New Summarit-M 75 mm f/2.4

Does anyone have any experience of this? I was looking at one in RG Lewis today, and for £1400 I was tempted. Closer focusing (.7m), supplied with a hood and leather case, it felt like a step up from the original Summarit offering. Grateful to hear from anyone currently using. It's a focal length I don't use that often, but I could be interested...

My understanding is that aside from the closer focusing, its basically the same lens. You can pick up a mint f2.5 copy, without hood, for £800, so its up to you to decide whether another £600 is worth it. IMHO, it is not. I have a 75 f2.5 and from the very first shots I lost all interest in a Summicron asph.

Yes, the original 75/F2.5 is excellent (Leica loaned me one a couple of years ago) though the 75 Summicron might be said to have a more interesting (certainly more saturated) "look". (The first copy of the Summicron I owned was also quite prone to veiling flare which wasn't quite the disaster it might have seemed as it lent a softening veil to the underlying brutal contrast and saturation). The shorter minimum focussing distance of the newer version Summarit is very welcome but it's a moot point for me because, try as I might, I can't get on with the 75mm framelines.

Thanks. I've had both lux and cron 75s and they didn't earn their keep. The summarit might just warrant the limited use it will get, so I'm interested to see if there's enough difference to justify the price difference between a used copy of the old model of laying out for the new one.

Try out a nice second hand copy of the Voigtlander 75/2.5 LTM - they can be had for just a few hundred USD in great condition.

They are very well built by any standards (black paint on brass), have an interesting, more vintage look to them, are sharp enough, draw a nice smooth background and best of all are tiny and lightweight to just drop also into the bag.

 

The perfect 75mm to have just to have a 75mm.

 

The 75/2 ASPH is a beauty but I always found it too heavy and cumbersome as the "also in the bag lens" (surely a great lens fr people who see in 75mm - I don't).

 

The 75 Lux is a very different story altogether …

 

Over at RFF there is from time to time the odd 75/2.5 Voigtlander for sale and usually grabbed away fast - they are very well appreciated little lenses.

The original Summarit was great on my M8 (where the focal length was equivalent to 100mm and 90mm was equivalent to 120mm). However, now my M8 has been scrapped by Leica I find there is no room between 50mm and my collection of 85/90mm lenses. I'm tempted to sell the 75mm good though it is.

I agree - the Voigtlander is a great choice if you don't use a 75 a lot. I've been amazed by mine, and as a result use it more than I expected.

Exactly the same for me... but I'm reluctant to sell the Summarit 75 for its size... ny standard 90 is the Elmarit M which is a lot bigger, while Summarit is pocketable...

Chris, for your anticipated low usage of a 75mm, I would definitely go for the original version and think of a better use for the cash saved.

 

When I bought my Summarit for the M8 I was surprised by its usefulness, so kept it through M9 to M-P. Only today I was using it for its slightly increased separation (c.f. 50mm) of a horticultural progress shot on some maintenance work in the garden. Rarely has the shortest focusing distance caught me out. So good is the combination that it would easily handle cropping if needed.

I've owned the Leica 75/1.4, the 75/2, and the 75/2.5. I even owned the Voigtlander 75.

 

The only one I kept was the Leica 75/2.5. I can't speak about the new 75 Summarit, but I can tell you that the "old" 75/2.5 is one of my favourite lenses:

Maybe this informations are useful for some of you guys.

My copy arrived yesterday and so far I like it very much (I will post some pictures done with the lens if I find the time).

 

First picture shows the size of the 75 compared to the Summicron 1:2/50 (V5),

and the second picture shows the complete stuff which is in its package.

There are two front caps (one if the screw-in hood is mounted and one

for the lens without the hood).

For the use with the smaller front cap, there is a protection ring for the thread.

If this ring is srewed on the thread, the front cap (the smaller one for the lens only) fits much better.

What was your impression of the weight when you picked it up?

The person to refer to is Sean Reid who compared the Summarit with the CV 75mm Heliar, and the end result of the test was simply a matter of opinion based on fine details, and of course the price. I have the CV and it is very good, but I haven't used the Summarit.

I am wondering about the image quality at close (0.7 -1m). I had the Summilux 75mm (still regretting that I sold it) and it was quite o.k. in that range if stopped down to 5.6 - of course not like MEM 90mm.

I've owned the Leica 75/1.4, the 75/2, and the 75/2.5. I even owned the Voigtlander 75.

 

The only one I kept was the Leica 75/2.5.

I always liked the 50mm focal length on my M8 and so easily adapted to 75mm on the M. I find 90mm a tad long for general walk about.

 

The CV 75mm 2.5 Color Heliar is a sleeper. Small, light and sharp with good oof. Mr Reid rated highly and at the price (I'm seeing them go for approx £200 UK pounds) astounding.

 

If you only use sparingly or are unsure about the focal length, a wise choice. I have not yet been tempted to "upgrade" to either the Summicron or Summarit - although a Summilux would be nice!

Oh, I didn't know that. Is the close focussing on the M-mount version also 1m or does it focus shorter?

That's what I thought. Thanks Eric. I was about to find myself a closer focussing 75/2.5.

 

The newer 75/1.8 Voigtlander has no appeal to me as of it's size and weight, but I do understand Cosina's strategy there - offering a faster less expensive lens to the Leica Summarit.

I never tried the 75/1.8 Voigtlander though.
