I have had mine for over a week and have had ZERO issues in my shooting. Then again, I am not TRYING to 'break it'

Buy it if you think Leica will eventually some all the problems to your satisfaction (I for one, understand the physics here, and do not expect miracles)

Don't buy it if you are SURE that Leica will fall short for you.

Think which will be worse nightmare --buyer regret

or.... being out of the game!

Erl, most of the people who've taken delivery seem to have decided to keep them.

Yes it looks like the camera will probably need returning to Solms at some time, but you'll have use of it until then.

I have a camera on order and have been having all the same concerns as yourself. In my case I've decided to take the camera when it appears. Your decision may be different, but it's yours to make :-)

Is it time to roll out the violins??? Don't get me wrong, I hope Leica succeeds as a company but why should they do better when so many enablers are willing to cheer them on even when they stiff their clients? Dysfunctional falmilies resist challenge, this Leica family appears to be one of them (it's Leica right or wrong on this forum). I'll be happy to be a loyal customer when it is deserved.

Good luck to you Earl, whatever you decide. I wish you the best possible and most mature outcome.

For those of you with surplus funds on your hands, in lieu of buying a camera that is not street ready, here's an organization that can really use your support while you wait for Leica to come through with a serious solution to their most recent fiasco: Kids With Cameras. Kids with Cameras

Adios,

Wilfredo

Take out one of your older Leica bodies, put the body to your ear, click the shutter and hit the film wind lever....continue to listen and click...gradually the immediate urge to buy the M8 will abate. Heck, you might even decide to put some film into one of those bodies!

Wait until all the bugs are fixed.

Sincere best wishes and good luck. Obviously a lot of the advice is very much tongue in cheek...the decision is purely based on your gut reaction. Let us know how you make out.

Hi,

My Leica dealer has a few M8 and called if I wanted one. I explained to him the issues with the M8 and the discussions in this forum. I have decided to wait for Leica's announcement. Meanwhile, I am using my R8/DMR to satisfy my 'digital fix', or my M3/M6 to get my 'RF fix'.

Chris, I only talk to the dog in my sleep and doesn't mind what I do as long as I include him.;)

LCT, your advice is appreciated and understood. However, most of my life has been spent compromising and 'making do' and such like so the M8 'as is' should not disturb me too much. Still weihing up, but tomorrow morning will be the test of my fortitude. I will certainly grill the dealer about any protecting that may be due to me. My basic intention will be NOT to return it if I do buy. So far, it seems so far ahead of the RD-1 (with all its compromises) that I think I will be overjoyed, both emotionaly and practically.

Cheers,

Erl

Edit: LCT, wrt to 'full knowledge' of defects seems a bit hard to establish since Leica have not specifically declared what the problems are, nor do the dealers have any idea. Also, merchanable quality is to be expected by the purchaser, but as I said, I am not looking for a way out, but rather a way in!

Most of the dealers staff in Melbourne, and in Sydney, seem genuinely pretty impressed with the M8. Disappointed that some things are yet to be sorted, aware that it leaves them in a spot, and also justifiably irritated by some less than competant use of the beast being passed of as fault of the camera.

It is going to be a hard one to leave in the shop if you see it. But it isnt like it is the end of the line for the things. They can only get more user friendly shall we say?

I figure I can wait a bit. I figure I dont have to meet deadlines so...back to robust for me, and agfapan to get it right. Volume to practice proficiency..anyway, that's the plan

I think the essential point for your consideration is,

Assuming Leica will ship out the 2nd wave of M8s with the hardware board fixed for the tweading/banding from Nov 27 onwards. And at the same time, calling for the 1st wave M8s back to Solms for a 2-week hardware upgrade,

What is your position on the dealer's list for the 2nd wave M8s? If it is high as I assume, can you bear just from now to end of Nov... Only you can tell, if you can't bear, then get what the dealer can give you now. I'm sure Leica will take care of your 1st wave M8 and you will surely have a great enjoyment from now on. No need to worry whether can it come before X'mas IMHO = )

Cheers

Matthew

PS: Though I feel somehow some time a bit disappointed by the various issues, the enjoyment and satisfaction from my M8 shoting and pictures is far far more than the early dismay. Let alone Leica will certainly take good care of us, the pioneers.
