i sent my 2 bodies (M8s) and all my lenses to DAG.

my nocti is softish.

DAG adjusted my cameras and tested my lenses as well.

when i asked him about my nocti he said...

I'ver seen other Noct. lenses perform better than yours & also many that performed as good as yours. Right now your lens is focusing acurately at the setting that you focus on, however, the lens is not all that sharp at it's perfect focus & there's nothing that one can do about that.

from this i realized that perhaps all noctis are not the same. btw my is older than the newest version, but not that old!

anyway that they might be different means that ea. photog has the opportunity to apply his signature when using the lens.

im just sayin...

id like to add that if any of you need any work done on your gear that is in DAGs range of repair/clean use him. he is awesome. i cant praise him highly enough.

best, melissa

I completely agree. Don optimized my Noctilux for shooting wide open, but he also told me he is always surprised that a lens that expensive was so soft wide open.

Very interesting thread. I would love to see more images taken with the Noct both new and old. film/digital.

I am the happy owner since 6 years of a 30+ years old Nocti. I am not tempted at all by the new 0.95, nor by the FF M9 which doesn’t have 1/8 000 s (couldn’t afford them anyway for my amateur use).

If I go on a trip with only one lens, it’s with the Nocti. With 2 lenses, I add the 24 mm Elmarit Asph but in fact barely use it 5-10% of the time.

Here is one photo with my former M6TTL @ f:1 (my avatar):

With M8 @ f/& & 1/8 000 s (yes the Nocti fully open is fun in daylight also)

And all the following threads are with my Nocti on the M8:

He did the same for me as for you and Melissa. Mine is an E58 and I also sent him the 0.85x mag body that the lens is used on and he did a wonderful job including a CLA. It took ages to get the lens & camera back but the wait was worth it. :)

Thanks for posting those. I feel 90% of those images could have been shot with any other 50mm lens, only few where I would think f1.0 would be needed or f1.0 would be seen when looking at the image.

That’s precisely the idea: I use the Nocti 24/7. No need for yet another 50 mm lens.

makes sense IMO. A lens where you have it when you need it but which can be used for everything else as well.

Now if it was half the price I might be interested. But is just too much$$ (for me) for those few times where f1.4 doesnt work.

Personally I would rather give up a little "character" of the old Noctilux but therfore have consistent focus and an allround usable lens. But thats me and I can see how others have a different preference.

Would you mind to post some more f0.95 images?

You know Lars, I do find your "The old man from the age..." lines rather amusing.

Whenever you post, it's the first part of your post I read!

Anyway, back to business - I do completely agree if you're going to have a specialist lens, then it makes sense that it can be used with confidence at all apertures.

But even if I had the Nocti 95, I'd probably still bring a summicron 50 along - I just find the Nocti too ungainly for general photography.

Naturally it depends on what you're doing as to whether you may agree - and if you don't often have the 50 on the camera anyway, then there is certainly little point in having two in the bag.

However, increasingly I'm mostly using Canon primes for the majority of my work, and usually bring along the Nocti 1 on an MP for the occasions when I need that unique F1 look - and regularly put a couple rolls through the camera on each assignment.

I bought a Nocti this year for $4,600 USD, and I swear it was worth EVERY CENT!!!

Now I can always get my money back, if not more, but spending $10,000 USD on a new one somehow does not make sense, especially when it has a 'Newer" look. Here, the Voigtlander 50mm f1.1 seems to be the better value for a "modern" design. The classic "Noctilux" look is eternal, and can only be achieved with the f1.0 version that was just discontinued. It will ALWAYS hold great value for what it does, much in the same way the Stradivarius does in music (it hits notes in a certain way that are unique, much in the same way the old Noctilux does, and both, may I add are hand made by master craftsman!)

Ahhh, sharpness. Very overrated. I sold my 75lux to buy a 75cron after I got my M8. Two years later I got lucky enough to find another used 75lux for the same price in even better condition.

When I take pictures of my wife or her friends, the 75lux and Noctilux with their lack of sharpness are indispensable (they are actually not bad, just compared to the asphericals at 100% view they are softer) .

No. It's for shooting at 0.95. ;)

One thing I will say about the new Noctilux is that when shooting with the M8 it seems to have lost some of the bokeh characteristics I used to love about the previous version. It does, however, turn night into day. This room was so dark I could barely see to focus.

I have both the F1 and F0.95. I agreed that the F0.95 seems to have los some of the boken characteristics. However, I do feel that the F0.95 is much easier to focus.
