Arguably the most economical Leica of all is the tiny Leica Mini 3 with fixed 32mm lens. No manual control possible but very compact, simple to use and definitely point and shoot.

Also look out for the Mini 2 which has a 35mm lens.

Hi Daivd,

Thanks for your prompt response. I googled Leica Mini and it came out the Leica Mini for M3. Thus the confusion.

Thanks also for your link. It is very informative. The Minilux does seems to be a viable choice. Wonder if there would be any E02 errors...

Sadly, I think that you may have to assume that you will have an E02 error eventually. I had a Minilux that had behaved perfectly, then last year I got an E02. That was a pity as the lens on the Minilux was fantastic.

Its replacement the CM would probably be a better bet, but at a higher cost of course.

EO2 error is a real risk. The little minis are plasticky (and therefore very light and cheap) but the fixed lens is real glass and very sharp. CM may be another choice.

These two from a trip to Italy a couple of years ago, on slide film (E100G). More keepers with the M6, but Mini 3 proved a handy backup.

In response to David I have a late model minilux and yes the lens is great, I find it difficult to see much difference with 35f2asph lens shots. The only time I got some error codes was when the battery died and the lens would not retract. The battery meter shows full most of the time until you only have enough juice for 1 or 2 shots then it shows 2/3 battery. At that point you should change the battery. I was trying to be clever and go out without the case I normally use, with a spare battery in the bottom, just to travel light. So I did not get any shots of a summer evenings medieval jousting. Putting in a new battery the next day and I was back to working fine. These modern batteries are designed to provide full voltage right up to the end then die which makes it difficult for a battery meter unless it can measure and record the mAhours of use, which I don't think anybody does yet.

The viewfinder on Minilux is 0.3x so your subject looks like it is very far away and you can't see peoples faces when in a group. Also the coverage area is 80%, oh I do hate it when camera makers do that. 95% OK but 80%, no. It means for slides you look like you can't compose your shots correctly. 80% coverage is designed for drunk teenagers taking shots of friends who would normally miss off heads or feet so the extra 20% on the film gives that back.

May I suggest a Voightlander R2A with the auto exposure so you can put some good M glass on the front. The body is about 440g and sort of smaller in some directions than M7. Although not a total P&S the auto exposure should help. If you don't want to use a 35mm lens then the R3A has a 1x viewfinder. The rangefinders have a smaller base than Leica Ms but for 35mm or 50mm DOF should help out. I can't comment on the Voightlander lenses though so I'd recommend a 50f2.8 collapsable as a very high quality lens that is light and around £500. For £1000 /$1500 you could have an R2A+50mmf2p8 but a that might be too much?

I bought a black M7 as a pseudo P&S and do prefer to use it instead of my fully working minilux titaniam in mint- condition. Which country do you live in JustShot? I've thought about selling the minilux but the last new ones were selling for £250 (GBP) so I don't know what a used one would go for £200 at most, perhaps? I paid over £500 for it back in 2002. I must have only run about 15-20 films through it at most. But I do use it on occasional trips abroad when I don't want to take the Ms and the results on Velvia are spot on.

You should let us know your budget for a P&S. The C3 28-80mm might be an option if you like slow shutter speeds (1/330s max) and only want to spend £100. I started with Leicas on a minizoom 35-70mm, and while it was in for a light leak repair I bought an M6TTL + 50mmF2 for 10x the price of the minizoom back in 2001. I part-ex the minizoom for the Minilux in 2002 so I had a better lens /camera for a holiday in Tobago. I should have taken more film and Velvia but I didnot know about velvia at that time.

Actually for a cheap pocket camera the minizoom or ZX2 (should be some green Jaguar ones around still) is one you can take anywhere although more bulky than most.

If you want to stray over to the otherside then the Carl Zeiss T3 is a compact 35mm camera with a bigger viewfinder and good optics. I had a Yashica T5 with f3.5 35mm Carl zeiss lens that gave very good service for 5 years until being passed over for digital compacts with zoom lens and instant pictures ( not necessarily better optics though even from Panasonic Leica lenses).

Ok, the Minilux is prone to the shutter error, but it is still relatively cheap on the used market. The CM is great, and I use one, but it cannot be repaired by Leica at all and is, outside of the Ricoh GR21, the most expensive P&S I can think of. Keep that in mind. I believe the Minilux can still be repaired by Leica.

Thanks Stunsworth. I saw the CM and it's indeed very nice. Agreed it is a little pricy

I own the Minilux, Mini, and the Olympus Stylus Epic (35/2.8 and All-Weather). I recommend the Oympus. Small, cheap, and good pics. I found the Minilux lens not wide (40mm) enough plus they're pricey and the EO2 is always hanging over you.

Seconded, and I have had a CM, as well as an XA and a Contax T2. The Mju-II, as it is called in the Free World, is a belter. The only issue is the overenthusiastic flash, that defaults to on every time. Remember that it also has spotmetering too!

Your only real option is a CM. The earlier Mini's were pretty basic and cheap cameras, probably OK quality-wise but the CM (like the Minilux) had a real Leica lens. The CM is probably more reliable than the Minilux.

Thanks earleygallery. I was looking at the CM as well, but the price pulls me back:mad:

Thanks David for sharing your pictures. They looked great.

I am looking for something that lasts, thus if the E02 is going to happen, and will happen, I would give it a miss :(

Hi Lincoln,

Thanks for your detailed response. I lived in Singapore.

I will take your offer into consideration but at this moment, I am really concern on the E02 errors.

I am looking for a P&S camera, so a rangefinder is not what I am looking for :)
