Would you sell your M8 or your M8.2 if you get a M9?

Always entertaining when the responses to the question "IF you get an M9...?" amount to "I'm not getting an M9". Pointless - but entertaining.

I'll probably keep 1 M8 and trade 1 M8 - since the M8 trade value is about $1,500, it's much cheaper to keep it than buy an additional M9 right away. Infrared pix, faster shutter/sync speeds - it'll have an opportunity for use.

A lot of buyers will have to sell their existing camera to be able to afford an M9, whether they really wish to or not.

This isn't a new problem or phenomenon. I remember in 1959/60, when I was researching models and prices whilst saving up for my first 35mm camera, I was puzzled by the large number of Leica IIIas, bs, cs and fs listed for sale in the Amateur Photographer.

The reason, of course, was that restrictions on the importation of new 'professional' cameras, such as the M3, into UK had recently been relaxed and many keen amateurs were taking the opportunity to upgrade and trading in the second and third hand models they'd been forced to use since WW2 ended. Quite a lot of those Leicas listed in AP would have been 'liberated' in Germany by members of the armed forces.

IIRC, a new M3 body cost around £125 at the time - about 12 weeks wages for someone on average earnings...

So $8,000 (worst case) for the M9 /12 = $666 a week (there's that number again!!) = $35,000 per year income.

Plus ça change, plus c'est le même chose - just about spot on the US median income for 2005 (most recent figures) Personal income in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I came this close to buying the new 18mm but when the rumors of a new ff M became so rampant, I put that on hold. I would need that plus my M8.2 to fund an M9 and hopefully not much more than that. If the M9 is just too expensive, using an M8.2 is not suffering all that much......

Andy,

The numbers are obviously a little old (2005) but I would have thought that the more important demographic would be the 16% of households earning over $100k which my gut feel leads me to suspect reflects more the likely the typical Leica buyer. (or perhaps AGI which was $55k in 2006)

Interesting specs on affordability nonetheless. Maybe these current Leica prices aren't so shocking when looked at with eyes with a longer historical perspective.

Sadly I'd have no choice but to sell my M8u when and if the time comes. I'll try hard to resist the temptation of selling Leica glass. I only sell glass to buy different glass. If I use my Nocti once a year I still would keep it. I can't stand the thought of selling a lens which holds it's value to buy a camera which will inevitably loose it's value.

I've already ordered the M9 and I'm not going to sell my dear M8. It works so good. I'm going to use it as a second body and in some situations when there is a risk for the camera. I'm going to try to keep my m9 nice, so the m8 can do the hard and dangerous work. I also will train with the M8.
