c6gowin Posted September 23, 2009 Share #21 Posted September 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thorsten I really enjoy your M9 site. Your photos have a very natural look to them which I like very much. Thank you for your efforts to bring us your work and impression of the M9. Advertisement Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Hi c6gowin, Take a look here My Leica M9 page is updated (hurray!). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Fotomiguel Posted September 23, 2009 Share #22 Posted September 23, 2009 Very interesting review! The other articles and the whole website is worth to read. Personaly is really nice to see pictures of the M9 with the 50mm cron because is going to be my main lens on the M9. All the photographers with high skills who love rangefinder cameras are making really positive review of the M9. Is a big step for leica and photographers. plasticman Posted September 23, 2009 Share #23 Posted September 23, 2009 Just updated the page again with a few new photos (lots more to come) as well as some DNG/JPG samples - and more. Have a look: leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica M9 Digital Rangefinder Camera Crikey that's an amazing shot. I only wish the lightmeter hadn't been there - then it would have a truly timeless feel... or maybe the lightmeter adds tension? Great great shot anyway with beautifully subtle tones. Superb site also - congratulations.

Guest Lotw Posted September 23, 2009 Share #25 Posted September 23, 2009 Nice site, good photography and thanks for bringing it to us. You showed convincingly that DNG is worth the extra effort, whereas the last LFI stated that the JPEG-quality of the M9 is difficult to surpass with your own RAW-conversion. I would never 'pull my creditcard' (as someone stated here) on web-photo's though. Also, I am not mega-enthousiastic about the colors and skintones (reddish on my screen), so I'll wait for the firmware and/or Lightroom-update. plasticman Posted September 23, 2009 Share #26 Posted September 23, 2009 Ooh ... wait till you see the real shots That's just setting up. Who's to say the "real shots" are any better? But seriously, sometimes a random shot captures a mood better than anything - I liked the framing and tones in this one. I still have a problem with (in my opinion) the discussion of 'better' color in the M9 than the M8 - I think so much in color discussion is perceptual and subjective - but otherwise the images on your site and the information is wonderful. I think a lot of what you do would also have been brilliant with an M8 - so the comparisons between the cameras are not necessary really: it's the photographer's eye. germio Posted September 23, 2009 Share #27 Posted September 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Thorsten: I'm following your page closely and please keep the pictures coming. I can already tell a systematic difference between the M9 images and the DMR images, although I want to reserve my opinion until I see more pictures. Do you plan to get out of your R outfit and concentrate on the M now?
Overgaard Posted September 23, 2009 Author Share #28 Posted September 23, 2009 Hi Thorsten: I'm following your page closely and please keep the pictures coming. I can already tell a systematic difference between the M9 images and the DMR images, although I want to reserve my opinion until I see more pictures. Do you plan to get out of your R outfit and concentrate on the M now? No, I don't plan to get out of R though the M9 is the new baby and the magic of the R is gone in the sense that the blood transfusion has stopped from Leica. The R system is what it is, and it's easy to get stellar results from it. I'll be looking at S2 though. The M is new an sparkling, and I'm finding out which leg to be standing on. One interesting thing is that it seems that the smaller camera you get, the more daring you become in respect to the people you shoot. So it could develop into something interesting
newyorkone Posted September 25, 2009 Share #29 Posted September 25, 2009 Thorsten... This is the best review/summary of the Leica M9 that I have seen so far. It gives me a lot of insight into what I should expect. Thanks for taking the time to put it together! BTW, great photos too. Steven
Overgaard Posted September 25, 2009 Author Share #30 Posted September 25, 2009 Thanks. the pag has been updated today and apart from a page 2, it also contains now an actual SD card speed test (on page 1).
cnguyen Posted September 26, 2009 Share #31 Posted September 26, 2009 Love the light in your country... We get this light sometimes in Colorado but not as often as I like. I drool for the new M9 but went out and bought another M8... I still have bunch of R lenses and dbating whether to let them go for good. I think Leica has truly abandoned the R line... ho_co Posted September 28, 2009 Share #32 Posted September 28, 2009 Thorsten, your images and descriptions are a delight as usual! Do you use Auto ISO on the M9? Or do you use its ISO button to adjust as needed?
Overgaard Posted September 28, 2009 Author Share #33 Posted September 28, 2009 Thanks I feel I was "born and raised with the Digilux 2" so my starting point is Auto on the shutter dial and with the lenses wide open as much as possible and the ISO set; from there I go manual with the shutter dial. And all this require that the ISO is set at a certain point. For me that is 200 ISO mostly for allround, and then to 400 or 800 ISO if I go indoor or use a 3.4 lens or something. Somehow I can't think with 160 and 640 ISO, is has to be doubling and halving of sensitivity as with film. So you could say I have Auto shutter time, and then that is the main parameter I look for and adjust. If the ISO was going up and down as the camera pleased, I wouldn't be able to maintain the same control, though I can always point the camera to something and "pick a lightmetering" and then recompose. I do that as well some times. I do miss to read the shutter time in the viewfinder (when on manual time) as there's almost never enought light to read the dial on the top. chris_tribble Posted September 28, 2009 Share #34 Posted September 28, 2009 Dear Thorsten - many thanks for sharing the M9 LR profile - and please pass on appreciation and thanks to Sandy - I've replaced the interim profile adjustment I'd made and am delighted with the results. I'll be posting a set of M9 images from recent travels on return - but in the meantime anyone who wants a testament to how good these files are need only visit your excellent report. Beautiful work - thanks for sharing the images and your insights. Best

exile Posted September 29, 2009 Share #36 Posted September 29, 2009 Hi Thorsten. I first discovered your site a few weeks ago. Inspirational photos. I have been using your site to study your use of reflectors and lighting generally. Great work. Not the kind of pre-planned shots that I take, so very interesting in being new and very effective techniques. There is a lot of information that I haven't had a chance to look through yet, and I wish your site had previous articels organised by some kind of subject index. I also wondered why you never bought an M8 - but that is irrelevant now that you have an M9. Certainly you got amazing results from the Digilux2. You would have got great images with an M8 also - no doubt. I travel to Århus a few times every year on business. In fact I was there last week but didn't get a chance to walk around Den Gammle By again on this visit. It's obviously a superb location, and I can see why you shoot there so often. PM me if ever you have some free time in Copenhagen. It would be good to get a coffee (or a beer. And yes, I have to agree with others here that you are the first site I have seen online that really begins to suggest what the M9 is capable of. I won't be able to afford one for quite some time, and I'll probably skip it altogether and wait 5 years before looking at another M, but it's nice to see Leica pushing the boundaries and offering improved products. Keep up the good standard of your blog!
johnbuckley Posted September 29, 2009 Share #37 Posted September 29, 2009 Thorsten - I second Chris in thanking you for the M9 profile, which I have stored in Lightroom as Thorsten's Profile. On your site, you also include a link to a site from which I downloaded an M9 profile. I can't seem to get it to load in Lightroom on my Mac. I keep getting told that I "Camera Profiles can't be modified," when following your instructions. Any further instructions would be greatly appreciated. gravastar Posted September 29, 2009 Share #38 Posted September 29, 2009 Thorsten - I very much enjoyed reading your ongoing report on the M9, especially the section titled "The feeling of the Leica M9 - tool of the artist." In your comments on the M9 you say: Also, the contrast is quite high on the LCD screen why black shadows is far from black on the final picture. I'm just mentioning this as I did the error of changing exposure to a brighter one based on the preview on the screen. And I shouldn't have done that! I was also caught out by that but noticed you can check if there really is shadow detail by tilting the screen towards you and viewing at a shallow angle. Shadow detail becomes visible. The darkest areas may not be visible but it does help. I guess the screen's gamma changes with viewing angle. Another thing you can do is to record in DNG+JPEG and set the contrast to low. In DNG only mode the camera appears to use normal contrast for the display, in JPEG or DNG+JPEG the display contrast follows the JPEG setting. Disadvantage of this method is the extra card space needed for JPEGs and the low contrast tag associated with the DNG file which may have to be overridden when processing the DNG. Bob. jonoslack Posted September 29, 2009 Share #39 Posted September 29, 2009 Thorsten I haven't been aware of your site before the M9. Such wonderful stuff, and so much work as well. I'm seriously impressed. Your photographs are also fabulous . . . but, wonderful as all of this is, nothing quite comes up to the standard of the real beauty of your daughter (or is it just that you portray her so beautifully?). It's also great to see you using the less trendy leica lenses (like the 50 'cron). I've recently fallen back in love with the humble 90 elmarit, and the newer summarit 35. It's not compulsory to spend thousands on heavy lenses to get a wonderful image with an M9.
