chris weeks photos with M9

I like CW's photography and have been following him for several years. He is a great street shooter/celeb shooter with an identifiable style. Looking over his M9 flicker stream I saw Weeks... I did not see Weeks + M9. Now you could give him a box brownie and it would still look like Weeks. All to the good because its the photographer not the gear... more or less.

Now maybe this is just self justification because I really like shooting with my M8 and have no interest in going back to a DSLR. I know that my photography changed for the better when I switched to rangefinder but I'm not sure that I'd see much if any change by moving to an M9. Now if my M8 dies then sign me up but now with a big ticket price I just can't see pumping for it no matter what Chris does with it.

I apologize for being uncharitable, and he may be the next HC-B, but I don't find his images all that good, and his blog reveals a really unpleasant tone.

Same feeling, really not my cup of tea... And difficult to appreciate M9's superiority with these samples.

Love him or hate him, Chris Weeks is one of the folks who's opinions I would really rate regarding the M9 and gear in general. No BS - does it work or not, real world field experience.

Kind of relieved that he liked it! :D

Exactly my thoughts in posting the link.

In case anyone wants a peak at some more real world M9 shots, Chris Weeks now has a gallery up on flickr. He's apparently been shooting with one for a while now. (Lucky b@$†@®d).

Question... The high contrast blacks are all blocky. Could be the web page compression suckiness. Thoughts?

These folks got the camera in advance for a reason ... if you're one of them, would you ever badmouth it?

The good thing about this is that he's about light and DOF. That's at least good from my stand. I don't care about the technical details or the screen size on the back as long as the pictures look great and the camera is a pleasant companion.

But he also abandoned the M8 after a few weeks trial, so when he says the M9 is the camera, I believe him. He has loved the film Leicas to bit, didn't like the M8 but likes the M9. Makes sense to me.

I treat him in a similar manner to Ken Rockwell, and also apologise as above. Both express their views, which I find extreme and forceful, without fear or favour and I wish them well for that in these sanitised times. Reading them does not mean agreeing with their every word or indeed liking their work.

Weeks is a decent photographer who knows how to use a Leica but his blog entries are embarrassing. He's far too old and middle class to use language in the way he does and it just makes him sound ludicrously pretentious ( which in this business is quite an acheivement).

All this talk about the language. I thought someone had watched his 41 minutes documentarry but just now see that it's not even linked to.

Have a look here. 41 minutes documentary about Leica RF shooting and the Leica M9:

Street Photography: Documenting the Human Condition - Part One of Three on Vimeo

The language in the video is very decent, by the way!

His pics on flickr seem pretty good... nothing innovative but of a standard that you'd expect from someone who claims to be a real paid photographer.

Some of the text and the blog though reeks of narcissim which I find a bit ugly. It actually reads as if he's really young and still pretty egocentric.

I like good street photography. I like edgy photography. I don't recall ever thinking even one of Chris's images was interesting. I find his blog is really hard work. I've tried several times. Wannabe written all over the whole production. But I suppose Leica wanted wide ranging "real user" feedback.

After five series of The Wire, his language seems quite un-American to me.

I really enjoyed the videos. Good entertainment.

TBH, this English Gentleman did find CW's treatise on street shooting informative, but somewhat raw.

Pleased to say he made me a Flickr Contact today. Charity pays. ;)
