Lens Table ?

Of most interest to me, and I suspect many others is the lens table for manual entry. Could a new owner, or someone who had had better luck than me filtering the available information, let us know what is on the table ? ie is it generic 50mm f2 (which would cover a Zeiss) or specific ? And if specific how far does it go into the Leica heritage eg does it go to a Summar f2 ? via all the other f2s inbetween (I suspect not ;) )

TIA

Chris from the manual - page 38 of the English language PDF...

Manual entry of lens type/focal length

Due to a lack of coding, older Leica M lenses are not

identified by the camera body, but “identification” can

be carried out using the menu.

3. In the list in the Manual sub-menu, select the lens

used.

• A lens list appears in the monitor (1.32), which

also contains the respective item numbers to

allow definitive identification.

Notes:

• The item number is engraved on the opposite side

to the depth of field scale on many lenses.

• The list contains lenses that were available without

coding (before around June 2006). Lenses launched

more recently are only available with coding and

therefore cannot be selected manually.

I wonder when then started then ? It is new (in Leica years) as my 35mm f2 Summicron 1992 doesn't have that ( and it has been Leica coded). My 1996 90mm Elmarit doesn't 380**** but my 28mm f2 Summicron does 394****

I suppose "item number" is the 5 digit product code used for all Leitz/Leica lenses from 1961: old Summicron 50=11818, first Summilux 35=11870 and so on. I'm curios to see the list... seems to me is difficult they listed ALL... anyway the 5 digit code is engraved on not so many lenses: it's a rather recent attitude.

I've posted the lens table here.

Bob.

Thanks! Nice work, Gravastar ! Many uncodable lenses are included... probably is not so significant as in M8, due to the no-need of UVIR filter, but is appreciable that, logically, these data are recorded in the EXIF file.

Is obvious they do not include 3rd party lenses... but of course one can declare, say, a CV as the Leica "sibling or nearest to" and have focal recorded.

I asked the Leica rep today about compatibility with the CV15 and Zeiss 18. He said that 1) he didn't know and 2) caution is in order due to the thicker sensor filter. Has anyone mounted these lenses?

Could this also apply to the much beloved 50mm collapsable Elmar M 2.8?

But, Luigi!

How can I label my Hologon 15/8?

Didn't someone say somewhere that lenses from 15mm upward would be included?

Howard... once again (as for M8) the M9 manual states "CANNOT BE USED" about the Hologon 15; no way... throw it away or, given it's useless... give me it for a beer... :D

I have the previous (pre-ASPH) version of the cron 35 and 90.

In the look up table there is one look up value for the pre-ASPH version of these lenses and and look up value for the new aspherical version.

  1. Is the in-camera correction for the per-ASPH version of the lens different than the correction for the new lenses?
  2. If I get the old lenses coded, will the camera then recognise them as the new version of the lens and thus apply "wrong" in-camera correction?

In other words, is it better to manually select these lenses than to use the coding? I assume the differens is marginal, but I would still like to know the difference.

The Elmar 50mm #11831 is in the list, so that's good news! - What I'm wondering is f you could safely collapse it on the M9???

Best regards,

Michael

Well, I cannot imagine any sensor filter being millmetres thick. The only problem might be a shutter that is located far forward - but I cannot credit that, as that would create a host of problems.

1. Probably

2. No, the lens code will be specific to the model - the code for a pre-ASPH lens will be different to the code for the ASPH version.
