Daniel Ortego Posted September 13, 2009 Share #41 Posted September 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sapphire glass petition? Sure thing I'm in. Actually already sent them a letter. Where can I sign? The downgrade makes no sense. If I remember correctly Stefan Daniel said at one point that the upgrade program was not really sensible as more people could have bought an all new M8.2 instead of upgrades ... I’m reading this thread with interest and I vividly recall the entire BS that came from Leica when they introduced the on again, and off again M8 upgrade path. In fact, I became somewhat distrusting of anything the CEO would publish. He was eventually let go, and so went the original plan. I ended up folding altogether and admittedly, I wish I had hung in there. Well, I’m back for the FF and the glass that I dearly missed. In fact, I didn't know about the spray paint, and I just figured the sapphire was a given. Still, I will likely remain skeptical from here on out but I will also likely remain a digital M-Series junkie. Regards,
Advertisement Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Hi Daniel Ortego, Take a look here M9 - Paint Only, No Chrome.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
BKK dan Posted September 13, 2009 Share #42 Posted September 13, 2009 Actually, I'd be interested in thoughts on why the sapphire glass is important anyway. I have always put some kind of protector on camera screens and lately have been using the GGS screens. They're inexpensive and easily installed (and replaced) but seem to wear like, well, sapphire glass, or nearly. The issue of cost- and corner-cutting on the metal finish bothers me a great deal more. How you replace a GGS screen John? I bet it's easy to screw up? A Luigi Case with a hanging back looks like an OK alternative ...

john_newell Posted September 14, 2009 Author Share #44 Posted September 14, 2009 How you replace a GGS screen John? I bet it's easy to screw up? I mean this in a friendly way - you're kidding, right?
BKK dan Posted September 14, 2009 Share #45 Posted September 14, 2009 I mean this in a friendly way - you're kidding, right? Nope, I'm plain serious. The "how to" says: Use a thin plastic business card or similar item (the plastic package of this protector could be used as the tool) to slide around the edge of the screen to remove it. * Do not pull or use fingernails to lift the four corners of the screen protector as it may break the glass protector, hurt your fingers and/or damage the camera. Doesn't sound like an operation for dummies to me. So how you remove the GSS protector john?
marknorton Posted September 14, 2009 Share #46 Posted September 14, 2009 I agree you can use a screen protector but, for this price, you shouldn't have to.
j_lir Posted September 14, 2009 Share #47 Posted September 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mark, when do you to start to investigate if it is possible to swap the LCD from M8.2 to M9? Regards Steve I was just thinking that I would get my M8.U's screen swapped out...
lct Posted September 14, 2009 Share #48 Posted September 14, 2009 EUR 5,500 is a fair price to me, not necessarily 5,750. A solid screen protector sells for how much, EUR 20?
marknorton Posted September 14, 2009 Share #49 Posted September 14, 2009 I do not know this for sure but seems that if you have your LCD screen replaced, they actually replace the rear casting with the glass aready attached; that suggests the glass is glued in using a specialised process which can't be done on even a Leica service workbench. It may be special UV cured adhesives, so I think the possibility of removing the cover glass from a redundant M8.2 and sticking it on the M9 with a few drops of super-glue is a remote one. My transition from "this is good value, fair price" to "this is a rip-off, no way" is much less clearly defined than yours LCT.
jaapv Posted September 14, 2009 Share #51 Posted September 14, 2009 Or you who wear the M8 around the neck and shoulder, no probs with scratched LCD screens? Most robust body, but cheap screen ... the downgrade from the M8.2 just doesn't add up. Some tummy padding, no problems there..
georg Posted September 14, 2009 Share #52 Posted September 14, 2009 I think we should make clear that we're interested in chrome and sapphire glass in the M9, Leica will listen. They wanted to abandon chrome lenses for over a decade now, customers kept it alive.
rolu Posted September 14, 2009 Share #53 Posted September 14, 2009 to come back to the PAINT ONLY question: Has anyone taped (e.g. the M8.2 sign) or sticked a level on top of a paint camera ? - is the paint visibly damaged when the tape is removed? BKK dan Posted September 14, 2009 Share #54 Posted September 14, 2009 EUR 5,500 is a fair price to me, not necessarily 5,750. A solid screen protector sells for how much, EUR 20? A €20 sticker on a €5,500 body? Something just doesn't sound right. I wouldn't put such a cheap sticker on my Honda. Leica is also mainly about aesthetics. By providing the M8.2 with the sapphire glass Leica implicitly stated that the plastic thing probably wasn't up to Leica standards. If you're not willing to pay 5% more for a - yes - luxury product you're probably with the wrong product anyway. Again, you don't downgrade a product line at the expense of durability. Price increases are the norm. But not quality decreases.

marknorton Posted September 14, 2009 Share #56 Posted September 14, 2009 I've had a reply from Stefan Daniel thanking me for buying an M9 and for my "clear comments" (you can imagine) which, he says, will be considered for "future products".
