This looks interesting...

It has been discussed somewhere on the forum Louis, can't remember where at the moment, with some talk of the leaked shots being a (good) photoshop job.

Other reports expect a Panasonic announcement on 1 Sept, after the expected Canon Powershot announcements (G10 replacement rumour) on 19 August but of course before the rumoured Leica event on 9 September. This has sparked a wave of 'D-Lux 5' excitement, although I would have thought a Digilux 4 would be nearer the mark.

Who knows, just one more rumour at the moment.

Yes, I saw that. The silhouette certainly looks similar to the leaked shots but until the announcement it's not definitive, something seems to be coming though.

Actually I'd be quite pleased if it were something similar to the rumoured 'GF1' as I'm looking for a good compact at the moment. I don't like arms length framing or focusing though, which currently severely limits the available options.

Well, although it certainly will be a nice camera, it probably will not be the right thing for me. What I am waiting for is a camera with a built-in (electronic) viewfinder, and of at least slightly larger size, so that you really feel that you "have something in your hand". Well, and a larger size is necessary anyhow if one wants to have a larger sensor and a lens of similar quality like the lens of the Digilux 2.

So, everyone who followed my posts during the last years knows that I long for a successor of the Digilux 2...

If you look at the "leaked" photos showing the back of the camera, there appears to be a USB-like connection directly below the hot shoe. Some are speculating that this could be a connection for an optional, shoe-mounted EVF.

I'm definitely interested.

These auto-everything marvels do everything themselves, anyway. They don't even need a photographer..

Next season's cameras won't need an audience, either. They look at your pictures all by themselves with the corresponding ah's and oh's where appropriate or useful.

This is especially useful with the in-built projector compact from Nikon. C'mon Leica, get your skates on! :D

why not have a built in projector doing the light show and the camera instructing the subject with appropriate prompts like.......:)

Leica will counter with a standalone projector with built-in music generator, branded as the bala-Leica.

Not sure what the advantage is over the GH1 which at least has a viewfinder. But with the GH1 at about three and a half Aust grand for a three quarter format ... Not sure I'm that fussed. Pay a eight hundred bucks for a canon, nikon consumer SLR and it will probably out do you every time.

Several points:

1 - I'm not interested in LCD-only viewing. It's for babies.

2 - BUT, more detailed leaked shots of the back of the GF-1 (edit: as MPJMP already noted) seem to show a connector slot right below the hot shoe, that might be for connecting an EVF. Slide the EVF into the shoe, and contacts slide into the slot and feed the video signal to the EVF. Maybe.

3 - IF there are also accesory bright-line viewfinders (a al D-Lux4, EP-1, Ricoh), then you have a 3-way camera that can be a P&S, or an EVIL "SLR", or a viewfinder street camera (like the Bessa-L).

4 - EVEN BIGGER IF: Suppose Leica or Panasonic were to make a mini-Frakenfinder: Bright-line finder (view, not range) with variable lines for different focal lengths (set manually by dial). It picks up some exposure data via the EVF data slot (but not an EVF image). It fits in the accesory shoe and covers the whole right top of the camera (blocking the pop-up flash - but who cares?). Frame lines for 17/24/50mm ("35/48/100")

Instant Barnack camera - well, no: more like instant mish-mosh of Contax G (AF, not manual RF), Voigtlander (manual framelines), a touch of Canon P or L, and a little Kodak Retina thrown in (ability to use the same lenses in "reflex" or "viewfinder" modes).

Personally, I think a Leica version of the GH-1, with 1080 video, is more likely than a Leica version of the GF-1, which I see as more of a blocking move against the EP-1.

Yeah, I know Leica said no more 4/3rds - but Leica has said a lot of things.

there was an idea flying around for EP1, where you could plug an EVF into the video out socket and mount it on the hotshoe.

Indeed that wouldnt be complex or prohibitive, you can connect an ordinary TV to my E3 and in live view it gives the same view as the LCD, with all the shooting info etc. When liveview is turned off, it shows the menu screen.

Olympus cameras are demonstrated to groups like this all the time using large flat screen TV's.

Seems to me all you need is a 3/4" TV set and some glue :)

I like this idea. Not incorporating a built-in viewfinder actually allows for a lot of potential versatility and enables each user to decide for him/herself how they want to configure their camera to meet their individual needs. You could pair an optical bright-line finder with a wide-angle prime lens and use it for quick street photography. Or, switch to an EVF when using a zoom lens or for macro-photography. Or, remove the finder altogether and use it as a P&S with the built-in LCD for travel snapshots with the family. Lots of options with such a camera, provided of course that someone has the foresight to develop and manufacture such accessories.
