Hi everyone,

My first post after lurking for ages. I thought all the M2's were feeling neglected and couldn't stand for it any longer!

Mine is lovely and with my 35 Sumilux asph. produces lovely results! No need to go digital for me. It is much easier just to get a scan when I need it! In berlin there are some really good labs too...

Cheers and to lovely M2's

The 35 lux asph is great. I've had mine for 4 years now. It's the only leica lense I've had. (unfortunately!) Previously I had a beautiful Contax aria with 25mm (my sample was an incredible specimen! only lens I miss!) 85mm 1.4 and 45 tessar. Different creature I know but I personally get many more keepers per roll from the M2 35 combo. It could also be that my M2 taught me how to get more out of every roll...in any case it has cut down developing costs. Not having a meter taught me ALOT and find that my guess's now are pretty good!

I find that the 35 summi excels in the range up to about 50 metres with closer distances exceptional!

Could be my technique (and if so give me tips!) but infinity is not as strong. I don't know if leica did this on purpose to serve the reportage/low light nature of this lens. I just know that portraits for me on this lens are really amazing/interesting! I do alot of travel and find it perfect for people, travel and 'intimate' landscape.

I love being able to show people my prints. They are lighter than my laptop and more satisfying than the back of a digi. I don't have to do any post processing, that is all done before I take the shot.

The only thing I miss is macro on my M2. I know macro elmar 90!!!

The 35 Lux asph is my main rep and doc. lens.

For landscapes etc. I use the Tri-elmar so I couldn't tell about the infinity quality of the lux.

The lux imho is not the most sharp lens but if performs very well even under the most adverse light circumstances.

No M2 though for me, I couldn't live without my MP's light meter.

But I still think an MP comes closest to the old M's, in built and in handling.

To be honest, I bought the M2 for a number of reasons, one of them being it was the least expensive for the best example. Which enabled me to get the lux! Another reason was because of the frame lines 35 50 90. Third was I could somehow say to myself that it was the closest to the original MP! (which is probably rubbish but the film counter is the same!)

Funny about sharpness of lux...mainly spectacular in my case, like I said at closer distances. But wide expansive landscapes I'd say the summicron COULD be better. I think proper exposure and technique would limit me far more than this lens' critical sharpness would. Could also by my example....new 28's and 24 look better in mtf charts. But yes low light is lovely! I'm only scratching the surface of this lens' abilities there.

alas, mine are in the past tense. this one is a beauty, and i assume it still is. as pretty as this one is, it didn't get used as much as a well worn one that had been around the block, lots of nicks and scrapes and a couple of significant scratches- but it worked flawlessly and the speeds were spot on. i'll look around for a jpeg of the earlier one and attach it later.

My M2 is really my favourite Leica. (But don't tell my MP, my M8 or my Barnack III otherwise they may sulk :p) Here it is :)

Actually, the MP film counter is like the M3's counter in terms of look and operation; not being manually reset like the M2 counter. Other than having the M2 vf window-framing, without the raised framing of the m3, the MP is much like a superduper M3 in appearance.

Hello Thomas,

I'm talking about the first MP not the current one. The information I have found states that the frame counter is similar to the M2 or vise versa and operated manually. The frame lines were that of the M3 as standard but optionally available with the 35 50 90. The internal gearing was the main difference in that it was made form steel for 'longer life'. The windows are indeed the same as M3 and raised. I got this from Hove, which could indeed be wrong!

By the way Keith, absolutely beautiful! you gotta love 'em!

Cheers Stroop

Yes it's been around! LOL. My uncle gave it to me to use in high school,I was a yearbook photographer. That was 1979 and the camera was in better shape:) He was a pro and wanted me to take the best shots I could, preserving some very special memories for my schoolmates. In 4 years of abuse from a teenager it got to look like it does.I live with it in my coat pocket, knapsack etc.and it goes where I go. 25+ years later it's still my #1 camera, and I have a MP and a M3 also but, I guess you never get over your first love!!;)
