espressogeek Posted November 27, 2006 Share #161 Posted November 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is correct that M8 comes, as planned, without the AA filter, but in there Leica M System brochure says:“Instead, any moiré patterns are eliminated by the camera’s signal processor” I'm getting Moire artifacts all of the time. And the stupid in camera processor isn't doing squat. Anyone care to tell me how to fix this or if Leica will fix it?
Advertisement Posted November 27, 2006 Posted November 27, 2006 Hi espressogeek, Take a look here Announcement Published on Leica Website . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
blakley Posted November 27, 2006 Share #162 Posted November 27, 2006 I haven't seen any moire at all. Are you shooting JPG Basic? Can you post an example?
fotografr Posted November 27, 2006 Share #163 Posted November 27, 2006 I have no problem using filters to get rid of the magenta. However, the way I read the official statement, in order to qualify for two free filters, you must purchase and register your camera by December 6, 2006. If this is true, I may tell them to sit on their M8 and spin. I've been on a waiting list for the M8 for nearly 5 months. Unfortunately, I was #2 on the list for a black body, so never got a camera before they cut off delivery. That was their fault--not mine. I've been pretty patient waiting for the problems to be fixed and deliveries to resume, but this just might be the deal breaker for me. Since filters were never part of the original requirements to get acceptable results for the camera, I strongly feel the two free filters should be offered with every M8 sold--period! Not just those sold by December 6th. Are you hearing this, Leica? You're about to lose another sale.

Anyone care to tell me how to fix this or if Leica will fix it? I've seen some moire, particularly in lighter colored hair in head shots. I also use a Phase One P25 that also exhibits moire in certain situations. However, the moire is easily eliminated in post. Capture One Pro has a moire removal filter that you have option of loading into Photoshop. Once its loaded, call up the select the area with moire, call-up the filter and eliminate. Good News is it works very well; bad news is only works in 8bit.
Peter41951 Posted November 27, 2006 Share #165 Posted November 27, 2006 I have no problem using filters to get rid of the magenta. However, the way I read the official statement, in order to qualify for two free filters, you must purchase and register your camera by December 6, 2006. From Leica AG: Leica Camera AG offers every LEICA M8 customer a basic kit of two UV/IR filters with diameters of her/his choice and free of charge. Delivery will commence as of early February 2007. In order to receive the two free IR/UV filters, please register yourself as of December 6th, 2006, including your name and address as well as the camera's serial number. After your registration you can order two filters of choice which will be delivered to your address. Additional filters will be available from your Leica dealer. I understand from this that you need to register from 6 Dec, and that two filters come as part of the kit and will do so for the forseeable future. i.e. You can buy in July 2007 if that's what you plan. Perhaps someone else can clarify.

Not just those sold by December 6th. Are you hearing this, Leica? You're about to lose another sale. I hope Peter doesn't mind me trying to clarify his clarification. As far as I can tell, December 6 is the starting date for registration, not the cut off date. Leica won't even have the registration system up and running until December 6. The free filter offer persists indefinitely.

You're right, Leica needs to deliver a complete, workable package for all M8 buyers. The December 6th deadline (this is for returns and getting the filters) will cut off most of us -- it's causing me to get cold feet, too. (I've had a camera on order for two months.) Let's hope this is simply a misstatement in the document. Larry
ho_co Posted November 27, 2006 Share #168 Posted November 27, 2006 Mark-- A few posts back, you spoke of a certain 'Schadenfreude' over the M8's introduction. Considering its apparently pretty impressive dynamic range as mentioned in several other threads, perhaps you should mention also its "Schattenfreude"? --HC

I am in similar position (ie #2 on waitlist for black body etc, order placed 6 months ago) and agree verbatim with your comments. but are you sure this is what they mean? admittedly, it does read that way. I am hoping this is simply one of those glitches that occur when translating from one language to another. One person has mentioned his belief that December 6th is the starting date for registration. Even if two filters come free, I'd still have to buy four more, so it's getting to be kind of a large, unexpected outlay.
johnbuckley Posted November 27, 2006 Share #172 Posted November 27, 2006 Brent - if you go to the Leica website, you will find there is no place to register yet. The use of the words "as of" seems to mean "beginning on" December 6th. JB

Perhaps this is banding and not stair stepping or moire. I have some red colored more artifacts in water droplets I will post when I get home. mike prevette Posted November 28, 2006 Share #174 Posted November 28, 2006 What are you shoting with? a coke bottle? I have seen no moire yet in the 500 shots I've taken so far. And I always thought "as of" meant "by" and not "from". I have found this type of confusion in a few of the international forums. The translations are proper, but not as we typically use them. For example, Erwin Puts would say one lens had twice the volume of another, rather than just saying one lens is twice as big as the other.
blakley Posted November 28, 2006 Share #179 Posted November 28, 2006 If you're referring to the blue fringes around the space bar, this is either color fringing or chromatic aberration. Try a different lens & see if goes away.

The translations are proper, but not as we typically use them. For example, Erwin Puts would say one lens had twice the volume of another, rather than just saying one lens is twice as big as the other. Language usage changes with time; 'as of' may have been more common during the Victorian era. The lack of use today seems to have confused many. It is a good idea to say things as plainly and clearly as possible on the internet to avoid confusion. However, I have seen far larger diction issues on this forum and elsewhere ;-> Tom
