There is an interview with Stephan Schulz on the Amateur Photographer website, where he says that many of the components developed for the S2 can be reused in the development of new models.

Schulz is quoted:

'It has a lot of new technology and this [the S2] will be a platform for future products so we can use nearly everything we have developed for the camera for future cameras in Leica's portfolio.'

Schulz also suggested that there will be an "exciting new product" at next year's Photokina, although you would expect some form of announcement by Leica for the show.

Could be anything.

I kind of believe in the S2 so anything giving us more S2 would be good. I see the Leica R more and more as the screw-mount Leica. What I mean is, it's over. It has to be something new and forward thinking.

What he does mention is:

Focus technology

Processor technology

Image processing technology

So if we add Leica glass and simplicity, we'll be getting somewhere. But I think Leica has startet thinking in market possibilities rather than leaning onto their history. So the question is, where's the market options for Leica technology, quality and prices. S2 being one very good example of such a market where Leica can add value.

A number of dSLR shooters, semi-pro and pro, lusting for the optimum image quality from a silent camera? Maybe that. Or an M10 AF. It really comes down to market research and how many would go from Canon 5D to Leica if there was an offering.

Or video cameras? I don't think anybody produces a video camera that is intuitive to use, and video is definitely a big future market and the resolution and image quality will go up, demanding for better and more movie-like options (with DOF).

In any case, glad to hear they're not planning a holiday after the introduction of the M9, X1 and S2 :D

A Digilux S2 perhaps with super-fast AF and processor, and with a tiny little Kodak sensor powered by Maestro. Could be a winner.

RED Digital Is all over this one.

They would have to compete with them.

Leica will come out with an junior S2. That just makes a whole lot of marketing sense. It won't be an R solution, because Leica will want you to purchase new lenses.

The only problem with that approach is that people weren't buying into the R system even though the lenses were a lot cheaper than the M equivalents. I can't see how a substantial number of people would buy into an 'S2 light' system.

Canikon users. I guess a certain number of them would be interested by a Leica AF solution offered by an equivalent to the 1Ds (and at equivalent price).

Good for R users, in that case we might get an adapter for our lenses.

Andy, most of the R zooms and one or two primes were made in partnership with Japanese manufacturers. Thinking aloud here, Leica can design them and provide the glass and they can be assembled in Japan by someone with the necessary rights to produce the C/N mounts? (I'm not talking about Panasonic style branded lenses). I really don't see any barriers to doing this but it may just be that Leica have no interest in doing so.

The previous argument against it was that it could damage sales of their own SLR cameras but that's not valid anymore. If they're not in the '35mm/FF' D/SLR business anymore there's no reason not to sell famed Leica glass to fit other makes.
