Tragic

All children were killed with an assault rifle. Today someone opened fife in a hospital in Alabama. Last night a man killed a woman and then himself in the lobby of a vegas casino. I can buy an assault rifle easier than I can get a license to drive a truck. Haven't stopped crying for the children's families or who we've become. Peace.

It is a very complex issue. I used to be involved in competitive shooting for many years and still own a couple AR-15's. From my personal knowledge, most AR's are owned by collectors or competitors and these people not only have tremendous knowledge and respect for them, but also practice safety and keep their guns unloaded and locked in a safe that is only accessible by the owners!

Tri,

This is not that "complex." All it takes is ONE of these to kill 20 children. It really doesn't matter that most are under lock and key, in responsible homes. Just look at the statistics and see how many lose their lives every single day to guns. What is the priority here?

In 2007, firearms are involved in 0.5% of deaths nationally, motor vehicles (37%), poisoning (22%), falls (17%), suffocation (5%), drowning (2.9%), fire (2.5%), etc. We need more prosecutions, not control. Are we going to ban household cleaners, meds, swimming pools, stairways, balconies, next? What happened was the fault of the mother not intervening in time and at an earlier age, and her failure to keep her firearms away from her "disturbed" son!

Thanks for the NRA talking points. Not worth getting into. No, we are not going to ban swimming pools or cars or kitchen cleaners, they are not built to KILL.

Your focus is in the wrong place. Blame the mother? What happened is that 20 kids and 6 adults got killed because those guns (with no use other than to KILL) are floating about.

The U.S., with 4.5 percent of the world population, accounts for about 40 percent of the planet's civilian firearms.

Ece,

I realize that we are never going to agree on this. I just feel that a lot of people who are against guns have never owned one, or had a chance to use one in formal competition or informal fun-filled, balloon-popping target shooting. I feel more unsafe driving in Houston with a lot of people texting while driving than around guns at the range, in my safe, or a combination-lock box in my nightstand! BTW, people have been killing people with hands, any weapons for thousands of years. I agree there should be more control, background check, severe and enforced punishment, but not total banning.

the one reaction i wasn't expecting is that, according to an article in The Daily Beast - Cheat Sheet - morning edition, legislators from both parties are preparing legislation to allow arming school staff.

i've been gone too long.

Indeed. In fact, according to the 2011 FBI Uniform Crime Statistics, there were more homicides committed in the state of California with fists and feet than with rifles (including "assault rifles") and shotguns. Kind of puts things in perspective.

I recommend reading this article which has some good numbers on the numbers of AR-15s made and how they're used. Needless to say its the most popular of its kind made.

Between 3-31/2 million made since 1986 that haven't left the United States.

Interestingly the manufacturer hasn't/won't release number of sales, an atty did the research for a case.

Today the NRA presser basically called for more people to buy guns. Stating, 'Only Thing That Stops A Bad Guy With A Gun Is A Good Guy With A Gun'

They also said (comically) this is the beginning of a conversation, there will be no questions.

That statement pretty much sums up the state were in.

arianna huffington noted today that to implement LaPierres idea of arming every school with an armed gov. agent would cost around 18billion a year. Furthermore this is the same group

Whose reason for individuals to be armed is in case we have to take up arms against the government.

The NRA is extremely well funded. They have spend heaps on tiny things, things that if you read don't seem to connect. Like. Florida law limits conversations doctors can have with their patients about guns. NRA (sucessfully) lobbied that that's private info. All the while seems reasonable except that a Psychiatrist is a doctor. And so on.

I for one am currently having difficulty differentiating between the NRA and the Westburo Baptist church.

While I agree you should be allowed by law, to arm yourself I think we are forgetting that when the 2nd amendment was written the most serious weapon was a muscet.

I know it isn't the gun that kills people-oh wait...

But yes it's the people using the guns.

Until we address mental Heath in a different manor imo it's just as insane to have easy access weapons as is the insanity of a mass killer.
