portocar Posted September 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why is the new M9 silver, "gray"? Does it match the color of the silver lense? It is less noticeable in the field? Is the new color more durable?
Advertisement Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Hi portocar, Take a look here Why is Leica M9 silver "gray"? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
4season Posted September 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 10, 2009 I'm just speculating, but powder coatings are probably more environmental than chrome plating, and Mr. Kaufmann is a founding member of Germany's Green Party, if I'm not mistaken. Overgaard Posted September 10, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 10, 2009 As said in the official Leica Camera FAQ: "Is a Silver chrome version planned? No, this is not planned. Silver lenses match the control elements on the steel gray version." The FAQ can be seen here: http://media.leica-camera.com/res/dnl/en/leica_m9_faq_en.pdf
Overgaard Posted September 10, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 10, 2009 I wonder, has anyone had possibility to put titanium lenses on the grey M9 - how does it look? I've been looking at a titanium 50/1.4 which I might as well get if it goes well with the grey.
veritas_1 Posted March 4, 2012 Share #5 Posted March 4, 2012 Don't really know maybe they were trying to be different as the M8 was silver. But then again there is the M9-P which again is silver, something for everyone
Double Negative Posted March 4, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 4, 2012 A random blip in the Leica machine. The gray is handsome, but not my thing.

IWC Doppel Posted March 4, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 4, 2012 I heard that the old chroming process was not Eco and the plans for an Eco finish was not ready for the 9, until the P so it was painted grey instead. It'll be interesting to see if the 10 goes back to classic silver and black. As for hammer tone I painted my engine of my first car in hamerite and hated it ever since ! davidbaddley Posted March 4, 2012 Share #10 Posted March 4, 2012 Bet it's a fashion thing. The steel gray finish looks a lot like other "titanium" finishes that have become so popular. If they had wanted to use paint to match their traditional silver color, they could easily have done so. I especially dig the use of silver control bits with the gray. Since the black script on gray will miss-match the black lenses anyway, this gives the entire package an eclectic look that is also en vogue but individualistic. Since my other Leicas are black, I decided to go with the silver-gray just for variation. Since the M9 is my first digital M (although I've been using Ms for a long time), it seemed appropriate to go with something that is the same but different. I was apprehensive at first, I do appreciate the "stealthy" aesthetic of black, but I love the classy elegance of the steel gray.
