echorec Posted February 26, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, Is there a big difference between the old and new version of this lens? I have the old one and think about getting the new (1990s) version. Thanks,
Advertisement Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Hi echorec, Take a look here Elmar 50/2,8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mark Antony Posted February 26, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2008 I've got the 1950's version, and I've tried (briefly) the new one. I think the new one has much higher contrast especially wide open and is better corrected and possibly sharper especially at apertures below F8 and for close focus. I liked the old one better, it has a gentle handling of tones (can't think how to phase it) but the new one is much more modern more like the 'cron. thomasw_ Posted February 26, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2008 I love my black Elmar-M 50/2,8. It is a stealthy, very compact companion to the Lux 50 asph; somehow it has a more gritty rendering. Sadly it has been discontinued....
lct Posted February 26, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 26, 2008 ...Is there a big difference between the old and new version of this lens?... Yes indeed. The current one is sharper and much more contrasty, has less flare and colours are more saturated. Does not show any 'glow' though.
peter_n Posted February 26, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 26, 2008 The current 50/2.8 is an underrated lens that is very versatile and a great little travel lens. I prefer it to the current Summicron, it has slightly warmer color rendition and is not as clinically sharp, but sharp enough. I also have a 1940's Elmar but rarely use it as this lens is just so versatile. Welcome, dear visitor! peter_n Posted February 26, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 26, 2008 Thanks Ronald. The liitle lens only weighs 170g, next to nothing. As I said, perfect for travel. Actually I have two of them, silver chrome & black. Ridiculous really to have two identical lenses so I'll probably sell the silver one. I don't understand why Leica has decided to stop manufacturing a lens that goes way back to the beginnings of the company. Very sad...

Rona!d Posted February 26, 2008 Share #10 Posted February 26, 2008 I think, it´s because of the new 2.5/50. And the Elmar-M needs some patience when it get´s older. At my 10 years old one they changed the helical mount, now it´s like new.
andym911 Posted February 26, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 26, 2008 There is a big difference with the two. On the photo forum (people)you can see one of my shots called Elmar in the Woods which shows the old version used on an M8. The desaturated color is however post processing, not the lens although it is less saturated and lower contrast then the current one. I use the current version for most shots however as the ergonomics are better...my favourite lens is indeed the current version. regards andy

I wish there was a a way to have a focusing tab retrofitted on the Elmar-M... - Carl

cbretteville Posted February 26, 2008 Share #14 Posted February 26, 2008 Modern design with tab: Yes, I'm aware of the M6J variant. I was thinking of those of us that don't have access to one of the 1640 made like yours....
andym911 Posted February 26, 2008 Share #15 Posted February 26, 2008 the focus ring poses no problems as far as accurate fine focussing is concerned. andy
peter_n Posted February 26, 2008 Share #16 Posted February 26, 2008 I wish there was a a way to have a focusing tab retrofitted on the Elmar-M...If there was a tab on that lens I wouldn't have it. Those tabs drive me nuts. I go back & forth over selling my rigid Summicron over it.
lct Posted February 26, 2008 Share #17 Posted February 26, 2008 Elmar's 50/2.8 from 1962 & 1996. Which's which? (Epson R-D1, 200 iso, f/2.8)
echorec Posted February 26, 2008 Author Share #18 Posted February 26, 2008 Thanks everyone for the replies and beautiful pictures, much appreciated. lct - those two shots look quite similar but my guess would be that the first is the old one. lct Posted February 27, 2008 Share #19 Posted February 27, 2008 Depends on the monitor of course. Difference is obvious on my Apple Studio monitor but less visible on an iMac G3.
