I believe that a project type CL-D would be something sensational. The technology is there, I just hope that someone is reading in Leica ...

Amazing! I'm sure Leica never, ever thought about that!!! ;)

Your CL-D is a used M8.

BTW -- Did you look at the video with Stephan Daniel? If not, I recommend it as an interesting and educational way to pass an hour. Pay particular attention to the comment about a used Porsche 911.

Sure, just like there was never going to be an M8, or how the M9 was physically impossible, or how the R10 was imminent, or how...

1. How is a CL-D going to be less expensive than a used M8?

2. How is a competent CL-D going to be significantly less expensive than a new M9? (How do you propose to save $3,000 to $4,000?)

3. What did the "used Porsche 911" reference in the video mean?

4. It is becoming clear that the M body series (MP, M7, M8, & M9) has been reaffirmed as the cornerstone of the Leica camera brand. How will development and introduction of a CL-D do anything but chip away at that cornerstone?

Leica surely has it's own ideas, but possible answers to 1&2 are all over this and other threads, e.g. sizes, materials, features, existing R&D, usual cheapening of electronics with time, etc... your choice for that letter to Santa :)

Q3 you see it as you want, like everybody else. But as I previous said, remember the M8, M9, R10 etc... examples when interpreting Leica's statements on future developments ;)

And the M8s are good but discontinued and were never fully ridden of key issues (IR..), so hard to really think of them as long-term entry-level and/or backup Ms.

Q4 discussed many times... My personal opinion is that, if anything, it would introduce more people to the M mount and end-up driving M sales up.

I would love a digi CL, but, again, an X2 system, just like the X1 but with interchangeable lenses in M mount would already be great, and cheaper than a CL, a real entry-level system.

A digi CL could then be an intermediate system, fantastic...

The easiest way to save 3000-4000 dollars is to adopt a cropped frame sensor. :)

Leica could easily expand on the X1 platform should they want to, keep in mind although they need to retain the M mount but in the meantime they can throw away all the clunky rangefinder mechanism.

That's a lot of money to save.

Then they can include a built in proper OVF with focus confirmation for manual focusing. I personally don't like any type of EVF at all but there may be folks who will find it an acceptable option too.

Technically, they can build a 35mm FF M mount (note, I don't say rangefinder) camera with an OVF equipped with focus confirmation for manual operation. In the mean time, they can keep the RF model as an a-la-carte item for anyone who is willing to pay a premium to complete their private collection.

It is not just only a question of money.

Why I should buy a camera with an old technology? With an indecent sensor for the class of the camera (without the ability to use high ISO because the sensor producing too much noise - a problem which is repeated with the M9 too, said Stefan Daniel) ?

With the requirement to install filters in certain situations, to avoid photo with a bad expositions ? With a battery that with the cold, has very low performances ? With a shutter that makes a noise that seems to have in hand a Voigt / Cosina ? With a forced upgrade so cheeper, just only 1.000 Euro to repair some important mistakes ?

It's better a new X1.

It's much better a future X2 (or CL-D)...

Obviusly, imho... :D

It will not be the X2. It will be called the X1 Zoom. Remember Minilux Zoom, CM Zoom?

I don't think there will be an interchangeable X series. And I'm fine with it. I like a fixed lens Leica.

Heck if you insist, maybe put a tri-elmar on it and call it the Tri-X1!

Fixed zoom = slow zoom = wide DoF + high ISO hence noise or smearing in low light. So why choosing an APS camera then? Interchangeability is the only way to get small fast lenses. If we don't need the latters, a good small sensor camera will do the job for less IMHO.
