JeffreyTotaro Posted October 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) So why no A la Carte for the digital cameras? I wonder if Leica thinks the M9 will be around for a little while longer than the M8 and maybe they will offer a la carte options. I'd like a cleaner look with no badging (red dot/M9) and maybe a different leather cover or at least the option to pick vulcanite for the gray paint version. Choose a sapphire LCD cover or traditional Leica engraving for the top deck. Doesn't seem all that difficult. You can get an M7 with no badging and MP-like controls, so why not an M9? Does anyone know why they have not offered these options or if they will.
Advertisement Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Hi JeffreyTotaro, Take a look here A la Carte?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Melampus Posted October 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 10, 2009 I was told by the Leica folks in the new London Leica Shop about three weeks ago, that a-la-carte for the M9 would come in Nov-Dec. Cheers, -Peter

JeffreyTotaro Posted October 10, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted October 10, 2009 Wow, thats great news! Worth waiting for especially considering we may not see much stock before then anyway. Thanks Peter.
Melampus Posted October 10, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 10, 2009 It might be nice to take care of the current backlog before they start taking special orders. Rocky I agree, but I only report what I was told. I asked if I the vulcanite would be available on the steel gray camera. And the Leica chap told me, "yes when the a-la-carte program comes in Nov-Dec." I asked if it would be full scale a-la-carte, like for the M7/MP and he confirmed this. Since he works in a official Leica Shop, I'm assuming he know what he is talking about. Cheers, -Peter
JeffreyTotaro Posted October 10, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted October 10, 2009 One part I overlooked from the a la carte program would be the viewfinder mag choice. I wear glasses so a .58 might be nice, and then add a 1.4x for the 75mm lens. I wonder if they will offer silver chrome or just the gray paint. wlaidlaw Posted October 10, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would like an original style Leica engraving on the top plate, like my IIF and M4 have. I think the top plate looks rather bland and "nude" without it. Wilson
lars_bergquist Posted October 10, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 10, 2009 My esthetic paragon is a silver chrome MP! I was really relieved when the white 'M8' paint spontaneously started to fall off my black chrome camera, so I could remove it totally. The red dot I do not really mind, however. wattsy Posted October 10, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 10, 2009 Since he works in a official Leica Shop, I'm assuming he know what he is talking about. I was told the same thing by the same source but I wouldn't assume that the staff there know what they are talking about (I'd also say the same thing about their employers at Milton Keynes). eleskin Posted October 10, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 10, 2009 I am glad I am waiting until next year to buy one (Money, taxes, teething pains of the new camera until it has been in production for a time are the reasons for me). As production numbers increase, prices may come down, and this extra option could become attractive. I would hope Leica gives us our chrome back, and of corse, I would love the Leica script engraved on top without the M9 letters on the front, kind of like the classic M3/M2 look. With the new top plate design, this would really look beautiful. I figure, for $7,000, we should get what we want. Unfortunately, Mercedes will not give me what I want here in the USA despite a large price tag (I want a new E class Turbo Diesel Wagon, and they will not sell it here -these things get over 40MPG!!!), so Leica may not give us the chrome! UliWer Posted October 10, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 10, 2009 I shouldn't be too optimistic that we might see an "á la carte" option of the M9 soon - especially not for an attractive price. The demand for the M9 is very high at present and Leica's production capacity seems to be at it's limit. If this goes on we should rather exspect a significant price increase. This may be concealed by offering a "deluxe" version with extra options similar to "á la carte", but we certainly will have to pay high for it. I'm inclined to agree with you - at the moment they'll be trying to get as many as possible out of the door. I can't imagine them starting an a la Carte version until they've fulfilled all the initial demand. Leica don't have a history of reducing prices later on!
