Michael-IIIf Posted September 22, 2009 Share #21 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm in the mail order business so I know about lost parcels - it always amazes me how the Leica network trusts the mainstream couriers like that! Â I wonder how the cameras get to the dealers? There isn't a special Leica van driven by gnomes from Solms.
Advertisement Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Hi Michael-IIIf, Take a look here DHL has lost my M9!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest BigSplash Posted September 22, 2009 Share #22 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Picked up on Friday, scanned into Rotterdam (about 7 Km from where it has to arrive!) on Saturday on 8.01 in the morning. After that - nothing. "Sorry, we don't have it. Oh, it was scanned in? Well, maybe somebody put it on the wrong shelf. Sometimes it happens that we notice. You know, all these cardboard boxes look the same. We'll file a report..". It means I may see it in November, as I will be out of the country for five weeks. Â Very sorry to hear this......I have my own horror stories with DHL and cannot say that I am surprised. Hopefully it will show up eventually. Good luck
jaapv Posted September 22, 2009 Author Share #23 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Well, it has confirmed my opinion that I am justified in paying a premium for Fedex when I send something valuable - like Leicas
JLV Posted September 22, 2009 Share #24 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Jaap, Â We are very sorry to hear that. I hope you will get one asap. Â Warm regards, Jean-Luc
Fernmelder Posted September 22, 2009 Share #25  Posted September 22, 2009 Well, sometimes parcels are packed on the wrong shelf for 40 years. :p  No, sorry to hear, but glad they found it.
spylaw4 Posted September 22, 2009 Share #26 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Phew! Glad to hear it is on its way to you Jaap. Have a great trip and take lots more stunning shots with it.!
Sandokan Posted September 22, 2009 Share #27 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have a good trip and I look forward to seeing your photos. Did you order only the ONE M9? what about special leathers? Will your wide angles (21 or 24 'Lux) be too wide for it - maybe you want to sell it on :-) Â I once had a friend who shipped his Cyrus Amp from UK to Portugal - the box arrived OK and he signed for it, but the contents were replaced by 2 bricks. Insurance refused to cover it!
larry Posted September 22, 2009 Share #28 Â Posted September 22, 2009 I'm pleased that DHL was able to locate the package. That sort of "service" is the reason they went out of business here.
vish Posted September 22, 2009 Share #29 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Well, after Steve "spoke" to DHL in the UK the miracle which I could not produce in Holland, despite long telephone calls, was engineered by DHL UK. The parcel surfaced within minutes; "mislaid". I'll not inquire into the way in which it was achieved. It is in the courier's van now according to tracking. Â Good news - so I gather you must have obtained the other M9 at Ffordes? I was told there were only two!
marknorton Posted September 22, 2009 Share #30 Â Posted September 22, 2009 DHL is one of my biggest customers for many years and I find them an excellent company to deal with, to the extent I'm quite happy to use them to send items to Solms uninsured. Fedex and UPS also but, like airlines, everyone will have good and bad experiences of the different courier companies. Â Good that they've found you package Jaap. marknorton Posted September 22, 2009 Share #31  Posted September 22, 2009 Very sorry to hear this......I have my own horror stories with DHL and cannot say that I am surprised. Hopefully it will show up eventually. Good luck  Don't tell me, not content with making nuisance phone calls to Solms, you've also sent your CV to DHL to tell them how to run their operation. They're very hot on junk mail management...
guidomo Posted September 22, 2009 Share #32 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Will your wide angles (21 or 24 'Lux) be too wide for it - maybe you want to sell it on :-) Â Perhaps check the B&S section. There may be a 24 'Lux on offer for just this reason. Â Glad you're getting your M9, Jaap. Even though you were on top of me on ffordes' list. Julian Thompson Posted September 22, 2009 Share #33  Posted September 22, 2009 I wonder how the cameras get to the dealers? There isn't a special Leica van driven by gnomes from Solms.  Well, in my own experience dealing with high value electronics the manufacturer generally has a contracted logistics partner to deliver sealed and security tracked consignments to the dealer. I have never known Harman Kardon, Kenwood, Sony or JVC to use a courier to be honest, in over 15 years of dealing with them.  If no courier can be trusted, what do you suggest, apart collecting in person (which is quite a costly ride when it's a dealer in Hong Kong…) ?  Obviously, then, downstream, the dealer must send items of extreme value out if you're dealing at a distance, and that's where I have always been amazed at them just using the mainstream people (Fedex/DHL/DPD etc) but I understand there are few alternatives on a one off basis like that. I was just a bit surprised they didn't have the courier segregate the parcel into the security cages. When you consider that, for instance, DPD has a standard parcel value of £100 insurance and their additional insurance is 1% of the consignment value that would mean Jaap's dealer has paid somewhere near £50 to cover the parcel if DHL work on a similar basis. If you're getting £50 to insure a £5000 parcel you darned well better make sure it is as secure as possible because you don't want too many claims like that!!  Certainly the answer 'we don't know where it is at the moment, it's probably on the shelf with some other boxes because they all look the same' is not what I'd want to hear if I was a DHL boss with £50 in my hand covering a 5 grand box.....  Does that explain where I was coming from Gents? jaapv Posted September 22, 2009 Author Share #37 Â Posted September 22, 2009 Phew- they sent it out by special courier - clearly a case of bad conscience. Kudos to ffordes for getting the system into gear again quickly. First impression: an M8 with bells and whilstles that functions flawlessly out of the box. I'll have to start giving it its real workout next Monday, as I am rushed of my feet. The M8 will be along as second camera anyway. Ravi, sorry, my Summilux 24 - you'd have to kill me first. Woops! - that is a stupid thing to say to a gentleman of your descent:eek:
