VSOP Posted August 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) 1. Which ND filter(s) I could use on 35mm Summilux when screw-mount hood is attached, is there any limitations with this or could I use every 46mm filters out there (Hoya, B+H, Heliopan etc.) ? 2. Is there noticeable difference between these filter brands? Official Leica technical data says only this... Filter mount/Lens hood: Internal thread for screw-on filters size E46, non-rotating / Snap-on type (supplied)
Advertisement Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Hi VSOP, Take a look here New 35mm f1.4 summilux filter question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lars_bergquist Posted August 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 8, 2010 My experience is that B+W filters have rims that are a hair too wide to allow the hood to slip over them. I don't know about other brands except Leica, which of course fit. I may add that the lens is very well protected by the hood and its front cap. The filter does in effect reduce the depth of the hood, making it less efficient. I am considering using this lens without a filter. hoppyman Posted August 9, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 9, 2010 (edited) Now that is interesting from Lars. Since I just got the new Summilux 35 I just tried this. Adding a B+W F-Pro 46 010 UV-haze (not a slim-line) does indeed make it impossible to fit the supplied lens hood. The same filter works on the Elmar 24 with its supplied hood. I just discovered that the model number on the hoods has changed although the filter sizes are both 46 and the external hood threads are the same pitch and diameter. The Elmar 24 has #12464 and the Summilux 35 has #12465. Although the thread sizes are the same, for my examples at least they are not interchangeable. On mine the earler hood is loose when fully rotated onto the 35. The other way works OK. The 35 model is actually a few (measured) thousandths of an inch shallower front to back. I thought that Leica Camera was trying to standardise some of these parts but there's a subtle difference here at least. Each supplied hood is fine on its original lens but only the 24 model allows me to fit the same B+W filter. I'll talk to my friendly B+W importer. Addendum. I just tried a Leica branded UV/IR E46 and it fits inside the hood with no problems (yes I know it is not suitable for the M9) but it will work for M8 owners in this instance. wmtupas Posted August 9, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 9, 2010 Addendum. Sorry about my ignorance, but could you please explain what you meant with "not suitable for the M9." I own that filter and it's fitted on my 50 Lux and 28 Cron. Thanks. hoppyman Posted August 9, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 9, 2010 Will, the only Leica branded filter that I own is a UV/IR filter (the pink looking one) left over from my M8. That is the one that corrects the over sensitivity to InfraRed light that the M8 sensor proved to have. You do not want or need that InfraRed filter on an M9 because it may cause a colour cast in your images. On the M8 it was needed and the camera compensated for the pinkish colour as part of the image processing. Lars has told us that all of the other Leica branded filters that he has do fit fine. So if you want a filter primarily for protection on the front of your lens you want a clear filter, (usually a UV filter).
250swb Posted August 9, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So.....instead of trying to find a Leica ND filter VSOP, the B&W brand is the best and easiest to get imo. Probably a three stop if you already have a film M (because of the slower maximum shutter speeds), or two for the M9. I'd go for three. hoppyman Posted August 9, 2010 Share #8 Posted August 9, 2010 However the B+W brand will not fit inside the lens hood for that lens, which was what the OP asked in the first place and what all of the other posts are about. Someone may report that other brands do fit as well as the Leica branded ones.

VSOP Posted August 9, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted August 9, 2010 (edited) Thank you all, so I have to find the Leica branded ND filter (E46), but is there such a filter? I've checked from Leica importer (Finland), but there isn't ND filters, only UV/IR and UVa filters. Edited August 9, 2010 by VSOP
