ryee3 Posted August 6, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Any comments about this lens: 80mm–200mm f/4 Vario-Elmar-R - Kyocera. It was a Solms design but made in Japan. I heard from recent blogs, that it's a must have zoom. Is their a concensus of those who have this lens? Thanks:)

jaapv Posted August 6, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 6, 2010 An excellent lens. But must-have? Depends on what you need it for. For me it is too short. I use the 105-280, which is from the same design family.
topoxforddoc Posted August 6, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 6, 2010 It's one of Leica's R bargains. Performance wise, it takes many of it's cues from its bigger brother, the 70-180 APO 2.8. It's relatively light, well built, an excellent performer and cheap. If the focal lengths suit and you don't mind the f4 max aperture, then buy it. You won't be disappointed. Best wishes,
stephan_w Posted August 6, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 6, 2010 I use it on a D3x sometimes. It is terrific, sharp and relatively small. The downside is the missing autofocus (I don't miss it elsewhere, but here i do), because it has two rings, one for zooming and one for focussing. As I don't use it frequently, I'm always confused But besides this, it is a stellar lens!

ryee3 Posted February 10, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted February 10, 2011 I received the 80mm–200mm f/4 Vario-Elmar-R lens yesterday and all the previous responders about this lens was correct. A Solms design very much on par with my other German made zooms. It's got the Leica look, very sharp and contrasty and is good as some of my R primes. Thanks to all for their accurate opinions on this lens. A definite "must have lens" in this zoom range especially for the lightweightness and price. It seem to me that all the R lenses are starting to go up again. This was a great purchase for me, Thanks again!!!
