Zeiss 18 Distagon Question

I going to purchase this lens and would like to know if it's

possible to use a step-up filter 58-60 and a original E60 UV/IR

filter...?

Iv'e seen people using step-down filter from 58-55 but looking

at the images, it seems to be enough room to step-up instead

and then get to use my own original E60 Leica filter...

Here's the image that makes me think this is possible:

Don't bother puting a IR filter on it. Pictures are worth with as without.

Just don't take photographs of synthetical black cloth. ;)

It's a wounderful lens, i love it much! :)

Here 2 picts taken with Zeiss Distagon ZM 18mm without IR filter

(and without 6 bits code, a screw is in the way)

PS. And if you can't live without an IR, take a 58mm Heliopan.

Thanks, but i take pictures of people (with clothes, very often syntetic) so shooting without a filter is a BIG no no...

I know i can use a 58mm filter from B&W, Heliopan and such, but my question here is,

can i use my E60 with a step-up, since it's much cheaper (and probably better) to use

what i already got, if possible...

But thanks anyway..

Well, i just got a try with a 60 to be certain.

The answer is, if you use the Distagon shade then;

No, you can't use a 60mm filter, even with an adapter.

If you don't use the shade, then the answer is of course; use a filter as big as you want. :D

Ok, but looking at the image there seems to be room for the "extra" diameter from the pictured 55mm filter since the original filter thread is 58 and the hood extends outwards it just seems possible, but again i might be wrong...? Has anyone tried to see if a 60mm filter fits on the outer/inside of the hood...?

This is exactly what i did. :p

Just think that a conversion ring down to 55 is smaller as an up ring to 60.

The hood is bayonet fitting.

As your picture shows, a 55mm filter with ring fits well inside the hood.

Just think about that you don't need a (very expensive, although very good) Zeiss 25-28 viewer. The 3x Leica one have a 24mm view. ;)

Philippe,

Thank you for sharing your photos. I think you have made up my mind for me. I will either sell my Biogon 21 or the spare coded 50 Summicron-M I have and get a Distagon 18. It is difficult to see on a screen how sharp the lens is. How sharp do you think it is in contrast to some of your other lenses? I had the old Zeiss CX/Y Distagon 18/4 for my Contax RX and that was one of Zeiss' very few rather ordinary lenses along with the 25/2.8 Distagon (very soft). They were both old designs going back to Contarex days, so I am guessing the new Distagons may well be wholly new designs. Having read Sean Reid's latest reviews, it would seem somewhat in contrast to their appearance, B+W filters are closer to the Leica ones in performance than the Heliopan. I am using a 58mm B+W on my Voigtlander 35/1.2 Nokton and it works just fine. I have a profile for DNG conversion in C1, which I use for that and my 35 Biogon. Due to the non-availability of a Leica 43/0.75 filter, I am also using a B+W on it. This profile has a slightly desaturated green and it then seems to give about the same colour balance as the Leica filters I have on various other lenses. BTW, you can easily fill in the screw holes on CZ lenses with a Tippex or similar white typing correction pen and then code over the top. This is better than paint as it dries in seconds and is easily removed.

Hello Wilson,

Well I do not make such differences, as i almost only have Leitz-Leica lenses. ;)

The next one up is an Elmarit 21mm Asph and down is the Ultra-Wide-Heliar 12mm.

This Zeiss set well in between.

But, have a look here at 100% crops from RAW, converted as TIFF 16 bit, of the first picture handheld @ 160 ISO :

This is taken without an IR filter and no 6 bits coding.

A friend who bought the same lens at the same time have had some try with the IR filter, he was disappointed.

As we got a 24mm on the M8, vignetting is only light on the corners.

Again, I love this lens. ;)

I've spent many a summer in those apartments, sitting & swimming on the rocks just past there. It's good fun to watch the bow wave from the ferry catch many unaware tourists out.:) Truly a lovely part of the world, very fond memories.

Thanks, i will go for the 55.... :-)

After thinking about it, why not use a 58mm B+W 486 UV/IR Cut filter, with no step-up

filter, will this fit right on or is there something i'm missing...?

Since the 43mm Original Leica filter don't fit because of the 0.75 pitch i wonder

if this is the case with the B+W filters also...?

Sorry for all of this stupid questions:-)

Again thanks...

Alex my choice would be a step up from 58 to 60 and use the leica filter and code it for the WATE which the default is 18mm so no screwing around with menu option. Looks to me plenty of room for a 60 mm there. Very tempting lens, I'm playing with the zeiss 15mm right now and also very tempting lens and it is sharp. Like all the super wides with the firmware the best match is the Leica filter , just like the WATE is a better choice. You still may get some cyan drift leftover with a B+W

Alexander,

The Leica 43mm UV/IR cut filter (silver only) has a 0.5mm thread pitch like the E39 filters. However, nowadays the industry standard for filters over 40.5mm is to have a 0.75mm thread pitch. Hence if you have a CZ 35 Biogon, you need a B+W or Heliopan filter to fit its 0.75mm thread. The Leica 43mm one screws in about half a turn, then binds.

This is excatly what i wanted to do, but then Philippe D. said he had tried with a E60

Leica filter which did not fit (with the hood that is, but rather important on a WA)

But more info on how to fit my original E60 filter on this lens would be wildly appreciated.

Thanks.. :-)

But are you saying that only the silver Leica IR filter has 0.5mm pitch, and not the black one, it can't be that easy...?

Did not fit , seems like plenty of room there. That changes things. maybe just buy a step down than from 58mm to 55mm they are cheap and just try any 55mm filter to see if there is vignetting. BTW i have the Zeiss15mm for testing and did just that went from 72mm to 67 mm step down and put a B=W 67 on it since i had this hanging around and NO vignetting. depending on the 18mm design and the crop factor you may get away with it easily

Some comments:

1) IR sensitivity affects all kinds of color rendering. The effect on black textiles is only the tip of the iceberg. That said, I sometime choose to shoot color with no filters, knowing full well that I'll be seeing various color shifts.

2) As a rule, the 486 filters are closer in effect, to the Leica filters, than the Heliopans. The difference, however, will be most noticeable with very wide lenses such as the 18 we're discussing.

3) If the 60 doesn't fit with the hood, it's out obviously. I should have a Zeiss 18 for testing in a couple weeks, ditto for the Summarits.

4) The main problem with using a 486 on the Zeiss 18 is that it won't quite match the M8's in-camera corrections (depending on subject lighting, etc.). It should work beautifully with Cornerfix, however.

Cheers,

Sean

How about a step-down filter from 46-43 for the biogon and Planar, will this

fit inside the hood on this lenses...?
