stevelap Posted September 5, 2009 Share #21 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I tend to agree with Ed's post above, but we need to see detailed specifications to be sure. I would hope that Leica have worked hard on the AF for example, because if we look at Olympus and Panasonic the EP-1's AF is reported to be as bad (slow) as the GF1's is good (fast). Â There is also the viewfinder question of course, built -in (it doesn't seem so) or external accessory, either optical or EVF? If the only way to manually focus is at arms length via the rear LCD.....
Advertisement Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Hi stevelap, Take a look here X1 discussion thread (merged). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted September 5, 2009 Share #22  Posted September 5, 2009 It needs an optical finder  Who wants to use a $2000 camera at arms length? It's just ridiculous. That's for mobile phones and £150 point and shoots...
adan Posted September 5, 2009 Share #23 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Uh-oh - bad form to post images/text from the brochure, Mark - See BIG NOTE at the top of the forum pages. Â Assuming only that post gets deleted, and the thread remains - X1 is certainly revolutionary for Leica - in-house compact digital rather than rebadge Panny. It is revolutionary in the compact digital world for maintaining shutter speed dial and manual focus dial, rather than push-buttons with an LCD readout. it is semi-revolutionary in stepping into the realm of fixed-lens APS-C cameras, where only the Sony R-1 and Sigma have walked before. adan Posted September 5, 2009 Share #24 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Andy - if I buy a 35mm accesory finder and ship it to you, will you shut up about the missing optical finder. There is an accesory shoe... a trivial problem to solve.
c6gowin Posted September 5, 2009 Share #25 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Agreed, it needs an optical finder. I am not opposed to using a hot shoe mounted finder although a built-in finder would be better if it could be accomplished without increasing the body size too much. StS Posted September 5, 2009 Share #26 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Difficult for me to judge from the leaked information, until a material camera leaks out - I need to hold a camera in the hand to see, how it feels and handles... Â Stefan

If the only way to manually focus is at arms length via the rear LCD..... Â With an APS-sized sensor, 24mm should be about 35mm in film terms. So.....I wonder if a ordinary 35mm optical viewfinder would suffice? Of course focusing would still be an issue. Â Jim B.

adan Posted September 5, 2009 Share #30 Â Posted September 5, 2009 I've yet to see a built-in finder in a compact digital that's as good as a SBLOO or a SBOOI. Once the X1 goes live in a month or so, with its own brochure, I'll bet a revived SBLOO (or close approximation) tops the accesory list. Â In general, I have no interest in a compact digital. Just as happy carrying a full-sized M body (the Digilux 2 being unique to its time, and not especially compact). But the X1, with manual scale-focus + a decent add-on optical finder, could make me rethink.

There is an accesory shoe... a trivial problem to solve. Â It's not just the provision of a viewfinder, or not, the important issue is how to focus. AF, fine if it works more like the GF1 than the EP-1. Zone focus, yes, but manual focus? If it's arms length on the rear LCD only I'm with Andy and James. nugat Posted September 5, 2009 Share #33 Â Posted September 5, 2009 The Olympus E-P1 optical VF for the 17mm lens will do. 150$ or so. Â Generally I don't give this Leica much chance beyond a hard core Leicaist following. Earth to Solms! E-P1 and Panny GF1 have interchangable lenses! They cost half! The image quality is same good! CL was a different story. It was a fullframe 36x24 and took M lenses. It was so successfull (60,000 units delivered in three years) it had to be killed because Ms' lives were in danger. No such threat here. PS. ouch. the oly VF is 4:
stevelap Posted September 5, 2009 Share #34 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Since this is primarily an M forum I've started an X1 thread in the Digital Forum, in the interests of clarity and ease of reference, if anyone is interested:).
Overgaard Posted September 5, 2009 Share #35 Â Posted September 5, 2009 The X1 might have what it takes to be the third camera for many pro's who can't think with manual focus but would like a small Leica reportage camera as well. Â And it will probably also work as an intro-camera to M9 set with lenses.

nugat Posted September 5, 2009 Share #37 Â Posted September 5, 2009 Now think about attaching this 800$ Leica marvel to E-P1 or G-F1. Autofocus, OIS, macro. LUMIX G Micro System Lens | PRODUCTS | LUMIX | Digital Camera | Panasonic Global
nhabedi Posted September 5, 2009 Share #38 Â Posted September 5, 2009 The image quality is same good! Â Wow, you know that already? Good for you. Â FWIW, if the X1 has (as it seems to be the case) real controls for aperture and shutter speed it will be a camera which is totally different from the EP-1 or GF-1 with their typical button/dial-based user interfaces that virtually every digicam nowadays has. That alone puts it in a different league and will attract different buyers. Â This camera could be a new classic and I think it's a very smart move of Leica to not build another me-too model. I hope they'll succeed with this.
fuchs Posted September 5, 2009 Author Share #39  Posted September 5, 2009 Maybe Leica's point;).  I agree that this camera is designed as to not detract from Leica M lines sales, but I know plenty of PJs and reportage pros who still hold an M6/7 in their bags, or a Canon G9/10, or a Ricoh, etc for their personal projects or for those shots where a big chunky DSLR will not fit.  If the X1 is capable of IQ at least in the league of any other DSLR out there, as the sensor choice leads one to believe, I can bet they will adopt this as their stealth camera.  There have been rumours of a Leica-Canon collaboration on sensors... maybe (ok, ok, let's dream) this is the result. My wishlist would include: -Canon 7D 18MP CMOS sensor with useable ISOs in the 1600-6400 range -Panny G1's fast AF and EVF at least -Ricoh GR and GX series ergonomy and Snap focusing mode  and all that combined with a 35mm equivalent FL stunning lens as the 24/2.8 Elmarit-M... Oh my...
mooky Posted September 5, 2009 Share #40 Â Posted September 5, 2009 It appears that the X1 is a fixed lens camera - which I am not convinced is the best idea - although it may be the easiest way to go. Does anyone know for sure of the sensor size? Â It would seem the camera could be a bit more of a 'hit' if had interchangeable lenses - especially if its in the mid to high $1500 range. If it's an APS sensor then having lens choices would make it a descent system camera for those trying Leica for the first time. Â Not sure how well it will sell - but I hope it does.
