Buying M9 and keeping M8

After using my M9 for two weeks I decided to unpack my stashed M8. I was really staggered when I released the shutter of my M8 after two weeks. Now I realize how much I became accustomed to the silent M9 shutter. Although I didn't like the idea of a painted M9 instead of black chrome, I have to admit that the painted M9 has a much smoother touch.

I'm also very certain that I'll keep my M8 for these reasons:

- I don't want to sell my M8 below value after the M9 came into the market

- I'll need a backup camera

- I find the M8 with the faster shutter and the black chrome very unique

- I became emotionally attached to my M8 after using it almost every day for three years

Anybody else keeping or selling his/her M8 ?

Regards

I'm keeping my upgraded M8 for several of the same reasons as you. It's an extremely practical backup camera, since it is uses all the same lenses, albeit it with filters. I had just used it over the weekend before my M9 arrived, and I knew it was soon to arrive. It made using the M8 somewhat bittersweet. An M8 is a great camera, and I'm glad I have it in my bag.

Unfortunately for me, despite the "hit" I may take in selling my M8, the money will really be needed to get the M9.

One question: besides the feel of the shutter, what other objective or emotional differences do you get with the M9 vs. M8?

I've kept my upgraded M8 as well. It's a good camera and I'd be crazy to sell considering the cost of the upgrades. It's a backup and gives me some alternate (effective) focal lengths with frame lines and without having to crop the M9. It's shutter is also quieter than the M9's.

I have 2 M8 "classics". Will keep at least one for reasons mentioned by others but also because I like having 24mm framelines on an M body. I may leave my chrome 24/2.8 asph glued to my chrome M8. I may keep my black M8 just to have an M body with an 1/8000 shutter for the situations I want/need it. To compensate for not raising funds by selling them, I may just wait a year for a used M9. I'm having enough fun with the M8s and get my full frame fix from my M7.

The technical differences like 18MP and FF are known adequately. To be honest, if I wouldn't know about FF I'd never ask for it with the M8. I don't make better photos with less crop and more pixels. But my lenses received new values and characteristics, which is nice. Impartial, with the new ISO processing, you gain two more f stops.

I'm leaning the same way when I finally (and definitely) buy an M9. I just cannot see throwing away a "value" of say $2000 by selling a $4500 camera for less than $3000. It's still as good as new, after all. I've even considered giving it to my son to use and keep, as long as it's still available as a backup. Of course, those who keep them--and I cannot part with my M6 either--clearly have enough capital/disposable income to invest in more than one Leica RF at a time.

Well, common sense dictates that I sell one of my two M8's now that I have an M9, but, I now have six M cameras and numerous other cameras that I cannot part with. Serious guilt setting in. All wonderful cameras but slowly sinking into disuse. Can't convince my children to use them, so now I will seriously attempt to 'up sell' them to my grandchildren. Maybe I should open the darkroom again!

Nope. I already sold both of mine, which is a problem since I thought my M9s would come in faster.

It's a great camera and makes sense to keep as a backup, but I don't feel like fiddling with filters. Keeping it for the 24mm framelines doesn't make sense to me since the 24 is not really a 24 on the M8, it's a 32mm. And the M9 has both 35 and 28mm framelines.

I'm so excited to be able to go back to my standard 28/35/50 kit, and I look forward to putting cropped sensors behind me forever.

Mostly, I needed the cash for the M9s. Now I have the cash, and all I need are the M9s:confused:
