adan Posted October 15, 2009 Share #41 Posted October 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) 5(A) Rational Anarchist - I choose the equipment I want to use based on how the functional characteristics match my shooting style and preferences. Which are: digital, extremely manual, small, quiet, low impact, consistent ergonomics, and requiring the minimum of fuss and "back of the garage" hot-rod building to get up and running. In terms of what I actually use, practically, that comes out as a 2 or a 3. Either Leica is the sole supplier, or I stick with Leica for consistent ergonomics or because I already own it and don't have time to be chasing after every new gizmo. Advertisement Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Hi adan, Take a look here Which One are You?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rob_w Posted October 15, 2009 Share #42 Posted October 15, 2009 i'll own up to being a straight #2. Can't see the point of using non-Leica lenses, for example. When I have paid all that money, why compromsie at the finish line? And don't like the feel of them when I do try them out - regardless of the IQ - I just feel uncomfortable about them. I don't know if it is religious behaviour, however. It feels something more like obsessive-compulsive disorder. If something is not perfect (='Leica') it niggles at me until I correct it by installing or using the Leica accessory. Now I do have Ricoh and Canon cameras as well, but being obsessive, I am usually disappointed by the results and wish I had used my Leica instead. Put another way, I am surprised and delighted when they take a picture which does not disappoint me! Only exception is a non-Leica camera bag (Billingham Hadley) otherwise I would be a #1. Cheers Wilfredo Fun thread!
gberger Posted October 15, 2009 Share #43 Posted October 15, 2009 I'm a 4, but a "film only" and 90% 'chromes. As a friend of mine signs his mail: "Digital Photography is like shaved legs on a man - very smooth and clean but there is something acutely disconcerting about it." lct Posted October 15, 2009 Share #44 Posted October 15, 2009 ...Digital Photography is like shaved legs on a man... Haha! Funny and film grain makes me think of beard-women i don't know why.
wilfredo Posted October 15, 2009 Author Share #45 Posted October 15, 2009 The multiple manifestations of Leica use and the motivation for these are truly fascinating. I approached this from the religious perspective but perhaps we should look at it from the psychoanalytic perspective as well? I'm sure Freud would have something to say about pancake lenses vs. telephoto lenses. LOL
Doc Henry Posted October 16, 2009 Share #46 Posted October 16, 2009 After several years of Leica forum participation I've come to realize that there are several categories of Leica religionists on this forum. Which One Are You?1. Orthodox Leica of the Strict Observance** . This level of Leica religion does not allow any use of photographic equipment that is not strictly Leica including such items but not limited to lens filters, cable releases, camera cases, etc. Good question Wilfredo, ** It's me since 1969 it does make me younger as a Leica religionist
adan Posted October 18, 2009 Share #47 Posted October 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wilfredo, see if you can figure this one out For years I happily shot Nikon Fs and FMs and Nikon lenses (never 3rd-party), but my camera straps and tripod had to be "LEITZ" (Leitz owned Tilt-all for a stretch between 1975 and 1985, and the R4/M6 original straps were the nicest ones I've ever used - still use them on the M9 instead of the nylon thongs included today). kenneth Posted October 18, 2009 Share #48 Posted October 18, 2009 After several years of Leica forum participation I've come to realize that there are several categories of Leica religionists on this forum. Which One Are You? 1. Orthodox Leica of the Strict Observance. This level of Leica religion does not allow any use of photographic equipment that is not strictly Leica including such items but not limited to lens filters, cable releases, camera cases, etc. 2. Orthodox Leica. This level of Leica religion adheres to the observance of Leica lenses and cameras only, everything else (i.e. a Luigi half case) is permitted, but must be in good taste. 3. Conservative Leica. This level of Leica religion allows for the use of mixed equipment, i.e. a Leica Camera attached to a Zeiss lens, and vice a versa. Although the Reformed category is more lax, it maintains a commitment to the use of Leica gear in one form or another, every photo taken must have some direct connection to the use of some form of Leica gear. 4. Reformed Leica. This level of Leica worship makes every effort to involve some form of Leica equipment in every photograph taken but if none is available, the adherents of this practice will not be cast into the shadows where the light for photography does not reach.. 5. Humanist Agnostic Leica. This level of Leica philosophy (they repudiate the use of the word religion) leans toward the use of Leica gear but will mix and match equipment with no regard to purity codes at all. They believe Leica gear might be best, but maybe not. 6. Atheist Leica. This category of Leica user will use Leica gear if available to them but don't really believe there is such a thing as a true Leica (since so many parts in Leica gear these days come from other companies) therefore they don't really care what they use as long as they get the shot. This is an interesting post Wilfredo and even more so when you aline it with religion. I am assuming by using the word religion that you are referring to some faith based form of belief system such as, say Christianity or Islam?. As a practicing Buddhist for a quarter of a century I guess that would aline me up with category 6- Atheist, which I would be comfortable with but that would not be the category I would select as a Leica user. I will need to give this more thought if I am to comment with conviction but an interesting post anyhow.

The use of those straps were a prophetic sign of things to come. It looks like you were pre-destined for Leica, that's what a Presbyterian would say :-)

redbaron Posted October 20, 2009 Share #52 Posted October 20, 2009 OK, I admit it. I'm a 2, but that Domke gripper strap is just so good! If it wasn't for that strap I'd be OLSO. I thought I was just a luddite, control freak!

I used to quite like those lovely straps Nikon supplied with the F3HP which I had in fact I might try and find a couple for my M6"s. They were sort of aubergine coloured and did not have Nikon plasted all over them. In fact I like the Leica M strap for the same reason but I would be interested to see one of thier leather ones. They sound quite nice if not ridiculously expensive

kenneth Posted October 20, 2009 Share #55 Posted October 20, 2009 Wilfredo, I re read the levels of Leica user adherence that you mentioned in your original post again and I am not sure I qualify in any of them. Yes I use Leica equipment exclusively but at an amateur level only. I used to use Nikon cameras exclusively. And we use Siemens washing machines exclusively. I guess it is more to do with perceived brand quality as opposed to brand loyalty. I have not allegiance or loyalty to Leica they are just another manufacturer with a good reputation for doing what they do rather well. What the future holds for them is uncertain as they seem to be a company of an age when longevity ruled unlike today when a product is obsolete before you get it out of the store. wilfredo Posted October 20, 2009 Author Share #56 Posted October 20, 2009 Kenneth, Sounds like you are Leica Orthodox (2) I agree but perhaps not for long. It looks like the winds of reformation are blowing in your direction :-)
sabears Posted October 20, 2009 Share #57 Posted October 20, 2009 Great Wilfredo,I'll give my contribute. This level: (call it as you want, may be 8 ?) The Knights of the Reddot order . They wander from land to land ,searching the ultimate rarity, the prototypes, they try to find the Wetzlar Graal. They never use any Leica equipment, they try only to preserve it from the digital-silicon-evil . You can recognize them from a very small L seal under the right feet. I have to admit bros,I belong to them cheers
