Yes, if you are willing to go for something like 3.5-6.5, then the zoom can be relatively compact. However, I wouldn't want to buy an expensive Leica with such a slow lens. I'd expect to have something like 2.8 over the whole range. Several forum members even asked for a lens comparable to the one of the Digilux 2...

Now that makes more sense... I hope they just make different fixed focal lengths.

I don't mind the single focal length at all. Back in the film days, quality fixed-lens 35mm cameras were common (Minilux, Nikon T35, Konica Hexar, etc.). I do wish, though, that the X1 lens was one stop faster.

Yeah. I like the camera, but not at two grand. If it was a Summicron at that price, then yes. But a 2.8? For me, that's a grand, tops.

Considering Leica's 24mm f/2.8 lens for the M costs like $4000... I don't understand this line of thinking.

What's not to understand? I know they can't make a cheaper/faster lens at 24mm, but as a value proposition, the camera just doesn't do enough for me at that price. Cropped sensor, no viewfinder, shutter lag, etc. For that money I'm into a second (used) M body or a used Lux or some other goodies which are more valuable to me. I like the idea of the camera, and understand the limitations, but I can't do it at that price.

(Maybe they should have gone with a Summicron in a 40mm FOV... fully commit to the digital Minilux concept.)

I understand Ted W, but you are paying the Leica tax and an early adopters fee for the camera being the first compact with this sensor. Double whammy! If the lens was an F/2, they'd be charging $3000 probably. :) I don't like the price either, but it's still not a bad camera...even at $2000. You cannot buy any other real Leica (i.e. not panasonic) new for anywhere near that price.

If anyone looks at this thread is evident how much in few weeks the mood change: from an absolute no X1 with interchangeable lens to perhaps yes.

Even more after the Leica camera announcement that X1 will be a family. The only remaining contrast are : can bee too expensive, too big, the quality.

Leica have to consider carefully those opinions!

So please tell us how possible is it to fit such lenses to the X1? So its potentially already an interchangeable camera? J

Interchangeable would mean that the X1 lens can be removed which is not the case apparently. All i can say is there is a screw-thread around the lens. Reminds me of my Digilux 1 which can be attached to a spotting scope.
