A question for you: Bokeh 50 ?

Here's a question for you: I am looking for a 50mm lens for my M9. I shoot colour and enjoy a contrasty look and especially smooth and creamy bokeh at wide apertures.

Which, of all the 50mm lens out there (be it Leica, Zeiss or CV), would be the lens that you would recommend ? (I don't have enough funds for a Noctilux but can consider just about anything else)

Thanks for your feedback!

Agree : Summilux pre asph; probably (I haven't it) also the new Summarit 2,5. No experience with no-Leica lenses... but if you dream of a Noctilux, why not the CV f 1,1 ? Probably bokeh is not "creamy" as the "old" Summilux but, wow, 1,1 is always 1,1... ;)

There's actually many interesting 50mm Leica lenses. I would say all of them look great in image quality, some distinguish them self.

One very good place to look to see which "look" you like is Flickr.com There would be all of them.

50mm. Summicron-M f/2.0 version I, II, III, IV

50mm Summilux-M f/1.4 version ASPH and non-APH

50mm Noctilux-M f/0.95 and f/1.0 (two versions)

50mm Elmarit-M f/2.8 different versions

50mm Summarit-M f/2.5

If you want contrasty color, new lenses and ASPH is most likely more what you are looking for. But the overall look, that is what is interesting.

Manu forum members here have several 50mm lenses, old/new versions of the same, etc. It's not that easy to find one that is much better than the others. They are all so great (perhaps except the collapsible 50mm, but some prefer even that).

Hmmm, certainly my photos are no great demonstration of bokeh, though I can't find the "grainy" OOF at F/1.4 - left 50-lux pre-asph, right 50-lux asph:

Interestingly Steve Huff talked (reviewed) about the 50cron and I think Overgaardcom even commented this as well :) (fanboy waves)

It's an inexpensive lens, relatively speaking, but without comparing directly to a lux or Noct, it's a lens that you can walk away with a smile, or big grin :D

It is also a small lens and with a discreet lens hood built in, which I haven't been needing to use!

Seriously, it is a good lens, and just about every other lens talked about here, 50s isn't a lens that really has a bad apple (did I start up something?), something you could consider. Bokeh and the like, contrast and colors become subjective! Sorry I can't help with the posting an example at the moment though!

Shh, don't tell anybody how good the 50mm Cron is, it might go up in price ;)

Here's an example of 50mm Cron bokeh at f/2.0 and at ca. 1 meter focus distance:

the 50 lux asph is definitely 'smoother'. there's a consistent colour throughout the blur. also the out of focus part flow into each other smoother. the pre asph has more defined blurrs. it really depends what you like, i like both. if anything, i prefer the pre asph a little more. but that's just me.

thanks overgaardcom for the two comparisons

I posted these pics on another thread, but I'm loving all these 50mm bokeh samples, and I think it may be worth re-posting. M8 50mm 'cron (version 3 or 4 - sorry, I haven't done all my homework on it yet.)

The photos were taken at f/2 (or perhaps 1/2 a click above that - I do miss having the info in the EXIF.)

Alberto - a nice illustration, taken along with Thorsten's table setting, to show that "bokeh" can change a lot with lighting, subject matter, and the relative distances between the main subject and the background - not just the optics.

The 50 'cron is one of those that can vary from "pretty nice" (your mannikin) to "neutral" (your dog) to "pretty cluttered" (That banquet room - IMHO).

Cron 50 latest version @ f4 approx.

Perhaps not a brilliant picture, but a bit of an idea of the oof. area when not in close up.
