Accessories for 50mm f3.5 Elmar

If I were to get a genuine 50mm f 3.5 Elmar for my 1936 III a age-related one would have been uncoated originally.

I figure I would need aperture setting accessory to avoid broken fingernails.

You can get just the ring and a lens hood with the ring. What are the Leitz codes for these accessories? If I get a original uncoated lens the hood is absolutely essential.

The lens hood with ring for f/stop adjustement was named VALOO and then 16620: I think it's not impossible to be found

I do not know the coding for a ring only, and even do not remember if such an item does exist.

The standard hood for the Elmar is the FISON/12510 or the adjustable FIKUS (for 50-90-135 mm). Personally, my Elmar is not so difficult to f/adjust.. never broke a nail...:)

If broken nails are a problem (I don't suffer these from Elmar use!) then take a tip from the guitarists and use nail varnish, clear stuff if you don't want to be too OTT :D

As for the lens, must you have one which actually matches the year of your camera? Many uncoated lenses were later coated so even if you do find a 1936 lens it won't necessarily be uncoated.

I would just advise looking for the best example optically. The later Red Scale lenses are ever so slightly better image wise in terms of contrast and saturation if using colour.

I agree with Luigi. I have the FIKUS but rarely use it. I don't have problems with flare. Aperture setting is not a problem, and I have never chipped my varnish

Can you date the 50mm 3.5 Elmar's by their serial number?

I dunno if I will win this Elmar, but I put down what I thought it was worth to me.

I was attracted by a post-war 50mm f2.8, although it has the virtue of being genuine Leitz it was not quite 'right'. I thought it would be nice to have one piece of glass that was original.

If I feel the need for a faster lens I will have a FSU Jupiter 8 re-shimmed.

The adapter from A 36 to E 39 which you can use for the screw-mount Elmar is the SOOGZ. Though it is not so helpful, for with a filter on top you cannot set the apertures.

The M-mount 3.5/50-Elmar is much more convenient, as it has a normal aperture ring and E-39 mm Filter mount. It is as good as the red-scale screw-mount Elmar, but has no red-scale... Much better than the - old - 2.8/50 M-Mount Elmar, which was considerably less contrasty. The 3.5/50 M-mount Elmar may be found for the same price or even cheaper than the red-scale, for most people look for 2.8 when they want one for the M. But it is much rarer than either the screw mount version or the 2.8 -M-Mount.

If you start with 50mm - Elmars you will be lost in variations...

Edit: Laney (p. 398) writes that the SOOGZ is for Summitar-42-mm filters on 36-mm lenses. My two adapters which are engraved SOOGZ take 39-mm filters but no Summitar-filters.

One of the many typo - errors in Laney... SOOGZ (aka 13154) is definitely for E39 filters - see official Leitz catalogues; SOOTF (13079) is for Summitar filters on A36.

Agree on the observations on BM Elmar 3,5... old SM Elmars are more "classic"... but BM ones are a lot more comfortable in use on M8.

Luigi,

unfortunately I have no official catalogues and - yet - no Lager III either, so i must rely on trial and error.

Do you know if all M-mount 3.5/50-Elmars have black scales, or did Leitz even vary on the engravings for this lens?

For what I have seen... no variations on engravings on the BM Elmar 3,5... only variants for me are the usual feet or meter scale, and the red dot for mounting ref. (painted or plastic bubble); btw, Van Hasbroek illustrates one with an almost incredible s/n of over 4.xxx.xxx ... and with the old "5 cm" engraving !!! Very strange... he doesn't give explanations about.

Luigi, those are likely prototype numbers (at that time s/n of 4.xxx.xxx was so far away no one believed it could ever be reached). With later prototype lenses for R, numbers of 5.xxx.xxx were used.

Thanks, probably is as you say... even if (if I remeber well) Van H. pic is of an item with red bubble.. and this is strange for a prototype of such an "old" lens... about the "Million Numbers"... you quote 5.xxx.xxx for R lenses (I have never "studied" anything on R line :o) : are they "normal look" numbers ? I mean... usually I seem to remember that prototype numbers are "special" (lot of zeros, or something like 12.345.678... ther is something like in M lenses...or bodies) , and Van H. pic is of a BM Elmar with a "trivial" 4.xxx.xxx number.

Thanks for the visual support, JC... meters/feet and paint/bubble in one ! ;) The bubbled one has a higher s/n, as I supposed... a little curios: the left lens seems to have the triangle on the DOF scale UNPAINTED... is it normal or the paint has disappeared accidentally ?

I have it in hand now and seems it never been painted, the numbers, the lines and the R letter are black inlayed. On the bubbled one there is no R letter.

Have you seen these 2.8 BM ?

mtr + ft + mtr/ft... fine ! Don't see which or them are "5cm" and which "50 mm" ... ;)

on eight 2.8/50 Elmar : 2 SM cm, 4 BM cm, 2 BM mm .

The right one has a "19" for the real focus-length next to the meter-mark. I have never seen this on a 50 Elmar.

the last 2 BM mm and dual range wear the same 19.
