Correction: No recall on the first batch of Leica M9!

Oh, Lordy, I hope Leica isn't holding up shipments for a tiny firmware fix! [EDIT: I should have said recalling cameras already shipped worldwide - holding up cameras before they leave the factory probably makes sense, if true.]

Green blobs and reflections (a la M8), yes, but a serial number readout?

(And yes, just checked - no serial number in the EXIF of my demo camera shots in Adobe Bridge)

I too hope there is not a problem. Mine is due at the dealer tomorrow morning and then should be winging its way on overnight courier to me in France. However if there IS a problem, I would much rather wait a bit and get a correct one, rather than having to send it back to wait in a queue at Solms.

As taken from LL site.

"Over this past weekend there have been rumours circulating on various web forums that the first shipment of Leica M9s have been recalled.

I spoke with a senior Leica executive in the U.S. on Sunday morning and he subsequently spoke with representatives of the company in Germany. I have been told that these recall reports are completely false and groundless.

The facts are that the first M9s have been on sale in Europe since the middle of last week, and U.S. and Canadian dealers will start to receive initial shipments toward the end of this week."

Wilson: a missing serial number in EXIF is a firmware fix, not requiring a trip to Solms, just a firmware download in a week or so, but I fully understand your attitude for a major hardware issue.

Personally, I pleaded with my rep in 2006 and had her more or less kidnap a "faulty" first-production-run M8 out of a shipment going back to Solms for revision so I would not have to wait an extra 30 days, and never regretted that choice (green blobs and streaks and all - sent it in for the warranty repair 6 months later).

Thanks, canlogic, for that update. I imagine there will be - discussions - between Solms and SH Photo come Monday.

Ahhh. that is wonderful news, I guess my card will be charged and I can pick up a box by the end of the week.. Yeeeha. :D

That's just it, it may not be just a firmware fix.

From what I remember the serial # is hard wired into one of the chips in the camera. This more then likely can not be written to through a firmware update so the only way to fix it is to send the camera back to Leica. Better to do it before a ton of them get out into users hands and then ask for them back in cost to Leica and aggravation to the owners. Like what happened with the M8.

Let's save Mark some time and money - you can see M9s being undissected from parts in the LL video here: Assembling the Leica M9

I love the moment about 29 seconds in where someone in the room is obviously applying "bigger hammer" engineering to something-or-other. Just hope it wasn't MY M9!

Did you hear the banging, hammering, in the background on the video. What are they doing to generate that sound? Is there a construction crew in the assembly plant.

And has anyone else notice in both that video and the still shots post at DPR the aftermarket baseplate the factory is using. It look as it has doors for both the SD card and battery.

Apologies to anyone living in Glasgow but that device used to be known as a "Glaswegian high precision adjustment tool" I would guess being used for a final sensor alignment.

Also they show a M9 having the sensor cleaned and the first time the tech tries to activate Sensor Cleaning mode the camera locks up, @ 14:40+ in the video. She then has to pop out the battery and reinsert it and start the process all over. The second time the shutter opens so the sensor can be cleaned.

Again they are using a aftermarket, or should that be a custom, baseplate.

That is just like the M8. So the M9 isn't that much different.

I really wish Mark Norton takes his M9 apart.

The issue of firmware in the EXIF is understood. Carl Bretteville tells me that when the firmware is demo-level (0.9xxx, for example) the serial number comes out as **********. In files with firmware 1.002, the serial numbers appear. So that problem has been fixed.

I took some shots this afternoon with a camera with firmware 1.002 and the serial number is **********

So you have a M9 and updated the firmware from the demo verion yourself to the 1.002 version and now the serial number shows?

The reason I ask is because I doubt any M9 owner that comes to the forum, like chris Tribble and others, hasn't updated there firmware to the newer version and they still don't have a serial number in the EXIF.

EDIT:

See post above this one.

On 10 September 2009 I ordered a Leica M9 from SH Photo GmbH in Nürnberg after I was told by email (confirmed on their web site) that the camera was available. They also confirmed delivery in two days. This morning (13 September here) I received a response to my query to say that there was a "call back" from the factory on the first delivery of cameras.

Does anyone know anything about this?

- Vikas

hi,

I don't understand SH Photo promising a M9 "at once"?? The big sellers (as like as "leica bei meister" in Hamburg) need 6 up to 8 weeks (!!!) for germans photographers interested in buying a M9.

I don't trust SH photo, and it seems I'm right.

German Leica M fans have to wait, but we do it knowing to receive an excellent new model auf Leica M.

Hope, you receive vour cam as fast as promised (9days!!). And: a new firmware will NEVER be a reason of call back. Just download and solve your "firmware problem" by yourself !!

Greeting from germany
