, I´d have chosen that - but I´m not going to postpone the whole acquisition waiting for it.

Besides, I´m not aware of any obligation to say yes to any change just because it´s claimed to be "new" (as if imitations were something new...). Anyone has the right to his/her own taste, and if it´s not catered for in the present sortiment, we have the right to ask for it, OK?

So, starting to condemn us in language more fitting for a bunch of football hooligans talking about the opposite team is just bad form.

Simply because WE are the customers. WE keep this company in business with our purchases. Leica doesn't make camera decisions in a vacuum. It better be customer driven or they won't be long for the market place. It's you that don't get the point.

If Leica did make their decisions based on poles and petitions in this forum alone it would have released a FrankenM.

Vocal and demanding do not necessarily mean representative.

They seem to have done OK since 1913.

Customers have been pretty consistent as to what they expect , want and need from Leica and Leica has responded. They've done O.K. since 1913 because they have catered to their customer base. When they stop doing that is the day they can close their doors. Without customers there is no Leica. Vocal and demanding gets much more attention than writting letters to the CEO and I would imagine that this forum is pretty representative of where they derive their income so I think they are listening. I'll grant you, they have made some pretty ridiiculous special editions for the "more money than brains" crowd but a Franken M? I don't think so.

What about a petition to "ask" Leica to make one, not "demand" that they make one?

I don't think we can make any demands on Leica but the cheap gray paint thing is ticking people off. My suggestion is that you don't buy it if you feel cheated. Watch how fast Leica will get the message if you protest with your wallet. This may even provoke a rebate for the cheap paint model.

If I were buying an M9 I too would want the option of the silver chrome version. Leica is cutting corners, but only because people keep paying for the product. God knows where they will cut next? Most of us deserve what we pay for.

I am definitely disappointed by the lack of chrome. I have a lot of chrome lenses, and they don't look right at all on the black camera. They also look less than ideal on a steel grey model.

I saw the cameras this week at a shop where the Leica reps were, and clearly they are hearing this a LOT from customers. When I told him my disappointment, he had a weary reply to the effect that they have heard a lot of that, but then a don't-you-like-this-it's-really-very-nice sort of pitch. At that point, another customer also piped up. Hopefully the rep was taking this message back to Solms.

I cancelled my order for a M9 as soon as I realised a chrome finish was not a option, will keep my M8's and may never change if Leica fail to provide the M9 with a more durable finish, or up the price further for providing it. Am a lifelong Leica man BUT .......

I always bought two at a time, one black one silver, ever since I screwed up a bunch of photos when I thought I was doing color when I was doing monochrome. My worst error.

Not a problem with digital of course.

I saw a Leif 2 1/4 that was blue/green. It did not look like a $20.000 + camera.

I am for real chrome or black. Paint is for automobiles and houses and office furnature.

I am leaning towards black on this one. I don't mind the grey so much, and I don't mind that only paint finishes are available, but I am not so keen on the panda look of the grey model. My M8 is silver-chrome, and I often wondered if I would have liked black better (I think the answer is no, but I don't know), so I am taking this opportunity to test that out. I think... I am on the waiting list and will likely get to the front around the middle of December, so I have some time to hear stories on the forum about the two colours.

The black of the M9 is the same as the M8.2. I compared both in the shop yesterday, and they were identical. The paint on an MP is much shinier, and apparently less tough. The M8 has a different, more matte finish which I never really liked that much.

Current backlog numbers are suggesting that Leica can sell whatever colour. So the sad news for chrome "demanders" may be that they will have carry on whining for a little longer. ;)

In what way does expressing an opinion on the desirability of a silver-chrome version of the M9 constitute "whining"? This forum seems to be slowly descending towards incivility.

Personally, I'm not in the near-term market for an M9, having only recently acquired an M8.2. But if and when I did move to full-frame, I'd be looking for the traditional silver-chrome finish. That's what my IIIg, M2, M5, M6, SL2 and M8.2 have.
