antonv Posted September 9, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will keep my M8 as it is a good camera and I think many others will do so as well. In many threads on the subject of exposure bracketing, prominent forum members where against it, fortunately Leica did not listen to them and have introduced exposure bracketing in the M9. Leica please keep your promise that the M8 always remains up to date I look forward to the next M8 firmware update with auto exposure bracketing function. If you also feel strongly on this subject, please add your support to this thread.
Advertisement Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Hi antonv, Take a look here The M8 Auto Exposure Bracketing Support Thread. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Double Negative Posted September 9, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 9, 2009 I don't care about the bracketing so much... What I DO want is the manual selection of lenses from the internal database!
andreas_thomsen Posted September 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2009 stop dreaming. the m8 is an old modell and leica needs to make money to survive. it was already a mistake to introduce an upgrade programm. if u buy an mercedes e class u know that 3 years later a new model will be launched and u can't upgrade an old car!!!!!! thats the way economy runs. if u can get features of the latest modell for free for an outdated modell why should someone buy a new camera??????? cheers andy
chris_livsey Posted September 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 9, 2009 if u can get features of the latest modell for free for an outdated modell why should someone buy a new camera??????? cheers andy Because Leica created a precedent in the discreet mode from the M8.2 being made available to the M8 by firmware upgrade and we hope they will continue that level of support for their digital products as they do for film products still offering a factory service for the full M series back to the M3 a very honourable record. vanhulsenbeek Posted September 9, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anton, I support you position. So do I. Leica cannot - nor will I think - let the bottom drop out of their M8 customer base. Let's just be a little patient!
photophile Posted September 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 9, 2009 Anton - I too have the hope that L will update and upgrade some software for the 8. Contniued support for older products just ensures customers loyalty down the road.
chris_livsey Posted September 9, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 9, 2009 .....and went nearly bancrupt with this kind of product policycheers andy But had a large loyal base of customers when it finally brought out a decent new product

I wasn't expecting as many firmware upgrades to the M8 as Leica already provided, so for those I am thankful. I do not *expect* any additional firmware upgrades for the M8. Feels like the development cycle is mature. However, I would be happy if they would continue to "value add" by releasing additional M8 upgrades in the near future. Thanks! offshore Posted September 10, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 10, 2009 ISO upgrade if possible, even if it means a new processor upgrade. Lens selection in menu. Info button programmable so I can select what I want it to do. Move choice of color or b&w to set menu. Auto exposure bracketing.
Max Alfy Posted September 10, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 10, 2009 Anton, I support your bracketing exposure bracketing request for the M8. I have expressed this several times on this forum, only to be scoffed at by “experts”. I appreciate that Leica nonetheless implemented that feature in the M9. To implement it in the M8 only means adapting a few lines of M9 code in the M8 firmware, with very few dollars to be spent. And in my opinion far more valuable than Auto ISO (I tried it, but went back to manual).
jtorrents Posted September 10, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 10, 2009 Count me on. Hope that Leica hear M8 users. Auto exposure bracketing and manual lens detection should be in the next firmware update.
AbbeyPhoto Posted September 10, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 10, 2009 Heathens! One of the handling joys with the M8 is the ability to twiddle real shutter & aperture dials ... stop being so lazy! Next thing you'll be wanting autofocus & live view It's a Leica for heaven's sake - if you want gadgets buy a Sony or something
epand56 Posted September 10, 2009 Share #15 Posted September 10, 2009 .....and went nearly bancrupt with this kind of product policycheers andy I don't think people will buy the M9 for bracketing and manual selections of lenses. People will buy it because of the FF sensor, the bigger DNG files and because of no more need of UV/IR filters. And maybe easy ISO selection. I'm sure there is plenty of space for a new interesting firmware upgrade for us M8ers.
hookonclassic Posted September 10, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 10, 2009 I am happy M8.2 user. I hope Leica will provide new firmware update for: 1) Manual lens selection option with Leica lenses database 2) Exposure bracketing for HDR 3) ISO quick access function using the current "info" button
benkelley Posted September 10, 2009 Share #17 Posted September 10, 2009 I'm for manual lens selection as the #1 benefit in new M8 firmware... the list of lenses is already in the code, as it needs to recognize the 6-bit!!! Should be cake.

I would add that Leica, for whatever reasons, did a less than stellar job with the M8 and they'd be wise to learn from their customer service issues of the past and do things right--not just releasing new models like the M9 (which is an achievement in itself)--but in supporting the customers who got them where they are today--us. This isn't some sort of throw-away mass consumer product. It should be useful for years, like the M series of lenses. I hope Leica will view the M8 as more of an entry level model and support those who can't afford or don't care for the M9. It's the right thing to do. ptarmigan Posted September 11, 2009 Share #20 Posted September 11, 2009 There was some mention in the David Farkas review of the M9 about difficulties in implementing changes suggested to the M8 firmware and I quote: "Apparently, retrofitting the M8 firmware with this option wasn't a practical possibility." ..........which he got direct from Stefan Daniel.
