robert_parker Posted November 23, 2006 Share #23 Posted November 23, 2006 In the diary it goes, subject to my working imitation...hope I can make it !! On the subject of choosing venues, choosing on the day by vote sounds a great idea but it is a little unfair to keen forum members who couldn't make it on the day - maybe it would be a better procedure to collect the suggestions on a thread, as this time, then invite a vote over say a week to determine the venue. I agree with Bill that the venue should be on the routes of the cheap airlines and maybe even no more than one change of plane away, for people coming in from distance such as (hopefully) Erl and members from the US. Maybe we should do the major (perhaps capital) cities first, on the basis that they may capture the imagination and whilst Brighton, Liverpool, Goslar, Strasbourg etc. have real attractrions, they may prove harder to get to and not get the response from a more general audience. Liverpool is most definitely in a different country to London. Thank goodness.
stunsworth Posted November 25, 2006 Share #28 Posted November 25, 2006 As someone who works during the week in North London, I can only say 'amen' to that. Why anyone would chose to live her is beyond me, central London I can understand, but 20 km out??? :-)

Michael-IIIf Posted November 25, 2006 Share #30 Posted November 25, 2006 Why anyone would chose to live her is beyond me, central London I can understand, but 20 km out??? :-) Totally agreed. All the bad things about London: high property prices, massive traffic congestion, with none of the good: galleries, restaurants, music, specialist shops. Where are they sending you Steve? stunsworth Posted November 25, 2006 Share #31 Posted November 25, 2006 Michael, I work in Wembley and the hotel I stay in is in Harrow. That's about 5 miles away. The journey can take me anything from 30-50 minutes. Your message summed up my feelings exactly, all the hassle, none of the benifits.
andybarton Posted November 25, 2006 Author Share #32 Posted November 25, 2006 Are there no hotels in Wembley? Just a thought
stunsworth Posted November 25, 2006 Share #33 Posted November 25, 2006 There's a Travel Lodge at the bottom of the road, but it's £10 a night more than where I'm staying, the hotel food is terrible, and there are _no_ amenities nearby. Plus there's a police notice in reception saying that it's a high car crime area - I've had my car broken into and there's a certain amount of windscreen glass in the car park :-( You have to remember that because I'm a contracter at the place I'm working I have to pay my own hotel costs - so price is an important consideration :-)
earleygallery Posted November 25, 2006 Share #34 Posted November 25, 2006 As someone who works during the week in North London, I can only say 'amen' to that. Why anyone would chose to live her is beyond me, central London I can understand, but 20 km out??? :-) Well, I live about 7miles south of the city. I can afford a good size 2 bed flat with garage and garden here, the price for which I'd be lucky to get a studio flat anywhere central. I work in the city and can be in the middle of London within half an hour of leaving my front door. I'm a 10 min drive from the countryside, or 30 mins from the airport. I'd love to live in a nice part of central London but I can't fit into a shoebox!

stunsworth Posted February 22, 2007 Share #40 Posted February 22, 2007 One of the things I liked about living in Paris was that a lot of people still live right in the very centre. There are areas that are more expensive than others of course, but I had a one bedroomed, 40 sq metre furnished flat opposite the Louvre and it cost about £600 a month.
